The Baby Shift- Florida Page 4

“I…no. What are you going to do?”

“It isn’t all bad news. I spent the night going through Ezra’s cabin, and I have an address that I believe belongs to his supplier. I just wanted to stop by and say, well, goodbye and thank you. I hate what Ezra put you through, but if you hadn’t looked enough like his wife to make him snap, I don’t know how many more he would have killed. I’m just sorry you had to suffer for my incompetence, and sorry that I had my sights so set on you that I was blind to the real threat.”

She smiled, understandingly at him. “To be honest, I probably would have suspected myself too. Just go find out who’s running this and take them down. And Matt…take care of yourself.”

He laughed without humor, and she wondered if he would take her advice. He might not. Some peopled seemed to live so hard that they pushed until there was nothing left. She had the feeling that Matt was headed down that road if something didn’t slow him down soon.

“You take care of yourself too, Jordan. Call if you ever need anything.”

Matt left, and Alex followed him to the front room to say goodbye, leaving Jordan to get dressed. It seemed so surreal that a short twenty-four hours ago she’d been ready to die. Now, she had everything she needed. There wouldn’t be any more poisonings, and she could return to her medical training. It would be better than it had before though. The threat of losing the life she’d worked so hard to build had shown her just how precious it was.

The shifters that had been ill slowly returned to health as fall’s chill robbed the trees of their leaves and the icy fingers of winter moved ever closer. It was Florida, though, she thought with a smile. The milder winter would make sure that she could still make the hike to and from Uncle Bill’s safely. Although, by next summer, she might have some difficulty; she thought with a smile as she pressed a hand against her still flat stomach. By next summer it would be fuller.

The community would come together next spring to build their cabin, and she would spend the spring with the love of her life, preparing for the arrival of their child. What would have happened, she wondered, if Ezra had never poisoned shifters? Would she and Alex have kept that professional, polite distance for the next three years before going their separate ways?

Jordan wasn’t sure, but she did know that she couldn’t regret one step taken in her life’s journey, thus far. How could she, when her footsteps had led her here? It was the perfect ending to her travels and the perfect beginning of a new family.
