She spoke again.
“Swear that you won’t ever come anywhere near me again. I have to live with what I did every day and believe me that’s punishment enough for anyone, I still don’t know if I’ll make it. My life was changed forever that night, and not only by the rape. I’m a nurse, it’s my job to help people and I carry the memory of that boy with me every second. Will you let me carry on, I’m a good nurse.”
He grunted at that.
“I am, I do my very best every day. Will you let me carry on and try to make up for what happened? Go back and take your job back. I’m sorry about your mum, I truly am, it was wrong but I didn’t do anything like that.”
He moved his pounding head carefully and raised his eyes to look her in the face. Another nod passed between them as the blackbird out in the garden noted the lightening sky and began the dawn chorus. Perhaps it was over, perhaps it never would be, not really, but here was an end to this stage of the thing and really what other choice was there, for either of them?
