He gazed deeply into her eyes and she returned the look before he turned away from her and walked out.

THE SUN WAS SETTING over the fields in the distance and she knew that the slow, mounting suffering of Extinction Phase 1 would start to settle into her. She sat down on the edge of her cot and buried her face in her hands. Soon the agony of millions would be upon her. She was headed to the Great Community to start her new life, all while the world fell apart.

She shut her eyes and felt herself give up. Never in her life would she submit or quit, but she didn’t even know who she was anymore. She gave into the dismembered state of her being and permitted herself to sink into nothingness.

Many hours passed, an eternity it seemed, before she dropped her hands away from her face and straightened her shoulders. Her mind sparked and she caught her breath, and then stood up facing the window. At the worst moments, insight comes—and this insight was an epiphany of sorts. In the deep dark recesses of her obliterated soul, she had realized something.

This isn’t over, she told herself. Not now, it has just started. She felt her strength suddenly surge through her, and with that her synchronic sense burst out into meaning. The answer became crystal clear. The words rang out loudly again inside her, making more and more meaning. We are here for everyone.

She inhaled, and it was as if she was taking her first breath of air. What she had been waiting for had come. The answer tossed about in her mind before she buried it deep inside of her. She put it in a place where Aion would never find it.

Then it came perfectly formed in her mind. The timing couldn’t have been any better. Samantha thought of what she would call her Replica. She had her name, and she said it over and over in her mind.

  Lilith, she said.
