Indra
3 years ago . . .
Something warm and wet flows down my cheek. I feel heat above me and turn my neck slowly, even though the pain is agonizing. Opening my eyes, I realize what’s happened as my sight lands on my husband. We’ve been in an accident.
“Cornell?” I call out his name but he doesn’t respond, his rich chocolate eyes blankly staring in my direction.
Cornell and I took the weekend away from our busy office jobs in Phoenix and came out to the Grand Canyon National Park. Even though we’ve both lived in Arizona our entire lives, neither of our parents were the type to take us out here. They weren’t exactly campers, but more of the church going, backyard barbeque type.
I reach out my hand to him in the driver’s seat and touch his skin, but he doesn’t move. In the back of my mind I know what this means, though I don’t want to accept it. We were celebrating our sixth wedding anniversary with a beautiful weekend in nature and . . . God, what happened?
We drove out to Desert View Point and toured around the stone tower. It was on Cornell’s bucket list since he loves old architecture. The way I drove up here he was telling me facts about some of the structures we had to stop and see.
Flashbacks of us walking back to the car suddenly resurface. Cornell looked tired and I asked him if he wanted me to drive to where we’re staying, but he didn’t. I had driven all day so he insisted on driving this evening.
Moving my eyes around the Jeep I can see the sun is almost down now. I think we left around five and we’re in the middle of summer. God, we must’ve been here for hours! Every fiber of my being wants to freak out, to throw every rational thought out the window. I can’t, though. I don’t have the time to freak out right now. Looking back to Cornell, I try to see if my gut instinct is wrong.
But as I look up a bit further, I see a piece of metal from the roof jammed into his skull and let out an agony filled cry.
Okay.
Alright.
At least I know what I’m dealing with. I’m the general manager for a loan servicing company in the heart of Phoenix which means I continuously have my phone on me. Even when I’m off, there are typically a couple bodies in the office on the weekends who log in overtime. We mainly deal with auto loans, so our only typical day off is Sundays. That being said, it’s likely I’ll always need to respond to an email.
The last time I remember having my phone is when I slid it into my crossbody purse. It was in my lap as we were driving and now, I’m not sure where it is. The sun is starting to go down and I’m running out of options. I can’t imagine the thought of being stuck here all night long. Thinking fast, I decide to not look for my purse and lean toward Cornell. Eventually, I’m able to stretch my arm far enough to lay on the horn. This is when I realize the airbag didn’t deploy. Neither of them did.
Oh my God. How am I even still alive?!
I keep pressing on the horn over and over again until the little light we had turns to darkness. Unsure how much time has passed I keep pressing on the horn and see a pair of headlights rolling up. I stop pushing on the horn and yell for help. “Help me! I’m in here and I can’t get out!” My right leg has been confined by something and that’s when it hits me. The warmth I was feeling over my leg is my blood dripping over my lower extremities.
I’ve been bleeding here for hours with my husband’s dead body lying beside me.
Every bit of ration flies out the window while my body starts to shake and I scream like my life depends on it. When I suggested we come out here for a weekend away . . . I never thought this could happen.
I lost my best friend. The man I’ve known since I was five years old. The one who beat up the first bully who ever made fun of me. The one who asked me out to every dance and then took a step back when I was in high school and wanted to see other guys. We made our way back to each other before graduation, knowing our love was one of a kind. Moved to two separate cities and went to college, getting engaged and navigating the choppy long-distance waters. We were married and rented our first apartment soon after we graduated college and now, we’ve just celebrated our sixth wedding anniversary.
I’ve just lost the most important person in my life, and I don’t know how I’ll ever cope with it.
Chapter One
I swear I will make you suffer in ways you never imagined
~ Unknown
Dixon
It’s hard to believe it’s early August. The heat wave we’ve been damned to deal with over the summer has made us all grumpy fucks. Thankfully we were able to sort out the air conditioning problems we’d been having. But, we were giving the kids priority over us brothers. Especially Kade and Ivy’s twins. They’re still fresh out of the oven, only a few months old at this point. Raven and Hawk had the next priority since she has guardianship over her little sisters, Bridget and Danica. Kat was next since she’s pregnant, but now we all have air conditioning, even in the clubhouse.
“Hey Dix’,” Sakura says the second she walks into the clubhouse. She’s dubbed me this annoying nickname because she knows how much it gets on my fuckin’ nerves. Hawk on the other hand loves to rub it in too.
She and I have become good friends over the last couple months. She isn’t the type of woman I usually allow to keep me company. I’d be lyin’ if I said she wasn’t a breath of fresh air, though. Typically, the type of chicks I have around me are the ones stuck in my bed. Not Sakura though. Nope, she’s claimed by Mouser. Hell, those two sure are somethin’ when you put them together. Mouser made a remark the other day and said he’s never wrapped his shit up when he fucks her. He doesn’t even know if she’s on birth control and all I’m over here thinkin’ is how those two makin’ babies together . . . fuck man, they’d be models. Combine a cocky pretty boy with a gorgeous Japanese woman. How could they not be fuckin’ models?
“What’s up?” I ask, lifting my eyes up from the book I’m readin’. Now, I’m not the kinda fucker who got an A+ in English or any of that, but I do enjoy readin’ a good book. I can usually finish one within a month and right now my current read is 1984 by George Orwell. I’m about half-way through it at this point.
Her eyes drift down to the book in my hands, “Oh, sorry. I didn’t realize you were reading.”
“You never do,” I jokingly say, takin’ a small dig at her. Every time she needs somethin’ I’m right in the middle of my book. She must have a hidden camera on me that sends a notification to her damn phone.
“What’s this one about?” She inquires.
“Eh, it’s said in a future dystopian style world. There’s constant surveillance by the government and a war. Winston, the main dude in the story works for these fucks named the Ministry of Truth. He pretty much is their fuckin’ bitch, re-writing history to what the government wants it to say. But, he runs into this secret organization who’s tryin’ to destroy the state. Now it’s just startin’ to get interestin’.”
“Oh, wow. That’s intense. I needed to steal you for a bit, but if you’re in too deep with your book I won’t disturb you.”
Sighing, I put my bookmark on the page I ended on and set the book on the wooden table in front of me. “You know I’d do anythin’ for you. What’s goin’ on?”
Sakura is the head bitch in charge of the Bad Bunnies Brothel, a legal brothel we just founded here in Las Vegas. The club just purchased a plot of land about five miles off the interstate. It’s gated and pre
tty fuckin’ luxurious. We’re not quite finished with renovations, though. That’ll take another month or two, but we’re about half-way done. Because of it some of the girls can still get some work done. Sakura did mention she’s havin’ a couple of the ol’ ladies here help her manage the joint. I think she mentioned somethin’ about Raven and . . . Tania? Fuck if I can remember. I’ll have to ask her again later.
“The sign guy just called me and said we can come pick it up. I was hoping you’d drive us out there and could put it in the back of your truck . . . and then help me install it?” I break out into laughter at that. Sakura doesn’t want me to help her install it. She wants me to be the fuckin’ muscle for this shit. Whatever. I’ll do it.
Nodding, I rise from the wooden chair. “Yeah, let’s go grab my keys.”
The two of us walk over to the clubhouse door and I pick up the keys to my Dodge Ram and hold the door for Sakura. She walks out first and we both get in my truck and I start drivin’ down the dirt lane. “Alright, where we goin’?”
