Harvey Farmer waved from his makeshift corral where two baby goats, a lamb, and a colt were ready to be petted with his supervision.
Bernice walked over with a smile, carrying two cages that contained lop-eared rabbits. She handed them off to Harvey.
“Where did you find the rabbits?” I asked.
“Oh, Brad asked the 4-H kids to help locate his mother’s missing rabbits. He’s donating them to Harvey’s petting farm.”
“And I’m grateful too.” Harvey laughed. “It’s not every day children get to see rabbits of this caliber.”
Three school buses pulled up, and I was shocked at the number of children who piled out. My great-granddaughter Andrea toddled in the egg field with Sophia and Bill watching over her. They made such a wonderful family.
Bonnie Sue and Bobbie Sue wandered over. “We can’t thank you enough,” Bobbie Sue said. “The sheriff dropped all charges against me.”
“I think you should thank Misha for that.” I smiled.
“Maybe you’re right.”
“My sister is just being stubborn,” Bonnie Sue said. “She doesn’t believe Misha is really a changed man.”
“Maybe he is and maybe he isn’t, only the future will tell,” Eleanor said. “So what are your plans now?”
“We’re heading to Oklahoma,” Bonnie Sue said. “I don’t want to stick around Misha any longer than I have to.”
Bobbie Sue rolled her eyes. “She’s nursing him back to health.”
Bonnie Sue tried to suppress a smile but failed miserably.
“I’m glad somebody is there for him.”
The twins wandered off, and Sheriff Peterson and the coroner Walter Smitty walked over.
“What are you doing here, Smitty?” I asked. “I hope you’re not planning to find a body here.”
“You never can tell with you ladies in attendance.”
“We owe you for showing up as you did, Peterson,” I said.
“A tether going off will do that. It’s the only way you’d get help out where you were. You can’t get cell service there.”
“Did that key ever surface?” I asked.
“Yes, and the rightful owner is now in possession of it.”
“Who would that be, Misha?”
Peterson laughed. “No, Constance’s son Brad. He’s distraught over what happened, but he’ll be fine in time. A strange turn of events. You don’t hear of too many father and daughter murder teams.”
“Oh, please tell me there is only the one murder they committed.”
“I’m pleased to say that’s the case. You ladies are really coming into your own in investigations, not that I’ll ever be a hundred percent happy that you stick your noses where they don’t belong.”
“We’re learning when to share information and when to hold back,” Eleanor said. “I’m glad we never had to talk to Erin Nagy’s husband and tell him about her affair.”
“I wouldn’t worry about that any longer. The word in town is that he’s filed for divorce. Apparently, he wasn’t clueless to his wife’s extramarital affairs.”
I smiled. “What a little Peyton Place Tawas has become.”
“How about we don’t put that on the travel brochure.” Peterson laughed.
The men wandered off, and Eleanor and I moved before the children wanting to pet the animals ran us over.
I walked over to Tony and Henry. “So where are these men who came from out of town to help you with the dinner on Easter?” I asked.
Henry frowned. “Right over there.”
I laughed when I saw four old men practicing putting.
“I for one am glad. I’d hate for anything to happen to my favorite couple in town,” I said.
“No worries there,” Henry said lovingly to Tony as they walked off.
Eleanor threw an arm around my shoulders. “We did it again, Agnes.”
“What’s that?”
“Making investigating look easy. To tell you the truth, I’m sleeping for a week after the egg hunt, and I might not wake up until Christmas.”
“One holiday at a time, old girl, one holiday at a time.”
About this Author
USA Today Bestseller Madison Johns is most known for her Agnes Barton Senior sleuths mystery series featuring lively and zany senior citizen sleuths -- Agnes Barton and Eleanor Mason. Her time working at a nursing home was all the inspiration she needed to portray realistic characters that readers have gone on to love. Her first book Armed and Outrageous has solidified her in the publishing world and her series has been well received.
Madison's aim was simple; she wanted to change how the world viewed senior citizens. Why you could take a stroll through her neighborhood in Mid-Michigan where some of the liveliest seniors live to know she wasn't that far off the mark.
She knew if she used what she had learned while caring for senior citizens to good use, it would result in something quite unique.
