"I see.” He sat back against the sofa but didn't let her go.

"And that's why I can't marry you,” Rae told him gently. “I didn't trust my gift for a long time. I wasn't sure I could live with it. Now I know that I can and I know the truth. I can't let you face what I know will happen."

"That's too bad.” He sighed deeply. “Because you're stuck with me."

  "Steve—"

He took her in his arms and looked into her eyes. “We have something special between us. I don't know if I'll ever understand it. But I want to spend the rest of my life trying. I love you because you're strong and sensitive and you see the important things in life. I want you to love me so much that it doesn't matter about the other Harris women and their men. Or anything else that's happened before."

Rae couldn't breathe. “You still want me to marry you?"

"I do.” He kissed her chin and cheeks. “More than anything in the world. Bryce wants to live with her angel. And I want an angel in my bed every night."

"All right. Maybe Lessie can come up with something that will help.” She laughed and cried at once.

Or maybe you and I will be different than the others.

She stared at him. “D-did you say something?"

"Did you hear me?” He kissed her, wiping away the tears on her face while she wrapped her arms around his neck. “Now that's interesting!” It only took a moment for their bodies to remember one another and the heat started to build between them.

Lessie came to the parlor door a few minutes later. She immediately re-directed her young charge back to the kitchen. “I think we better find something else to do. What about stringing some cranberries?"

Bryce was perfectly happy to go back to the fascinating kitchen and the cookies. “Where's Uncle Steve and my angel?"

"Let's just say that they're busy right now and leave it at that, okay, honey? Tell me what you want for Christmas?"

Bryce smiled, showing an empty spot where she lost a tooth. “A brother or sister to play with."

Lessie laughed and kissed her cheek. “You might get your wish come next Christmas! Your uncle Steve and your angel are hard at work on it right now!"
