But who?
It took him nearly ten minutes to bring the coins out of his pocket. Slowly he put in enough to phone halfway round the globe.
He propped himself up against the wall of the kiosk and dialled without conscious thought.
“Xxxtasy,” a voice said. This call is costing 44p a minute and 33p a minute off-peak. My name is Sharon. What would you like to talk about?”
Slowly and with care he said, “I want to talk to Barbara.”
“I’m sorry but we can’t take calls for individuals.”
“I want to talk to Barbara.”
“Caller, I’m sorry but our rules…”
“I want…” There was a long silence.
“Are you there, caller?”
“I want…to talk…to Barbara He began to slip down on to the floor.
“I’m sorry, but Barbara doesn’t work here any — ”
That was all he heard. It was all he ever heard.
