BARR: a bay falls high novel
Page 21
And he thought he ran BFH.
“This is going to change everything,” Kip said.
“Barr, you just got here not too long ago,” Pres said. “I know shit’s been crazy. There’s a lot you don’t know about that happened when you were gone…”
“I’m here now,” I said. “I’m not going anywhere ever again. What happened up at BC is done and over. Don’t ask me about it. I’ll never talk about it. I’m here right now and I’m going to do this.”
“I’m in then too,” Kip said. He put his fist out. “All fucking in. I’m tired of this place. And I’m tired of HCH. When we’re done here, we go there.”
“Just let me think things out before we act fast,” Pres said. “Okay? Give me a chance to think it through.”
“Did you think this one through? With T-Jac?” I asked.
Pres put his fist to Kip’s. “That prick has got to go.”
I threw my fist forward and hit both Kip’s and Pres’s.
I nodded.
It was time to start the fight. The war.
It was time to take it all over.
The rules…
The Rulz were now here.
Epilogue
a little bit later now, love
“Let’s just make sure Pres doesn’t find out about this, love.”
Tinsley laughed and hit my arm. “You’re such an asshole, Barr. You want to have a secret affair with me now?”
“Why not?” I asked. “We’ve done it before, right?”
“Not even close,” she said. “You were always hung up on Mel. You never really wanted me.”
“Damn,” I said. “That’s cold.”
“It’s the truth. And what if Mel heard you talking to me like this?”
“She’d laugh,” I said. “She knows everything, love.”
“You should get that piano fixed,” Tinsley said. “So you don’t sound so crappy.”
“Has Pres been sneaking you drinks?” I asked. “You’re all feisty.”
“I think it’s Alex,” Tinsley said. “I don’t like her.”
I laughed. “You never did. I don’t get it. She’s friendly.”
“She’s bouncy,” Tinsley said. “Bitch.”
“You don’t like her talking to Pres, huh?”
“I don’t like her talking to anyone I know.”
I touched Tinsley’s shoulders. “You’re so damn beautiful, love. I’m happy for you. And for Pres. And I guess I’m happy for Kip and Ruby too. Although I feel bad for Ruby.”
“Don’t we all,” Tinsley said.
“I’m glad you all came here.”
“I can’t believe you invited everyone. This is your secret place, Barr.”
“Well, I owe it to you all. You’re like family to me. Or something.”
“How sweet,” Tinsley said. “Good luck tonight.”
“I don’t need it,” I said.
“Ohgod, here comes the cocky Barr,” Tinsley said.
She backed away.
Ruby and Mel appeared from the side door and Tinsley hurried to Ruby and grabbed her hand.
Ruby shook Tinsley away and came toward me. “Hey, Barr.”
“Hey, Ruby,” I said.
“Good luck.”
“I don’t need it,” I said again.
“He’s such a jerk,” Tinsley said.
Ruby opened her mouth but stopped.
I grinned and nodded.
There were little fleeting moments when Ruby insisted on talking about me saving her. I told her a hundred times we didn’t need to talk about it. It was done and over with. As long as she was happy, I was happy for her.
Tinsley and Ruby left the crammed backstage area of the underground club.
“Were you flirting with Tinsley?” Mel asked.
“Of course I was,” I said. “Why?”
“You’re lucky I’m used to all of this.”
“Oh yeah? What would you do if you weren’t?”
“You don’t want to know,” Mel said.
She got closer to me and we hugged.
She took a deep breath.
“Nervous?” I asked.
“A little.”
“You played here before,” I said.
“Without warning though,” she said. “You’ve had this night built up for weeks.”
I looked down at her. “Hey. It’s time. Music is our thing. And it’s for fun.”
“I know. I just want everything… ugh, Barr… you make me want everything to be perfect. I hate you for that.”
“Everything is perfect, love,” I said.
“Are you ready?” a voice asked from out on the small stage.
Mel sucked in a breath as everyone began to cheer.
If I was going to give myself to Mel, I wanted to give pieces of myself to everyone else too. I wanted Mel to come here and play piano with me. And play with Benny and Bobby. I wanted her to find that passion again and do something with it. But only if she wanted to.
Until she figured it all out for sure, we would walk the beach without socks and shoes, hold hands, talk, and laugh. I’d smoke cigarettes and she’d put her head to my arm. We’d party at Kip’s guesthouse. She’d drink a little too much vodka and get extra flirty and cute. We’d either crash there or back at my house. She loved the loft too. She took the keyboard up there and played all the time. I loved listening to it too. She had a secret notebook with music and words in it. I found it and didn’t say a word. Someday she’d show it to me. Everything I had set up for my future revolved around her.
My Mel.
My Melody.
My Ody.
“Time to do this, love,” I whispered to her.
I kissed her once, broke away from her, and lit a cigarette.
We held hands as we walked to the curtain.
I stopped and pulled it back and nodded so she could go first.
And then I stood there.
I watched her walk to the stage with everyone clapping.
Pres and Kip with thundering claps. Kip whistling like an asshole.
Tinsley and Ruby calling Mel’s name.
There wasn’t many people there. That was the point. It was a secret underground club. My secret place. And now I had shared it with those who meant the most to me. My love for Tinsley. My care for Ruby. My brotherhood with Pres and Kip.
I took a drag of my cigarette and Mel looked back at me and smiled.
I smiled back and nodded.
Don’t worry, love, I’ll always be right by your side.
