This Life II Page 43

by Dee, Cara

I felt for them both. It’d been a while since I’d figured out Kellan had feelings for Shan, though he’d denied it. And then, last month, I walked in on them in Finnegan’s study at home in Villanova. They’d been kissing. I’d slammed the door shut and nearly freaked out.

Kellan had pleaded with me not to say anything to Finnegan. He needed time, he’d said. And to be honest, I didn’t know what he’d meant by that—not to this day. Unless something was going to change. Time indicated this wasn’t something they were going to deny until they died. So, maybe I was wrong. Maybe it wasn’t new…?

Either way, I’d acted on instinct and agreed, and I’d gone a step further to help them. I’d gotten the boss out of town by telling Finnegan I desperately needed a vacation. I’d piled on the list of white lies until he’d booked us tickets for the following day.

“I kinda want them to happen,” Luna admitted.

“Me too.” I’d thought it over so many times. Kellan was sweet and protective, and…Shannon was evidently into that.

  Perhaps my father-in-law was bi?

“More, Mommy,” Ryan complained when I stopped scratching his scalp. “Pwease?”

I chuckled and returned my fingers to his soft hair.

“Listen.” Luna held up a finger and cocked her head.

  I listened…

Then I let out a laugh. Finnegan was on the phone with the pub next door. Ordering food.

When he’d wrapped up the call, I couldn’t help myself.

“Honey?” I called in a singsong voice. “Finnegan!”

He poked his head out from the kitchen. “What,” he asked flatly.

  “How’s dinner coming along?”

He sucked his teeth and got heated, speaking with his hands. “They were shit steaks and shit potatoes. We did everything right. We followed the goddamn recipe.”

  I blew him a kiss.

He was just too cute. Life with a mobster was surprisingly easy when he came home at the end of the day, threw his tie over his shoulder and changed his son’s diaper, helped his daughter with homework, and burned steaks to a crisp and got bitchy about it.

Choosing this life with Finnegan O’Shea had given me everything.

  More from Cara

Finnegan and Emilia will return in This Life III – 10 years later

  But first…

Our Whistler and Princess will appear in:

  Kellan’s book & Liam’s book

Cara freely admits she’s addicted to revisiting the men and women who yammer in her head, and several of her characters cross over in other titles. If you enjoyed this book, you might like the following.

Auctioned (M/M) An angsty action series that revolves around young Gray Nolan who gets kidnapped and pushed into a world of trafficking—and the older, jaded, former military contractor Darius Quinn who sets out to save him. For This Life readers, there is a minor crossover, in which you’ll meet Kellan Ford when Gray finds himself in Philadelphia.

Path of Destruction (M/F) A gritty rock-star romance with a twist. Lincoln Hayes is one of the world’s most famous guitar players when he shares a summer of sex, drugs, and rock n roll with Adeline Ivey. A summer that ends in tragedy and incarceration. Ten years later, Lincoln steps out from prison, and his past is impossible to escape.

  About Cara

I’m often awkwardly silent or, if the topic interests me, a chronic rambler. In other words, I can discuss writing forever and ever. Fiction, in particular. The love story—while a huge draw and constantly present—is secondary for me, because there’s so much more to writing romance fiction than just making two (or more) people fall in love and have hot sex. There’s a world to build, characters to develop, interests to create, and a topic or two to research thoroughly. Every book is a challenge for me, an opportunity to learn something new, and a puzzle to piece together. I want my characters to come to life, and the only way I know to do that is to give them substance—passions, history, goals, quirks, and strong opinions—and to let them evolve. Additionally, I want my men and women to be relatable. That means allowing room for everyday problems and, for lack of a better word, flaws. My characters will never be perfect.

Wait…this was supposed to be about me, not my writing.

I'm a writey person who loves to write. Always wanderlusting, twitterpating, kinking, and geeking. There’s time for hockey and cupcakes, too. But mostly, I just love to write.
