Not Quite Beast Page 11

by Kaye Draper

He straightened and turned to me. "Yes. I have people. People who work for the city. People for whom it's just a job. People I did not hire, who were assigned to me, and who I've yet to test and weed out properly. People who see a human, or a fiend, or a cur and immediately let their own biases rule their decisions. And they are also people who don't have half the experience you a have with the wastelands and all the threats that exist there."

I gritted my teeth together. Why the hell did this idiot think any of that was my problem?

"I'll pay you generously, of course," he added. "And I'll supply any weapon or equipment you need."

I glanced sideways at him. "Any equipment?"

He nodded. "Provided it really will help you keep my cousin safe."

I grinned. "I get to keep the stuff afterwards."

He smiled back, like a tolerant parent. "Only if you agree to continue to help me when I need it."

Ah…now there was the catch. Did I really want to agree to be his hired errand-person? But my mind was already whirling, imagining all the fancy, shiny shit I could buy on his dime. Equipment I'd drooled over for years. And…I could always give it all back if I didn't want to work for him anymore, right?

"Fine," I ground out. "But I can only speak for myself. The rest of my guild makes their own decisions."

Theo pressed his lips together as he considered, then his eyes locked on mine. "Agreed."

I started reassembling my gun, waving it in the general direction of the door. "Awesome. Now go the fuck away. I was enjoying some quality time with the love of my life before you interrupted."

He glanced at my gun and I rolled my eyes. "Not the gun, idiot." I pointed at the Jeep. "Maud."

He laughed and made his way to the door. "You kids have fun then. Far be it from me to interrupt a romantic interlude."

  Fucking weirdo.
