Halloween
“You screwed me, Rory Blackmore!”
Rory grinned, her platinum blonde hair matched her pale skin giving her a monochromatic, robotic look.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, Dave,” Rory replied in a sing-song voice.
Dave reddened before her, his face twisting and contorting in rage she couldn’t pretend to hate. A smile twitched at Rory’s lips.
“You think this is bloody funny then?”
“Aye,” Rory replies, “I think it’s rather funny. You underestimated me, you thought I couldn’t hang with the big guys because I’m a woman.”
“You’re twisted,” Dave spat, “You’re a demented lying bitch!”
“Call me all the names you want. I won,” Rory sneered.
It was Dave’s turn to smile.
“You think you’ve won. That’s rich.”
Rory shrugged. Dave leaned over her desk, his eyes ablaze with anger.
“You haven’t won anything, Miss Blackmore. We were supposed to be friends, but you can’t trust anyone, can you? You’re just another cold investor without a soul. Let me warn you, Rory, you’ve messed with the wrong man.”
“Don’t be such a sore loser, Dave.”
“Loser,” he scoffed, “We’ll see who the loser is at the end of this.”
Rory snickered as Dave stormed out of her office. Rory closed her Manila folder with a self-satisfied grin. With the accounts she had just poached from her so-called friend, she would get herself a whopping Christmas bonus and finally upgrade her Mercedes C-Class. Rory wriggled excitedly in her seat and picked up the phone.
“Candice? You there?”
“Hi, Rory. What is it? I’m a bit preoccupied with Benjamin at the moment.”
“Forget bloody Benjamin.”
“Are you asking me to forget… my son?”
Rory rolled her eyes.
“Wha-ever.”
“What is it, Rory.”
“Let’s go out Halloween.”
“Can’t.”
“Let me guess, Benjamin.”
“Rory! He’s only two.”
“Dress him up like a marshmallow and let’s go clubbing!”
“Rory…”
“Fine. I’ll see if my mum can babysit.”
“The last time your mum babysat she gave him whiskey.”
“Okay. Get him whatever sitter you can and I’ll pay.”
“You mean that?”
“Trust me, Candice, I’ve got big things in the making. Money is not a problem.”
Candice sighed. There would be no shaking Rory unless she agreed to go out with her.
“I’ll come. What are we going to dress as.”
“Sluts.”
“Rory!”
“We were sluts when we did Halloween in Amsterdam.”
“First of all, I hated that, and back then I wasn’t a mum.”
“Fine. We can be witches.”
“...Not sexy witches.”
“Are you trying to get laid?”
“No! I’m not,” Candice protested.
“Why not? Aloysius left you, babe. I think it’s time you move on.”
“I’m getting too old to meet some handsy twenty-five year old in the back of a nightclub.”
“Should have thought of that before letting Alo shag you.”
“Did you call me just to rag on me?”
“Sorry, you’re right. Do you think Katie will come out and we can be sexy three blind mice?”
“We are getting too old to be sexy anything.”
“Speak for yourself. Shit, I’ve got to go. We’ll be Disney princesses.”
“But Rory…”
“Gotta go, the boss is coming.”
Rory slammed the phone down.
“Hi Saj, how are you?”
“Rory. How are you handling things today?”
“Almost done actually.”
“Good. Carry on then. Your jumper looks nice.”
Saj left her office and Rory sighed leaning back in her chair. She didn’t really “do” guys like Saj usually but she hadn’t gotten laid in so long she was considering it. Saj was into her, Rory sensed. He always lingered at her desk far too long and she caught him staring at her tits once. Maybe she’d invite him to Halloween too. He could be nice and hot with a few drinks in him.
After work, Rory brushed past Dave, hoping to avoid him on the lift. Dave saw her leaving and chased her down, get
ting on the same lift. Rory hugged her Chanel handbag and tapped her heels impatiently. Dave just couldn’t let it go…
He pressed the lift doors shut and turned to Rory with a smirk on his face.
“You smug little priss, I’ve got news for you.”
“I don’t care.”
“Oh? Remember when you hooked up with Sid from accounting?”
“What are you talking about.”
“God, you’re so transparent, Rory.”
“So what? You’re going to spread an unsubstantiated rumor that I slept with Sid? I don’t care.”
“He’s married you slag.”
Rory gasped.
“I’m not a slag, you take that back!”
“Oh yes you are, and Sid has the video to prove it.”
Rory went pale.
“Stop it, Dave. This isn’t funny.”
“I’m not being funny, babes. I scheduled an email out to Saj at 7:30 am tomorrow, so you’d better start looking for a new job. When he sees your tiny tits bouncing on camera, he’ll fire you on the spot.”
“You can’t do this! This is illegal, Dave!”
“How are you going to prove it’s me? My Masters is in cybersecurity. There will never be any proof. So thanks for stabbing me in the back.”
The lift doors parted and Rory stormed off fighting back tears. That whole mess with Sid has been a total mistake. They’d been working with Hong Kong for weeks together and with all those late nights and the way he told her how beautiful she was. It has just happened one night. He pushed her up against the wall and he said she was far more beautiful than his wife. She pushed him away, but then he told her she was the smartest one in the office and she deserved to have all Dave’s accounts. He told her if she slept with him, he’d help her reach her full potential.
So she’d done it. She’d closed her eyes and… Rory let out a choked sob. He’d played her.
Rory wandered out into the busy London streets, fighting back tears. She couldn’t let Dave win. No way. Even if she got fired, she had plenty stashed away and she could always get a job at a competing firm, even if last year she told Peter Mulgrew she’d rather make love to a splintered cricket bat than work for him, surely a low cut shirt and flashing her baby blues would change his mind?
A small boutique a few blocks away from her office had a remarkable Halloween collection come in, in preparation for the slew of costume parties that would storm the city the next night. Rory stopped by earlier that week and eyed some of the costumes. She was in such a sour mood that she didn’t care how much her costume cost as long as it was the best.
I’ll be eating beans and toast before long. I might as well enjoy this while it lasts, Rory thought to herself.
Rory searched for the perfect princess costume. She turned her nose up at all of them. What did any of these princesses know? They thought life was all about happily ever afters and trusted implicitly that a handsome prince would solve all their problems.
“Need help with anything, lass?” The Northern sounding shopkeeper asked.
“Just looking.”
“You’d make a great Cinderella.”
“No… I’m thinking of something a bit darker.”
“Ah, I understand. I’ve got something special in the back that we haven’t brought out yet. Would you like to see it?”
“Why not.”
The shopkeeper hastened our back and returned with a tight leather bodysuit, thigh-high boots and a headpiece with giant black horns.
“Maleficent,” Rory breathed in awe.
“Aye, it’s fantastic, isn’t it? And pardon me for saying but you’ve got the right figure for it.”
“Mind if I try it on.”
“Go ahead, lass,” he replied, beaming from ear to ear.
Rory took the costume into the black dressing room and peeled the fabric onto her petite frame. She gasped with delight as she saw it. This was the type of costume that would make any red-blooded man cum in his pants to see her. She squealed with delight.
“I’ll take it!”
The shopkeeper parceled up the 500£ costume into a nice box with a red ribbon. Only the best for such a special night — her last night of guaranteed easy living before Dave got Saj to throw her out on her arse. Rory went home that night with some Nandos to contemplate her fate alone. Rory tossed and turned all night, stewing with dread over what would happen in the morning.
Whether she liked it or not, the morning eventually came. Rory brushed her platinum blonde hair and popped mascara onto her lashes. Rory slipped in a tight navy dress with heels. They both made her eyes pop. If she was going to face Saj like this, let it happen with dignity. Rory drove to work, pulling into her parking spot for what she was sure was the last time.
Rory breathed slowly for a minute, pulling herself together for what she was sure would be a hellish day.
“Stay cool,” she whispered to herself, “Stay cool, you’ve handled worse.”
Rory’s heels clicked throughout the parking lot and she entered through the front of the building, swiping her access card and greeting Ron, the security guard. Rory made it to her office without incident. Rose at the front desk said that Saj wasn’t in yet, so Rory figured she had at least twenty minutes. The view from her office was perfect — you could see the Eye and the entire skyline. Even on a typical overcast London day, Rory loved that view. She would miss that view.
When Saj came in, he didn’t bother heading to his office first. He came straight to Rory’s, a scowl set upon his dark features and his thick dark hair tousled like he hadn’t had a wink of sleep.
“We need to talk.”
Rory smiled. In this male-dominated field, Rory learned to keep her emotions in check lest she shows weakness. With Saj, especially given what she knew, Rory had to be smooth and polished.
“Perfectly ready to talk, Saj. What’s this about?”
“Dave showed me something disturbing.”
“He still writes poetry then?” Rory replied with a cocksure grin.
“Rory, this is serious. You engaged in relations with a married coworker and...filmed it. What were you thinking?”
“What do you want me to say, Saj? You want me to apologize for having a healthy vibrant sex life? Sure you’re not a bit jealous.”
“Rory, he’s married,” Saj pleaded as if the morality of it had never crossed her mind.
“Is Sidney aware of that?”
“Sidney isn’t the one in the video,” Saj replied sternly.
“What will it take for this to go away, Saj?” Rory rose to her feet and leaned over, meeting his harsh judgmental gaze with a defiant strength that was purely put on. Saj didn’t flinch at her threatening stance.
“Have you given me a choice?”
“Saj, Dave only showed you that video out of malice.”
“Exactly. And who else might he show it to? What are we going to tell clients if any one of them sees you in such a compromising position.”
“If you’re going to fire me, man up and do it.”
“Fine. You’re fired.”
“Bastard,” Rory hissed.
“I’m sorry to let you go, love. Believe me, I wish it could be different.”
“I’ll pack my things,” Rory replied coldly.
Saj grinned awkwardly and ran his hands through his hair.
“Are you still going to the costume party tonight?”
Rory turned up her nose in disgust.
“Why do you ask?”
“Just because of what happened here, doesn’t mean we can’t be friends anymore.”
Rory snorted.
Saj continued, “I’m just saying… you’re the fittest girl in the office. And that video? Wow. Your tits looked great.”
“Thanks.”
“Oh, don’t be offended, love. You’ll get back on your feet in no time.”
“I don’t have time for this. I need to pack.”
Saj backed out of the room and Rory packed her box before
doing the walk-of-shame out of the office building. She could hear Dave whispering to Jenna and Emily, but she couldn’t make out what they said except for one word, “slag”.
Rory waited until she got to her car before bursting into tears. What happened was worse than she could have expected. The way Saj looked at her as if she was cheap, and the gall he had to make a pass at her after firing her!
Rory drove home and slept until it was time to get ready for the Halloween party. When Candice buzzed herself in, Rory realized she’d forgotten to tell her friend about her change in costume from pretty princess to a terrifying villain. That would be hell to get out of considering how reluctant Candice had been to come out in the first place. Plus, Rory didn’t want Candice to know she’d been fired. This was Halloween, a time for them to have fun and catch up with each other, not worrying about the future.
Rory met Candice at the door.
“I have a confession…”
“What did you do?”
“I didn’t get a princess costume.”
“Bitch!”
“Sorry! The shop keeper had this gorgeous costume. I just had to wear it.”
“Put it on then. If it doesn’t look drop-dead sexy I’m going to kill you myself.”
Rory grabbed the box and ran into her bathroom to get dressed. The costume fit just as well and for the first time since her humiliating encounter with Saj, Rory felt good about herself. She’d made a mistake, yes, but at least she was in control of something. Rory placed the giant horn headpiece on her head and stalked out of the bathroom.
