The cameras were on Dyson now. He knew he was standing there stunned, but he had no idea what to do. Adam’s words had rocked him to the core. Those words had made him one of the happiest people on the planet.
The host was waving him out onto the stage. People were clapping and whistling and cheering. The whole thing still felt like a surreal dream.
He walked onto the stage on legs he could barely feel.
Adam was there for him, slipping his arms around Dyson and pulling him into a sweet kiss.
The cheering and applause grew even louder.
Dyson leaned in to whisper in Adam’s ear. His voice was unsteady. “I love you too, Mr. Collins. You’re everything to me. Thank you.”
Adam hugged him tighter. They turned to face the cameras, holding hands. Dyson couldn’t really see the audience. He didn’t know if it was the bright lights or simply how dazed he was feeling right now, but he could definitely still hear the people clapping hard.
He was smiling like a fool. He couldn’t help it. He knew he looked like a love-struck idiot on national television, but he didn’t care. Right now, he was filled with a depth of happiness he’d never experienced before.
One he never wanted to end. And he promised to himself that now it never would. Because Adam Collins had won his heart with a last-minute play, in a game Dyson hadn’t even known they were still playing.
But this time, Dyson was happy to give the victory to the man he loved.
EPILOGUE
ADAM
New York
The final hike of the game went off perfectly. Adam caught the ball and took a knee. His gaze was locked on the clock as it counted down toward zero. His heart was pounding, and he was breathing fast.
But when the clock hit zero, the game was finally over. The Dallas Razorbacks had beaten the New York Thundershock, 23 to 20. The game had been a nail-biter right until the final whistle, but they had done it.
They were going to the playoffs.
He threw his hands in the air and let loose with a yell of pure triumph. His teammates were yelling, cheering, jumping around him, but Adam immediately headed for the sidelines.
There was only one man he wanted right now. Dyson Drake.
He spotted his bodyguard on the sidelines where the coach had let him watch the game. Adam barely felt his teammates slapping him on the back and calling him the MVP of the game. He only had eyes for Dyson.
And damn, he couldn’t stop grinning as he rushed toward the big, scary-looking bodyguard who was cheering wildly, pumping his fist in the air as if the Razorbacks had just won a world championship. But for their young team, this was the first step to something greater. He wasn’t going to worry about the playoffs. Not yet. He was going to fully enjoy this victory. Because they had earned it.
He finally reached Dyson. He didn’t even hesitate. He wrapped the bodyguard in a fierce hug and then, just for the absolute hell of it, planted a kiss right on his mouth.
Dyson was surprised, but he was grinning too. Adam could see how much the kiss had meant to him. Even if it wasn’t one of those kisses where people shouted at them to get a room, it was still a bold statement.
But Adam was done with living in the shadows. He knew what made him happy. Loving and being loved by Dyson made him happy. That—and football—was all he needed.
At that moment, his teammates decided to dump a cooler full of yellow Gatorade on both of them.
Yeah, he was hot and sweaty after the game, but the liquid was ice cold. It was hard to be angry about it, even though the coach probably deserved it more. His teammates were laughing and cheering. That gesture simply showed that they accepted Adam the way they always had. And now they accepted Dyson too.
He felt his chest go tight with emotion, a lump in his throat at what the simple and obnoxious act of acceptance meant to him. It meant more than he could say.
More than he could ever say.
The cameras were on them. Sports reporters were crowding around, shouting questions he couldn’t hear. There was too much noise, music, and cheering.
He knew the celebration tonight would be wild after the post-game interviews and shows. The team had earned itself a big party. Every single one of them had brought their A-game. He was proud to be a part of the team, the victory. He would’ve been proud, even if they had lost.
He grinned wider than ever. But he was beyond happy they had won. It was always better to win.
The only other thing that made him happier was the man he had his arms around. His personal bodyguard. Dyson had saved him from the acid attack, and he had saved him from a life of lies and loneliness.
He didn’t know how he could ever repay that, but he was determined to try. Tonight, after the party, when he got Dyson alone and back to their hotel suite, he was going to show his love in all kinds of ways.
Adam leaned in close to Dyson’s ear, but he still had to almost shout to be heard. “I love you. More than anything.”
Dyson turned to him. There was such love and emotion in his eyes—such a surprising thing on a face that Dyson worked so hard to keep intimidating—that Adam’s heart leaped.
Then Dyson pulled him back into another tight embrace and kissed him. It wasn’t any quick kiss either. No, this was a perfect kiss as camera flashes went off and the cheering rose to a higher level.
It was a perfect kiss after a perfect win from his perfect man.
