He opened the boot of the car and could only recognise Sky from her hair. “It’s over, Sky. I’m Damon Knightly.” He took his phone out of his pocket and handed it to Kat who was now beside him. “Kat, call triple zero.” He didn’t take his eyes off Sky. “We’ll stay with you. I’m hesitant to move you until the ambulance is here. Is that okay?”

“Yes. He cut me up pretty bad. He was going to do more later. He was taking me away to kill me, but then he stopped the car and told me he was getting another. Are they okay?”

“I’m okay.” Kat stepped forward where Sky could see her. “You were brave and selfless to warn me.”

“I was dead anyway. Why should another die?”

“You were brave and selfless,” Kat repeated. “The ambulance is on its way. Is there anyone we can call to help you? Your parents or someone?”

Sky tried to shake her head but everything hurt. “No. I need someone to feed my dogs. There’s a dog show tomorrow. I won’t make that. I need someone to feed them, though.”

Damon touched her hand. “Selfless. I’ll feed them for you, and we’ll get you the best medical attention.” Damon smiled at the sound of sirens. “Help is on the way.”

Two ambulances, a police car and an unmarked police car they both recognised arrived.

“Rambo and Kitty Kat. Love your handiwork,” Gareth said as he inspected the Hooker Killer on the ground.

Xavier walked up to the back of the car. “How is our vic…what’s your name, miss?”

  “Sky Channing.”

“I’m Detective Xavier Lawless. I’ll question you after the paramedics look after you.”

Damon walked away to make a phone call. “Hey, Tony. A girl’s been cut up pretty badly. I need your help to try to retain her beauty. Who was Avery’s plastic surgeon?”

“I’ll text you his number and cover the costs. Is there anything else I can do to help?”

Kat pulled up outside a small, weatherboard home on three acres. “I like dogs but don’t have much experience with them.”

Damon smiled. “Heather has Samoyeds. They’re great dogs.” He walked with Kat through the gate and saw a bigger gate behind the house with eight fluffy white dogs smiling at them. “The dog food’s in the shed.” He opened the shed’s door and saw the fridge where Sky said it would be. His phone interrupted him. Damon smiled at the caller ID. “Hello, Benjie.”

“Sky didn’t turn up to the dog show this morning. The news said another girl was attacked and the killer was caught. Please tell me it wasn’t Sky?”

“Sky’s alive. Kat and I are feeding her dogs right now. We’re at her place. She’s been cut up and even with plastic surgery will never look the same. She’s already quit her job.”

“Thank God she’s okay and that she’s quit her job. She’ll be so much safer. What can I do to help? I can help look after her dogs. Do you think she’ll want visitors?”

Kat watched as Damon’s face lit up. “She’ll definitely need a friend.”

Damon hung up and helped Kat put food in the bowls.

“I thought the doctor said Sky should look as beautiful as ever?”

  Damon grinned, “He did.”

Alpha walked into the Hooker Killer’s hospital room. “That didn’t go as planned.”

“What are you doing to my drip?”

“Making the pain go away.” Alpha inserted a clear liquid into the drip.

“Morphine or something? I thought you’d be angry.”

“Oh, I am. The girl’s stronger than I thought.”

“So why are you helping me?” He tried to scream out in pain but couldn’t as his heart felt like it ripped in two.

Alpha started walking out of the room, “I’m not.”
