  Bang, bang.

I’m screaming on the inside. Who is this banging on my door?

“Get the hell out of my house.”

He hits the door again so hard it nearly comes off the hinges. My eyes dart around the room as I search for a hiding place. The scent of cheap cologne and alcohol seeps through the door. The familiar scent of pain, and history that I want to flee.

  Ginger’s meows turn into hissing.

“I need to talk to you,” the deep baritone voice explains.

The voice is familiar, but with less intensity. It’s Carl’s ass. He better get away from this door before the police get here. Carl is twelve years my senior and thinks a wife is property that can be treated any way he wants. I escaped his prison. And I’m not going back.

  Bam! Bam!

He keeps kicking and knocking at the door.

“Go away, Carl, I don’t want to talk to you.” I keep my eye on the door because as soon as he kicks this door in this bat is going upside his head. He has put the last bruise upon my body.

The hollering sound of the police siren rings out. I heave a deep exhale and my heart rate lowers as I lower the bat to the floor.

“The police? You called the fucking police?” He kicks the door again.

Moments later, the front door creaks open.

“I’m just here trying to talk with my wife,” Carl says.

I sprint to the bedroom door and swing it open to find Carl talking with two officers. Ginger scurries under the bed. She doesn’t like loud noises or unfamiliar people.

Carl’s blue eyes widened at the sight of me. I have a bat in my hand. I will swing if I need to. He is six feet and six inches of hell.

“We got reports of breaking and entering,” the tall male officer states. He grabs a pen from his pocket and then scribbles on a notepad.

“Officer, I have a restraining order against this nut. Please arrest him.”

Carl cuts his eyes in my direction and I stare back. I’m tired of running and hiding. Since being away from Carl for three weeks, I have sharpened my skills. I live alone and took a self-defense class online. All the training went out the window. When I feared for my life, I went straight for a bat.

Darkness flashes across his face. He drags his boots across the floor, walking in my direction.

I take two steps back and lift the bat to my shoulder. I stomp my feet. “Try it, mother fucker. You will wake up in critical care.”

“Stop, sir. Step back.” The male officer holds his hands up in front of Carl.

Carl stops in his tracks and then takes three guilty steps back.

“Ma’am, what’s your name?” the male officer questions.

“Kaitlyn Watson.” At this point, I’m furious. What’s with all the questions? Just slap the cuffs on this asshole.

“Can you put the bat down?” the female officer says.

I glance at her green eyes. My tensed muscles relax, my breathing decreases, and I place the bat up against the bedroom door.

“He broke into my house.” My eyes fill with tears.

“Where is the restraining order, ma’am? That’s all I need and I’ll haul his ass in.”

I rifle through the box in my closet. It isn’t there. I slide my hand under the bed and get a palm full of fur. Ginger’s big brown eyes stare back at me. I slide the shoe box from under the bed. I race back to the living room with the restraining order in hand.

The male officer views the papers. His once-pale skin is now flushed with red.

Glaring at Carl, he asks, “What’s your name?”

  “Carl.”

  “Carl what?”

  “Watson.”

He grabs the silver bracelets and slaps them on Carl’s wrist. My heart drops to the pit of my stomach. I thought I would never enjoy the rattle of the cuffs around Carl’s wrist.

The male cop Mirandizes Carl and escorts him down the hall stairs. The lady cop gives me her card.

“I don’t know how long they will keep this asshole, but if he ever bothers you again, you call me right away.”
