The Oddyssey Page 7

by David Slavin

“If I may, Freya,” interrupts Principal Deadipus, “I think there’s something you should know. With the exception of some well-timed wedgies, the Gods did far more harm than good on this journey. And, to be perfectly honest, so did I. We are only here because of your son Oddonis and the rest of the Odd Gods. It was their quick thinking, their ingenuity, and their diplomacy skills that saved the day . . . and Olympus.”

  “Is that true, Oddonis?”

  “Umm . . . well . . . everybody helped, Mom,” I reply.

“Adonis?” she says, turning to my brother.

Then Mom shakes out her arms and rotates her head. She closes her eyes, clears her throat, and . . . oh, man, look out . . . it’s Thunder Mother time again!

Adonis is shivering in his sandals—just like the rest of us!

“Uhhh . . . not everybody, Mom,” Adonis blubbers softly.

“Louder, please!” Mom thunders. “So everyone can hear you.”

“I said, ‘Not everybody helped.’ I wouldn’t be acting very godly if I said I did it,” Adonis admits. “Because I didn’t help. Not really. Oddy did most of it.”

  Whoa! What did he say???

“And what exactly did Oddonis do???” rumbles Mom.

Adonis sighs deeply. “He got us out of trouble,” he declares. “I just got us into trouble. I thought power meant being, y’know, POWERFUL! But that didn’t work so great this time. Oddy, Mathdweeba, Windbreaker, and Grumpy taught me the power of using your brains, instead of your fists.”

“Don’t forget the power of wedgies,” I say.

“Right.” Adonis smiles. “Anyway, it was the Odds that made things even. Those guys are the real heroes.”

“Wow . . . thanks, Adonis,” I say. “You’re not going to hug me, are you?”

“Hey,” Adonis replies, “if Dad and Hades can do it, I guess we can, too.”

  Here we go again!

  Oh, no . . .
