with a bitter frown. Then I opened them again. “Micah,”

He turned around, mildly curious, but never hopeful. “Yes?”

“I want you to stay. You’re my child, and I won’t walk out on you.”

He thought I was joking, and he looked at me with incredulous eyes. But when my expression stayed serious, he walked up to me slowly and gave me a wobbly smile. “Do you still hate me?”

I shook my head. “You were, and still are a child. You did not mean what you did, and if I wish to move on, I must forgive and forget. You’re one of the only pieces of happiness these lives have ever given me.”

He laughed and tears spilled from his eyes. He embraced me. “I won’t mess up this time, I swear it.”

I looked over his shoulder, expressionless tears running down my cheeks. Tears for lives past, for the constant pain of Blue, for my lost family, and for my new family finally regained. I would hold onto him with both hands, because there was no greater love than a love for your child. Blood or not.

And as it turned out as years ticked by, change was entirely possible—especially if you changed for someone you loved.
