“We’re in business, Cuz,” A big grin spread across Lenny’s face. “We still have to get our personal PI licenses, of course, but, early this morning, Randy and I were sitting in our office trying to figure out what to do when this package arrived from Langley, Virginia. It had our business permits and papers and everything. It even had a pardon from the governor for both of your and Aunt Helen’s Break-and-Enter charges.” Lenny fished out a folded piece of paper from his back pocket. “Here’s the letter the documents came with.”
Phoebe sent Morgan a surprised glance. He shrugged and read the note over her shoulder. It was short and succinct.
Phoebe, the Indian government wanted to reward you for finding their lost property, but couldn’t since you’re still officially on our government’s payroll. They sent a check to the Sri Lankan family instead. However, they were so impressed by your team’s work, they asked me to give you a head’s up that if they run into another troublesome issue, they’ll be asking me to give you a call. Be good now.
Conroy’s bold signature was outlined below.
“He’s letting you go,” Morgan said. “That must be what this means.”
She nodded. Conroy had many faults but, once he admitted defeat, he knew how to end their relationship graciously. After all, he’d scored a victory by returning to headquarters with that jewel in hand, the hero of the day. Yet, it must have tasted a bit of sour. He’d accomplished his task but lost the woman he loved and the daughter he’d wanted.
His loss was her family’s gain. The Clay women were free at last.
“I’m home for good,” she whispered and kissed Morgan to seal that promise.
