A Farm Girl's Despair (#5, the Winds of Misery Victorian Romance) (A Family Saga Novel) Page 23

by Dorothy Green

Lillian knew that she was educated, especially in the matters of geography and of books, but she was not educated in the common sense of how the world worked. It was because she had been tucked away in the convent and had not experienced anything of the world.

She saw how valuable that knowledge was now that she was at the estate. One day, she hoped to prove Alice wrong and be a wise woman with some sort of street smarts. Perhaps she would even learn to play cards and be an intelligent and cunning woman. But for now, she would have to endure being treated like a child.

‘Now, you are about to see very lavish dinner cooked for these guests, with all kinds of treats. I hope you are ready, because this is going to take several hours’, Alice said.

  ‘I am indeed’.

And Alice was not wrong, for the dinner platters that left the kitchen had more food than Lillian had ever seen. There were several roasted game hens, some that she had helped pluck herself the day before and then set in brine overnight.

Roasted root vegetables, including the potatoes that she helped prepare, were piled into large bowls before leaving the kitchen. There were blood puddings, ham, and herb salads. Pies and cakes where served for dessert, and Lillian did manage to taste several of the dishes by sneaking in a quick morsel here in there. It was the best food she had ever tasted in her entire life.

After the servants themselves ate their own meal and then cleaned the kitchen, it was time to wash up, go to bed, and do it all over again for the morning meal. But the next day would hold a change that Lillian was not expecting.
