“Yes. I was taking a moment. Like the night before the opening.” She nodded toward the wall of notes. “I was thinking about how far we’ve come. And how far there is to go.”
“Right now, we have nowhere to go at all.” Tad leaned down and pressed his lips to the sensitive skin on her neck and she shivered. His arms tightened around her, holding her. But she didn’t need comforting. She needed something more.
“How long do we have before Milly’s party?” Heather asked.
“An hour. Although I did say I’d help set up.” He gasped as she turned in his arms and reached down to unbuckle his belt.
“Then we’d better make this quick.” Heather tugged his worn jeans down over his thighs and let them drop to the floor. “Oops.”
“Oops indeed.” He pulled at the belt of her dress and then unbuttoned the flimsy fabric. Heather shrugged out of it and it floated to the floor. Lifting her up in his arms, Tad held her against his chest as he turned around slowly. Heather tucked her legs in so that her feet didn’t scrape against the wall of notes and mess up her careful planning.
“I hope the desk holds,” she said as Tad lowered her down onto the old wooden desk. “And that I don’t get splinters.”
“Here.” He stepped back and dragged his T-shirt over his head and placed it down next to her. She started to wriggle toward it, which made all her wobbly bits jiggle. Which Tad found hard to tear his eyes from.
“You could help a girl out.” She held out her arms and he moved to stand between them. With strong hands, he lifted her a couple of inches off the table and sat her down on the almost clean T-shirt. “I hope the paint is dry.”
He laughed. “If it isn’t, that might take some explaining.”
“Not really, since no one gets to see my nakedness but you.” She arched an eyebrow. “I am all yours, remember.”
“Oh, I do. I just feel bad for the rest of the men on the planet. Because you are the most beautiful creature I have ever seen.” He pushed her hair back from her shoulders and then unclasped her bra so that her breasts spilled out into his hands. “Oops.”
“And how many creatures have you seen, Tad Harrison?” Heather asked as she trailed her fingers down over his chest and lower, much lower. Her fingers curled around his hardened length and squeezed just hard enough to make him gasp.
“I have no recollection.” His teeth sank into his bottom lip as she stroked her hand up and down.
“So you just slept with them and then forgot them?” she asked, her fingers teasing him as she applied just the right amount of pressure.
“You make me forget everything.” He lowered his head and sucked her nipple into his mouth.
Her stomach clenched in longing. He was right, it was easy to forget everything when you were in your mate’s arms and his mouth was clamped around your nipple. Damn, he was good. He created a deep-seated longing inside her that only he could satisfy.
As he rolled his tongue around the taut bud, he slid his left hand along her thigh, teasing and exciting her skin as he moved inch by inch toward his goal.
She raised her head and latched onto his earlobe, dragging her teeth across the sensitive skin as he pushed two fingers inside her. He grazed her inner walls with each thrust of his fingers, which she matched with a stroke of her hand.
Heather was close to coming. Too close. She wanted Tad to come inside her. Lifting her knees, she encircled him with her thighs and urged him forward, her hand guiding his cock toward her. Tad drew his fingers from inside her and with one slick movement entered her.
He filled her completely, thrusting forward until he impaled her. Heather urged him deeper, harder as he pulled out and thrust back into her in a steady rhythm. There was something so primal, so powerful about Tad. His hair might be tinged with gray, but he was strong, virile with stamina most younger men would struggle to match.
Yet, when he made love to her, that primal power was sheathed in a need to please her but never hurt her. Tad loved her and worshiped her.
And over the last few weeks, the fragments of love she’d felt for him at the start of their relationship had all joined together. She loved him more than she ever thought she could love a man. What she once felt for Andy was a pale and withered thing compared to her feelings for Tad.
Feelings that soared as he came inside her and took her to new heights. Tad stretched her limits in all facets of her life. But when they made love, there were no limits. Her trust in him was complete. Just as her love for him was complete.
“We need to go.” She looked at her watch on her wrist which was draped over his shoulder as he kissed her neck in the afterglow of their lovemaking.
“Have you been timing me?” Tad lifted his head and glanced sideways at her watch. With a sigh, he pulled out of her and rummaged around for their clothes. “I’m torn between making love to you again and Milly’s party.”
“No competition.” Heather dragged her clothes back on and then hopped down off the desk. “Milly is your daughter. And you love her very much.”
He winked. “Don’t tell my mate. She might get jealous.”
“Luckily, your mate has a couple of kids of her own and knows the love for a child and the love for a mate are limitless and are not in competition with each other.” She prodded him in the chest. “But you already knew that.”
He grinned. “I did. But it’s good to hear it from my mate.”
“Then let’s go and see the other love of your life.” Heather followed Tad out of the office, shut the door securely and then set the alarm.
Ten minutes later they were driving toward the house Jake had bought all those years ago. But now there was another house almost built, standing next to it. All the building needed was a roof and it would be complete.
“I’ve looked at this same view for years, I still haven’t got used to the new building,” Tad admitted.
“Max and Josephine’s house is going to be stunning when it’s finished.” She sighed happily. “I can’t wait until our house is built.”
“Me neither, although I wonder how Jake will feel rattling around in the house we’ve shared all our lives?” Tad asked.
“He’ll have Milly most of the time.” Heather got out of the car and closed the door. “And I aim to make it my life’s work to find him his mate.” She held up her hand as Tad tried to protest. “I know it’s not that easy, but I have to do something.”
“I wish there was something we could do.” Tad and Heather walked toward the house together. The rest of the guests were due to arrive soon, but it looked as if the others had nearly finished getting the house decorated and the food laid out.
“There you are, we thought you’d gotten lost.” Josephine stood framed by the front door, with Milly in her arms.
“It took a little longer than expected to close up the barn,” Tad explained as he held out his arms for the birthday girl.
“I bet it did.” Josephine gave them a knowing smile. “Come in, we were going to have a drink together, just family, before everyone else arrives.”
“Is everything ready?” Tad asked. “If not, I can carry on getting set up.” He jiggled a giggling Milly in his arms.
“No, this way.” Josephine’s voice carried a sharp edge. “Sorry. Max and I have something we want to share with you.”
Tad and Heather exchanged a curious look as they followed Josephine through into the kitchen where Max and Jake were leaning against the counter, discussing plans for the house while Bella and Zack bashed each other with balloons.
“Mommy!” Bella ran over and hugged her mom, while Zack ran up behind her and bashed her over the head with a balloon.
“Oh, no birthday cake for you, Zack!” Heather tickled him as he tried to get away.
“Kids!” Jake said as he abandoned the plans and grabbed Zack around the waist and swung him around. Zack giggled so hard he went red in the face.
“And it’s kids we want to talk about,” Max said as Josephine went to stand next to
him and threaded her arm around his waist.
“You’re not…” Tad asked, pointing to them each in turn.
“No. I don’t think we’re going to be that lucky.” She took a deep breath. “But we have spoken to Fiona and we are on the list for those wanting to adopt. She said that because we’re shifters, it could happen soon since they are always looking for shifters to adopt.”
“That’s so exciting!” Heather ran forward and hugged Josephine. “You will make wonderful parents.” She turned and hugged Max. “I’m so happy for you.”
“We have a long road ahead of us,” Max said. “But we know with your love and support, we will make it.”
“Congratulations.” Jake hugged his brother and sister-in-law.
The four other adults in the room exchanged glances. Each of them the same. If only Jake could find his mate everything would be perfect.
Maybe, on this special day, when the little girl the Harrison brothers had let into their lives reached one year old, fate might be listening and lend a hand so they could all have a happy ever after.
