The man leaned close to his ear. “Nissasa watches and waits. We shall give him what he desires. You must trust me, Wolloh, or all is lost.”

Wolloh forced a fragmented reply from his blistered throat.

The man touched his forehead. Life fled.

Relevart gripped his rowan staff and stared down at his favorite student. Masking his emotions, he walked into the sitting room. All eyes turned his direction. He leaned wearily on his staff and shook his head.

One Man rose. Allynae froze in place. Stebben let out a harsh cry that faded into a silence so burdened with disbelief and dismay that it threatened to smother them all.

  Appendix

  A Brief History of Myrrh

The second Millennium of the New Age dawned bright and clear throughout the Inner Universe. Ancient stars died and new ones burst into life. Galaxies formed and disappeared, and life continued its all-encompassing journey of discovery.

In the Milky Way Galaxy, Earth followed her elliptical path around the sun, her humanoid population developing or declining with the passing centuries until a giant asteroid careening through space collided with the southern hemisphere of the planet. Debris catapulted into the far reaches of the universe. The largest piece ricocheted off another asteroid and, over time, drifted into the gravitational pull of Thera, a small, humanoid inhabited planet in the Fourth Galaxy from the Great Central Sun.

To prevent the collision of two bodies of such huge mass, the Galactic Guardians of the Inner Universe placed the powerful Evolsefil Crystal in the deep caverns of the Dojanack Mountains, once known as the Cascade Mountains of North America. Using it to connect the core of Old Earth to the core of Thera, they ensured the safety of both. The Guardians christened this last vestige Myrrh, the land of healing and rejuvenation, and appointed Five Fathers on Thera to design and build a city to surround and protect it. A Guardian, Almiralyn, was trained to oversee it.

  A Brief History of Idronatti

The City of Idronatti spanned one third of the small planet of Thera. Designed and built by the Five Fathers at the request of the Galactic Guardians of the Fourth Galaxy from the Great Central Sun, it was created to house a hidden dimension that protected the last remaining piece of the planet Earth and the sought after Evolsefil Crystal.

In its beginning cycles, Idronatti exemplified the highest values of mankind. Gradually, greed and a lust for power drove the Fathers to create The Plan, a set of strict guidelines, which provided a structured lifestyle for Idronatti’s citizens. To monitor and police The Plan, the Peoples Progress Protectors, PPP, was created. Over the course of time, the majority of people in The City ceased to resist The Plan and settled into the disciplined regimentation required of them. Those who chose to rebel were taken to the Five Towers, the headquarters of the PPP, for discipline and possible internment. Each of the Fathers oversaw one of the towers. And each tower housed a different level of Plan breaker. Incarceration in Tower Five meant life imprisonment or death.
