Built: An enemies to lovers second chance bad-boy alpha romance Page 6

by Marr, Maggie

Shit. My heart drops. We are busted. And I’m not certain why, but the idea of my big brother knowing that Jake and I just had sex makes me feel completely uneasy, even though I’m a grown woman. What’s that all about?

  Jake and I turn around.

“We aren’t trying to fool anyone,” Jake says and he puts his arm around me. “Not this time. This is real, and this is permanent.” He swallows. I swallow. We both look at Dave and wait for his reaction. I brace myself.

“Well, it’s about damn time,” Dave says and a grin splits across his face. “We’ve all been waiting for you two to get your shit together and understand that you’re meant to be spending the rest of your lives with each other.”

My heart nearly bursts in my chest. I look at Jake and he looks at me and he pulls me close and kisses me again.

  Epilogue

  Becca

I walk into Galvenetti’s. Marge meets me at the front door.

“You’re lookin’ good again tonight, Becca,” she says and smiles. Galvenetti’s has become Jake and my Friday night ritual for the last six months. We like it here. This place means something to us and the tiramisu is to die for.

“Thanks,” I say, scanning the place. Usually Galvenetti’s is hopping by eight on a Friday night but there isn’t a person in the entire place. Well except for Marge, and Joey who I can see through the kitchen doors. “Kind of quiet,” I say.

“We got a buy-out tonight,” Marge says and shoots me a smile. Her gaze travels across the room and I follow where she looks.

  Jake.

He sits at our table. The big round booth in the far corner of the restaurant, the one that he used for a decade to wine-and-dine the ladies until he stood me up. I smile, remembering when it became our Friday night booth.

Jake stands. And I see it in his eyes. The table has roses and a bottle of Champagne.

A chill rushes through me, because…I know. I know what Jake is about to do and here, in our restaurant, is the perfect place for me to say yes. I walk toward him and he meets me halfway. He stares into my eyes and I see it, I see forever there. Our forever.

“Becca?” He drops to one knee.

And I can’t help it, the tears, they start rolling down my cheeks. I cover my mouth with my hand because I am his girl and he is my guy and there is no one else for either one of us.

“I love you more than anything in this world and I am sorry it took me three decades to figure that out. I want to spend the rest of my life loving you and making you laugh.” He opens the small case he’s holding and in it a diamond sparkles…along with the rest of my life.

  “Will you marry me?”

“Yes,” I say. “Yes, yes, yes.”

He is up and on his feet with his arms around me and I know that this is exactly where I want to spend the rest of my life.

  Epilogue

  Jake

My wife is a gorgeous pregnant woman. She doesn’t believe she’s gorgeous with her cankles, and giant belly, and swollen fingers—but I’ve never seen a more beautiful creature than the one right here beside me on the couch.

“I have to pee,” Becca says. “Again. Can you help me get up?”

I fight the urge to make a hippopotamus joke, because she likes those even less than when I call her Tiger. I stand up and face her. I grab her forearms and gently lift as she stands.

“Oh, I’m so tired of this,” she says, pressing her hand to the small of her back.

And I get it. Those two kids in there take up a lot of room. She waddles away from me and toward the bathroom, and I do mean waddle, because Becca hasn’t really walked in about three months. I think it’s adorable, she hates it.

  “Jake!”

Hearing her call, I spring off the couch and down the hall. She stands there in the bathroom doorway, her eyes wide. “It’s time,” she says.

  “It’s time?”

“It’s time.” She shoots me a giant smile. She’s scared. I’m scared. She’s excited. I’m excited. But the thing is we are scared and excited together. And that, the together part, is what makes everything— every win, every loss, everything—that much better, and will for the rest of our lives.
