“I’m sorry, Nix. I know he’s your friend,” I tell him while placing my head on his chest.
“He’s still my friend,” he tells me. “Just not in charge of my security detail anymore. I worked with my new team to set up that story saying I’m on shoot in China. It was an operation of sorts to catch Marla. We caught her, and she’s been arrested for felony stalking and attempted kidnapping. There were a slew of other charges, too, since she came into the airport with loaded weapons.”
“So what happens now? Are you actually going to shoot in China somewhere?” I ask him.
Phoenix plants a kiss on my forehead. “Not for a while, Lena. I love you. I don’t care how we make this work as long as we do. I can take off as much time as we need to figure things out. Besides, Rex told me you’re starting a new firm and may need a charming actor’s endorsement.”
“I want to punch Rex in the face and smother him with kisses all at the same time,” I giggle.
“Me, too.”
“You know we owe him for this, right? He’s never going to let us forget about this,” I warn him.
Phoenix laughs. “I believe it. It’s rare that a pain in the ass like Rex Handler lets anything go. We’ll just get him an amazing wedding gift.”
“I got something even better for him—years of free advice, professional and otherwise, that’s kept his ass out of jail and in business. I deserve this freebie,” I chuckle.
“No.” Phoenix lifts my chin with the curve of his index finger, peering into my eyes. “No, what you deserve is my love and appreciation for putting up with me and letting me fall in love with you. I told you that day in your office you’re not getting rid of me that easily. Prepare to deal with me for a very long time.”
I push myself up to kiss him gently on the lips. “I love you, too, Phoenix, and believe me, I’m prepared for you to be a pain in my ass for a very long time.”
