Thorne grunted. That didn’t sound like the Cabot he knew. More likely, he realized the danger in coming after the person who made him out as a hero in the first place. There were still too many unanswered questions about what happened and it wasn’t in Cabot’s interest for the truth to come out any more than it was for him. If that wasn’t enough to keep him in check, there was always that felony assault frame up. Unless he played his part, jail time a real possibility for the lieutenant.
“There’s something you’re not telling me, Mancuso. Why come down here to tell me things I already know?”
“Isn’t it obvious? We like you.”
“And that means what?”
A thin smile cut across Mancuso’s face.
“You have a lot of potential, Thorne. You are highly trained and physically capable. We figure that in return for looking the other way on a couple of things, you could help us out on a case the Bureau is working in L.A. Perhaps have some kind of ongoing relationship after that. Your conflict resolution skills need a little work, but you appear to be a natural. We're bringing you into the fold.”
“I don't think so.”
Mancuso’s smile twisted, and his voice right along with it.
“We’re not giving you a choice. Don’t you see? We own you.”
Thorne nodded.
“People have been telling me that a lot lately.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Thorne smiled, then turned and walked away. He was through with the hero business. It didn’t pay worth a damn. Behind him, Mancuso called out one last time.
“We’ll be in touch, Thorne. Count on it.”
He kept walking.
