Carol decided she’d tell Harry what she could later. There was no fairy dust to spare on nosy warlocks who wanted to know every little detail. She’d give him an abridged version and ask him to never speak of it again. Harry had been good about keeping her confidences so far.
Like Fabio said last night, she was going to have to learn to trust more people. Harry was a safe bet if anyone was.
Her lead warlock had taken her redecorating with chairs as a hint about their workspace. Now the inside of the yurt looked like seating at a nightclub. She was reclined on a red velvet chair with her legs turned to the side. It made her feel very cozy and feminine. She liked that feeling.
Barry Manilow played softly in the background. He wasn’t her favorite, but Harry looked satisfied and content.
“Are we done with business, Great One?” Harry asked.
Carol nodded. “Yes. I…” She stopped and chose her words carefully. “I’m spending the afternoon with a friend. We might have dinner together as well—if I don’t kill him or freeze him back.”
Harry grinned and bowed his head before replying. “You deserve to spend time with someone who genuinely cares for you.”
“Thank you,” Carol said. She turned to her warlocks. “Thanks for everything you all did yesterday. Despite getting frozen, you all did your best. We’re going to work on being better prepared for evil witches and all the other rogue magicals we might encounter. Hang in there with me. By the time we get our magical shit straight, we’re all going to rock this world with our awesomeness.”
The sudden burst of loud clapping startled her, which had her laughing at their enthusiasm. Apparently, her man tools got excited easily. None would ever surpass the excitement of the one from last night, but that’s how life was. Good things and bad things all mixed together. You had to live in the moment and work with what life sent you.
“Before you leave us, we got you a gift to celebrate our first successful mission together.”
Carol watched as Harry rolled his bowler off and down his fingers with a sorcerer’s flourish. With the other hand, he made a beautifully wrapped package appear in her lap.
Carol laughed as she looked at it. “Gee, you guys got me a present? I don’t know what to say.”
She looked out and saw all her man tools studying her with deep interest. What reaction were they expecting from her? She hoped they weren’t disappointed.
Unwrapping the ribbons and paper slowly, Carol finally freed the lid on the box. She lifted it off and squealed in absolute delight. “Goddess—this is incredible! You guys are the best posse ever!”
The warlocks laughed and immediately started clapping again.
She held the silver coned Madonna bra up to her chest and smiled wide. Maybe her life as the Baba Yaga wasn’t going to suck so bad after all.
