I take his hands immediately, and Knives pulls me into a tight hug. “I’ll never be able to repay him. He always saved me, and now he gave me you.”
Mason made sure Seer’s prediction didn’t come true.
“There are more girls in a room down the hall, on the left,” I tell Reaper.
Reaper takes charge and grabs the keys off the dead guards’ body before handing them to Skirt and telling him, “Go get the girls.”
“Thank you for coming for me, and I’m so sorry about Mason.” I begin to cry. The adrenaline is starting to wear off. I’m overwhelmed and exhausted.
“I’ll always come for you, just like my brother always came for me. You’ll never have to worry about that.” Knives lays a kiss on my forehead.
A minute later, Natalia comes out of the other room with the girls.
Reaper bends over and picks up Mason’s body. “Come on everyone; we are going home.”
We follow Reaper out, the women covered by jackets from the guys as we all huddle in the trucks.
When we get home, we can tell something is wrong.
It’s quiet.
“Moretti and Maximo are gone!” Sarah screams out the front door as Reaper jumps out of the driver’s side of the Ford Raptor.
And nothing good ever happens in silence.
One month later
“You may now kiss the bride,” Reaper officiates, finally telling me to kiss my bride. And I’m not going to half-ass this either. I dip her down over my leg, hold the back of her head, and kiss her until I know her knees are weak, and her pussy is wet.
Whistles and catcalls sound, and when I bring the kiss to an end, she nips my lip. “You put on a show on purpose.”
“As if you don’t like being the center of attention,” I wink, lifting her up until she’s standing straight again. I clasp her hand in mine and lift it in the air as another round of cheers sound.
I only wish my brother could have been here to see it.
I spent too much time being mad at him, too much time holding on to the past and the anger I felt, that I could have built new memories over his last few days on earth. We could have had a beer as men, talked as men, laughed as men, and not some silly little boys.
But I’m stubborn, and I know how to hold a fucking grudge, but I’ll never do it again.
We left a seat open for him, and Mercy is sitting next to it, my brother’s badge lying flat on the chair.
I’ll never be able to thank him enough for saving Mary’s life.
We decided to get married at the clubhouse. With friends and family around us. Yeti, Tyrant, and Chaos are on the ground.
Lady is in Poodle’s arms. She’s lasted so long, but we don’t know why she’s holding on. I’m glad she’s here, though. I’m happy everyone I love is here to see me move on with my life.
Mary leans over and whispers, “I’m pregnant, and if it’s a boy, I want to name him Mason.”
My head whips to the side so damn hard and fast, I nearly lose my balance. I can’t find the words. My mind is jumbled. I grab her hand, the one with my mom’s ring on it, and hold on tight. “Are you serious? Don’t play with me, Hellraiser. That’s a cruel joke.”
“No joking. I found out this morning,” she says, laying her hand against my cheek. “Are you happy?” she asks, her long lashes shadowing her cheeks as she blinks.
The gold band that belonged to my father now sits on my hand, and as I stare at the wedding rings, the emotion bubbling up in my chest almost stops my heart.
There was a time when I thought happiness was something earned, but it isn’t.
Happiness is something someone waits for.
And I couldn’t be happier.
“Sonofabitch! She’s pregnant!” I cheer, smiling from ear to ear, then swing her up in my arms.
“You owe me five bucks!” Maizey says, the little hustler wearing a purple princess dress.
I grin and lay another kiss on my wife. When her lips touch mine, everything fades away. It’s her. It’s me.
It’s our baby.
And as my world rights itself, I realize it’s quiet. The background noise is muted by love and happiness.
This. This is the silence I can live in, because I’m no longer alone.
I have a family.
And my ninja stars, of course.
THE END.
