“Don’t expect it to be so easy next time.” I’ve already decided to hone a tree’s worth of quarterstaves and leave them at strategic points around the farm.

“You shouldn’t, either. Popping a shoulder is quick and easy, but I do try not to repeat my tricks too many times.” Then he reaches out and catches my wrist, the one that I lodged in the trap and am now trying to work free. “Apparently it’s time I made my escape,” he says with a note of regret that might or might not be affected, and wraps one well-muscled arm around my neck.

I know what he’s doing—it’s the seven-second blackout by cutting off bloodflow to the brain—and I start to writhe and protest but he lays his body flat and heavy over mine and shushes me.

“Dawn’s coming, and I need time to put all your systems back online, not to mention unass your property.” Despite my attempted struggles, I know that within seconds I’ll be unconscious. Just before the darkness takes me I hear him say, “It was nice to meet you, Asha.”
