Next Mission
Lee Hunter was sitting just behind a row of large bushes, in the dark, next to a normally busy highway, which at the moment was empty. The great thing about living in an area that isn’t heavily populated is that the roads are perfectly clear. They had been sitting on this highway for several hours and he knew that if the trucks didn’t come soon they would have to call the whole mission off. Lee was twenty eight, had dark blond hair that was cut short on the sides and long on the top. He had a beard, which at the moment he was happy about, considering it kept his face a little warmer. His hands were shaking from the cold. He wore all black clothes, with a cold rifle pressed against his chest. Lee for a second had forgotten there were people next to him. He had tunnel vision and he knew it. This would be the fifth truck owned by the United States Army, they have robbed. The trucks were protected by the United States Security Bureau and carried all different sort of supplies. Most of the time it was supplies like clothing or food; once or twice they were lucky enough to get weapons. This time he knew there were two trucks that had guns. This was big for his organization.
In the months after President Marshal took complete control of the United States government, Lee and his father Danny had been busy. They had gathered around one hundred people to stand against the Government. Lee, like the others had heard about the Democratic Insurgence but Danny, Lee’s father had his doubts about their ability to take over. Danny was a Vietnam veteran and said they had fought an enemy they couldn’t see. The U.S had pulled out of that war, so this was going to be Danny’s approach. Lee’s group had led little guerrilla attacks, then they started taking down trucks in order to gain supplies for the eventual war.
“I got eyes on the convoy now,” A soft voice said over the radio.
This brought Lee back to the present. He felt adrenaline start to pump in his body. Lee went on the radio.
“How long do we have, John?” Lee asked into the radio.
“We got eight minutes, sir,” John said.
John Wooten was an Indiana State Trooper. He and Danny had both served in the armed forces together and John was the first person Danny recruited. John was up the road by a mile, or so, acting like he is doing a traffic stop. John could spot the truck and Lee and the others would ambush it.
“Terri,” Lee said to a woman a few years younger than him. “Get ready we don’t have much time.” Terri Davis was very pretty. Her hair was short and she wore all black. Even in the pitch black night, wearing all black clothes, Lee thought she was beautiful. “Let’s do this,” Terri said. She went back behind a tree and grabbed a rocket launcher.
Lee looked and he could see lights coming from the road. The clock was ticking as the convoy drew closer. Terri took aim, she was waiting for Lee’s signal. If she missed then they were in a lot of trouble. The lights got brighter, and brighter until Lee gave the signal. Terri fired the rocket, it hit the first Humvee and exploded. The truck behind the burning Humvee slammed on its breaks but it was too late. The truck hit the flaming remains of the vehicle. The truck behind that, slid to the side and hit the one in front of it. The Humvee behind the trucks stopped and several USSB agents got out and started to set a perimeter. Some of the agents fired in their direction.
Lee led the troops towards the agents. Lee’s rifle felt light in his hands and there was something familiar about it when it fired. Lee made short work out of two agents who were on his side of the car. There were three agents on the opposite side of the trucks who fired at them. Lee directed several of his men to make their way to the truck and start unloading it. Lee shot another agent, this time it was direct to the head. Another agent stood to help his fallen comrade. Lee fired several times and hit an agent in the chest. Several of Lee’s soldiers flanked the Humvee. Lee heard firing before one of his men gave the signal that the area was clear. Lee made his way to the trucks to inspect their catch.
“Get this area secure. They must have sent a distress call by now,” Lee ordered. He went on his radio. “John get moving. We have the trucks.”
“Understood, sir,” John responded.
In the distance, Lee saw red and blue lights turn off. He knew John was taking off in the other direction. Lee went to the nearest truck and opened the back door. Inside he found wooden crates. He climbed into the truck and opened one of the crates, inside were rifles. Lee smiled when he saw the weapons. “Let’s get the trucks moving,” Lee ordered. One of Lee’s men got into the driver seat and Lee could feel the truck starting. Lee closed the back door of the truck. The men held on as they traveled.
The truck bounced a lot and which meant they were on the road that lead towards their hideout, which was a barn on Lee’s family’s farm. The truck slowed before entering the farm grounds and it drove for several minutes before it slowed, coming to a stop. The back door opened and Lee was greeted by the familiar faces of the people who have come to help their rebellion. Lee hopped off the back of the truck and shook his team’s hands as people in the barn unloaded the trucks. He was pleased they had another successful mission. The plan was now to unload the truck and organize the weapons. Lee looked at his watch and it was around six in th
e morning. The sun would be up soon which meant that they would have to leave the trucks in the barn until nightfall. The trucks would most likely be dumped somewhere and then torched for good measure. The less the government could use against them the better off they are. The trucks were unloaded and organized in an hour. Lee caught Terri’s eye and moved coolly towards her.
“You did well today,” Lee said to Terri.
“Thanks. You didn’t do half bad yourself,” she said.
Terri gave him a little punch on the shoulder. He lived for the little moments when they had contact with each other. Lee attempted to small talk for a bit but he didn’t seem to know what to say to her. After several minutes of silence, Lee excused himself to report to his dad. He kicked himself for not saying more to Terri. Lee had known Terri most of his life and yet he still had trouble talking to her. He was helping to lead a rebellion against the United States Government and yet, he couldn’t form a few sentences together.
Lee was in charge of the operations of their militia. Terri was his second in command. Their numbers were small but they were starting to hit larger targets. For some reason beyond Lee’s comprehension, the USSB had a large presence in the Quad Cities. They called it the Quad Cities because they were made up of four cities that were in such close proximity to each other, they were almost one large city. Large city, in this case, is a loose word. The cities together equal around seventy thousand people. If you weren’t from the area you would have almost no clue that the Quad Cities were actually four smaller ones. The city flowed and felt almost like any metropolitan city. For this reason, Lee and his father still couldn’t find out why the USSB were so interested in it.
Lee walked outside and his eyes took a moment too adjust from the light. Lee had spent all of the last several hours sitting in the dark and he felt for a fleeting second, he would go blind from the sunlight. After his eyes adjusted he quickened his pace towards the farmhouse. The farmhouse was old but Lee’s family had done a good job at keeping up the house. The farmhouse was ten miles from the Quad Cities. It was an area that was surrounded by cornfields and dense groups of trees. Lee walked up the steps of the porch, he heard the familiar creeks under his feet and he felt like he was home.
He walked through the door and his father was watching television. His father looked much older than he was. He had gray hair and his face was heavily wrinkled. Danny also had lost both of his legs during the war. Though he had prosthetic legs he refused to wear them. Danny claimed that it bothered him because of this, he moved around, using a wheelchair.
“How did it go, Lee?” Danny asked.
“It went well father,” Lee responded. “We got two trucks and they were filled with weapons. AR-27’s and M-50 rocket launchers, ammunition, and some other weapons.”
“It was a big payoff,” Danny started. “We will need larger ones if we are to win against the government. Eventually, they will take notice of what we are doing and we will have to fight.”
“We will be ready.”
“This is a message from the emergency broadcast system,” The robotic voice over the television said interrupting their conversation. Both Danny and Lee stopped talking to watch what was going on. Lee knew this was odd to come over their television.
“This is former Senator Samuel H. Powell,” a human voice said.
Lee knew who Senator Powell was. During the take over many Senators were rounded up and executed for having plotted against the US Government. Lee remembered watching as the USSB executed them after the President was done speaking. Lee was surprised that the Senator lasted this long being one of the most wanted men, by the government. He listened closely to the Senators speech. He was surprised at what the Senator was saying. The Senator claimed to have attacked a military facility and claimed to be part of the Democratic Insurgence. Every word the Senator spoke was a shock to Lee. Various news agencies had said he was a part of the Insurgency but Lee never believed it. He figured the group wasn’t even real, that they were made up by the government so they could make the people scared. Lee had a hunch that it was used as a way to have a tighter hold on the people. Now it seemed this was real. Senator Powell at the end claimed to be the President of the Democratic Insurgence. The last surprise was at the end when Senator Powell declared war against the government and declaring President Marshals end of power.
Chapter 1
Aftermath
Deep in the Rocky Mountains, stood a large building that was nearly hidden by trees. The building in its prime was a hotel, now it was the base of the Democratic Insurgence. In a hanger beneath the hotel, soldiers of the Democratic Insurgence were gathered to mourn their fallen soldiers. Everyone in the large room stood at attention as General Wilkins spoke.
“This morning we remember those we have lost,” General Wilkins said in a somber voice. “Their sacrifice will not be forgotten. We have begun to enter the most important time of our lives and that of this once great country. At this very moment we are declaring war. The ones we lost will be remembered for what they stood for. Together we will change this country and make it everything it should have been before.” He paused for a moment and looked around the room. His gazed drifted towards the banner on the wall, the names of the soldiers who died were written upon it.
Sarah a twenty year old soldier with sandy blonde hair followed the General’s gaze. She had seen the name written above her and now the name seemed to stand out. “Neil Hunter’ her father’s name. Seeing the name felt like needles through her heart. She had failed to save him from the prison. A thought that was on repeat in her head. When she spotted the name all she could picture was his lifeless body on the floor of the prison. His eyes still open. They were unable to bring him back along with the other prisoners who were trapped in the burning Prison, burning so that the United States Security Bureau could hide what they had done there.
General Wilkins seemed to come back to himself and looked back at the men and women standing at attention. “You all are dismissed,” he said quickly before he rushed off stage.
Sarah Hunter relaxed her stance and looked at her twin brother Nolan, his blond hair still a little dirty from the battle the night before. Sarah felt uncomfortable in a uniform. Nolan stood next to Karli Bell who was a year younger, her ankle was wrapped and she was having trouble walking. Nolan did his best to help her but his shoulder was also wrapped from a wound he had suffered during the battle. The battle for The Fortress had taken a toll on them. Sarah looked around and recognized people who had fought in the battle, most had signs of injury. The three of them walked out of the hanger.
Nolan needed to change his bandage on his shoulder and Karli had to get her leg looked at so the three of them walked towards the medical bay that was located one floor above them. It was a large room that had spent most of its existence relatively empty, except for the few medics and doctors. Since the battle from last night, the room had filled up almost to capacity by Sarah’s guess. It took them a moment to be seen by one of the doctors. Doctor Edwards ended up being the one who they would see. He was a middle-aged man with dark brown hair. Sarah thought that he was built like a swimmer with broad shoulders and long muscular arms. Doctor Edwards looked at Nolan’s shoulder and cleaned it, he seemed surprising gentile with Nolan. After changing his bandage the doctor took a look at Karli’s foot.
“Do your best to stay off it as much as you can,” Doctor Edwards said. “You won’t be allowed to go on any missions while your foot is still injured.”
“That is fine, I work in communications anyway,” Karli replied.
“That might not matter soon. With what happened many things will change around here,” Doctor Edwards said.
Steven Nelson walked into the medical bay. Steven was a year older than Sarah and was a Sergeant in there squad. He was tall with a soft face and short brown hair. Steven looked around before finding them. Sarah felt like her heart skipped a beat when she saw him. She waved him over and Steven hurried to them. “Captain Unde
rwood wants to see us,” Steven said.
Nolan said goodbye to Karli, gave her a tight hug. Sarah, Nolan, and Steven then headed for the D.I intelligence office. The office was located in a small hallway. When they arrived they had to enter through a small office. Kelly Lynn was the secretary who opened the door located behind a bookshelf. She pressed a button and the wall behind her opened leading to the main office. Sarah had only been in the room a few times. Before it was quiet with most agents out gathering intelligence now it seemed to be completely different. The room was loud, people talked over desks and handing off memos to each other. Screens on the walls show different news outlets talking about President Powell’s speech.
“Who voted him President?” Nolan asked.
“The council members thought it better to have a president as a leader,” Steven explained as he led them to where their offices were. “The council is still in control but they needed a face. He is to remain, President, until we establish a government.”
“Then what?” Sarah asked.
“Have another vote,” Steven shrugged. “They need to form a new government out of what was left of the old one.”
“The old one had flaws,” The voice of Director Moore said . “Flaws that crippled us. Next time we won’t let that happen.”
The three of them stood at attention as Director Moore came up to them. He looked tired. Sarah assumed that he must have been up while the battle took place and after. She was surprised he was still in charge, after letting them disobey orders.
“I am glad you all made it back,” Director Moore started. “Have you spoken to Will yet?”
