Chapter One
Charlie Evans hated mornings. It wasn’t just a mild dislike but a passionate hate for the chirping of birds and the rising orange orb that insisted on calling itself the sun. Okay, it was New York, so less chirping of birds and more honky honk honk but the principle applied. Besides, with Van Der Meer Library nestled in the suburbs there was the odd bird or two in the trees. She might have hated mornings but she loved waking up in New York. It gave her a sense of being part of something that was bigger than herself. The millions of people rushing off to work, the sights, the smells, and the pizza all called out to her in a way she had never felt in her hometown. She’d come to New York once before on a girls’ trip and she knew that she’d want to live here for the rest of her life.
Charlie walked to the Van Der Meer Library and smiled at the sight of it. She’d only recently started working there. Before that it had been some high rise at the Upper East Side where the secretaries were thin and snooty. Charlie suspected she’d gotten the job on looks alone – she was leggy and curvy with a lithe athletic physique that complemented her angled face and full lips. Coupled with almost waist-length blonde hair and wide grey eyes, Charlie had been a victim of her own fair share of catcalls and badly thought out pick-up lines. That working environment had been toxic for her. When she saw the ad for a position at the library she’d been convinced it was a sign that she was meant to change her job. She got interviewed by a woman named Celine, who was a riot and Charlie had immediately fallen in love with her. Meeting Kay had just been the icing in the cake. She knew it had been a struggle upward but she finally felt like this was where she was supposed to be. Walking around the porch to the gorgeous wooden door, she pushed her way inside, feeling the cool air of the library. She was greeted by Celine, who leaned over her own desk in a pair of jeans that were so un-Celine that Charlie frowned.
“We have casual Mondays and no one told me? I mean I have a lot of athleisure clothes that would have been soooo spot on for that,” Charlie said in lieu of a greeting, raising her brows up in question.
“Oh! Um hi,” Celine started.
“Ooooohhhhh. She caught you doing the walk of shame only less walk and more bending over. Is the bending over of shame a thing? If not can we make it one?” Kay laughed, walking into the main library holding coffee cups in a tray carefully away from the shelves on the other end of the room. Charlie couldn’t see how she could possibly spill coffee on the books, considering it was a very large room and the books were on the other side. Maybe Kay had taken a few shotput practices Charlie didn’t know about.
“Don’t you dare judge me. You didn’t sleep at home last night either, you rat bastard.” Celine narrowed her eyes and glared at Kay, who sweetly dropped off a cup of coffee at her desk.
“Yet I happen to be appropriately dressed.” Kay almost sashayed toward Charlie, who watched the two women in amusement.
“You’re also wearing jeans,” Charlie pointed out to Kay.
“These aren’t just jeans, they are apple bottoms and intentional as you can see from the artsy rips.” Kay set the tray in front of Charlie, who picked a cup at random. She gave Kay an amused look and took a sip of the heavenly brew that filled the air with the delicious aroma of expensive coffee. If she needed another reason to be thankful she worked at the library, it was the coffee.
“We overslept okay? Everett promised to take me home early because I needed a change of clothes but we had a long night. So he only had time to get dressed for work this morning. He promised he’d sort it out but short of rummaging through my clothes like some pervert, I’m not sure how he’d do that.” Celine sighed, though she didn’t look the least bit put out by the long night.
“We’re talking about a dude who found your address and phone number without ever asking you. He’ll figure something out.” Kay snorted into her cup.
“Well, he is resourceful,” Celine agreed.
“Why don’t you guys just move in together? Seems like one of you would have thought about it with all the back and forth to get clothes,” Charlie suggested with a laugh.
“You don’t think it’s too soon?” Celine asked with widened eyes.
“You guys are in love. I don’t see why not? Besides, who says when it’s too soon?” Charlie asked.
“The girl has a point. And since we’re both in relationships with men we adore…” Kay started.
“We were wondering, you interested in any man? How’s the love life?” Celine asked Charlie with a laugh.
“Guys!” Charlie exclaimed, rolling her eyes. The women were ridiculous. Now that they were both happy, of course they wanted her to be happy too.
“What? No man in the wings waiting? I doubt that. I mean you’re gorgeous and you’ve got a really amazing sense of humor. I’m curious,” Kay prodded.
“I just haven’t had that much time to settle in. I’m not really looking for a relationship. I don’t have the best luck in relationships…something always happens. It’s not worth the heartache at the end of the day, and really all that’s important is that I’m focusing on my life. I finally have a job I love and, hopefully, girlfriends now. Wink wink. Men just aren’t the priority right now.” Charlie s
hrugged and took another sip of her coffee.
“What about that guy you met at the club? The one you spoke about?” Kay asked.
“I just used him as an example. Didn’t really catch his name…he was gone before I could ask. So even if I wanted to, I’m not sure how I could possibly look for him. It’s fine guys, I’m not really interested anyway. Men are stressful. I’d rather just enjoy what I have.” Charlie knew she sounded like a broken record but it was true. She was happy, so why risk her heart when she didn’t need to?
“If you say so,” Celine conceded.
Charlie sighed. She still remembered how good it had been with mystery man. Her friends had planned a girls’ trip to New York and invited her last minute because she was down about a breakup. They’d told her it was supposed to be a fun, single girls’ vacation and she’d believed them until they’d ditched her at the club to go chase men. She’d been sitting at the bar when this handsome stranger walked up to her with a sexy accent and swagger about him that made her mouth water.
“Hey beautiful? Want to dance?” he’d asked. Charlie had had one too many gin and tonics and he was by far the most attractive man she’d ever seen, so why not? She’d agreed, trying to ignore the frisson of pleasure that had awakened when he clasped her hands in his. The beat was slow and bassy, the reverb vibrating through the dance floor to their heated bodies as they came together to dance. Was what they had been doing really dancing? Charlie blushed at the thought. The way she’d ground her ass against his half-hard cock until he was fully erect, she could feel the throbbing cock through the fabric of his pants. The low light of the club had made her reckless. He’d pushed her back against his chest, his hands dipping into her dress, finding her hard, braless nipples. The way he’d tugged on them, pulling the sensitive buds until she was so wet she was moaning, grinding her hips in a purely sinful seduction. She didn’t care that he was a stranger. Her body knew his.
“Fuck me,” she’d begged.
He didn’t hesitate. He grasped her hand and led her to the back of the club to a secluded spot. As he looked deeply into her eyes, he pushed her against the wall and paused, waiting for her. Charlie, filled with gin and tonic, had no reservations and nodded to him. He pulled her dress up and freed himself with his other hand. Charlie gasped as he guided himself slowly into her.
“Fuck. You’re so tight,” he growled in her ear. That voice, she still heard it in her fantasies.
He slowly began to fuck her, and pressed against the wall as she was, she could do nothing but tilt her hips and moan into his thrusts. His finger found her clit.
“Harder,” she panted. He pushed into her with harder strokes, pulling against her until her back arched into his thrusts.
“Faster!” she screamed, her gaze growing unfocused as the desire mounted.
“Oh yes!” He growled, twisting until his cock hit that sweet bundle of nerves every time he thrust into her. Charlie had moaned her pleasure loudly, twisting and meeting him thrust for thrust until her pussy walls began to clench on him.
“I’m going to cum. I want you to cum with me,” he ordered.
It was not an order she could disobey. She came with a long moan just as he shouted his release. Pleasure hit Charlie so hard that she blacked out for a second. He set her down and hovered over her. They both stared at each other, gasping for breath.
“You good?” he said.
“Ummm…ya…good.” Charlie shook her head and looked down at her hands. She’d just had the best sex of her life and he wanted to know if she was good. She sighed and looked back up to speak but he was gone. She whipped around, trying to find the man who had just shattered her world so, but he was gone. Just gone.
Chapter Two
Summer turned into golden fall and Charlie watched her friends become even closer to her. Of course Celine had moved in with Everett, but since the man had a fabulous house and a seemingly endless supply of ice cream, she couldn’t complain. Asher had just published his book and had been hinting heavily that Kay move in with him. Kay was stubborn but Charlie knew the girl was caving – no woman in their right mind could say no to Asher for very long. Charlie could have girls’ night and unlimited access to all the books, including a free signed copy of Asher’s book. She was content.
She strolled into the kitchen to set the coffee brewing. She hadn’t seen anyone in the main hall and assumed she was the first to arrive. It happened, though not often.
“Finally! We’ve been hanging out here waiting forever,” Celine said as Charlie strolled into the kitchen. She froze and stared at Kay and Celine, eyes wide in shock.
“Is this an ambush? Because for the last time Kay, I haven’t been stealing your doughnuts,” Charlie said exasperatedly. They had been going back and forth because Kay’s doughnuts kept going missing, though Charlie had her suspicions about who the culprit was.
“I know that. It’s Asher, the dastardly thief. I was so ashamed. He’s shameless,” Kay said with an eye roll, though her eyes still twinkled. Charlie chuckled. She knew Kay would figure it out.
“You think we cornered you in the kitchen for some bagel slash doughnut intervention? Where is your imagination?” Celine demanded.
“In the coffee maker,” Charlie returned drily.
“This girl. After all I do for you? You should be ashamed, just deeply ashamed of yourself. We didn’t corner you because of pastry, we cornered you because there’s a hot guy upstairs and since we’re both attached, maybe you could slip him your number, and I dunno, get a date? Some hot forbidden sex? A walk in Central Park?” Celine suggested.
“You guys…” Charlie laughed.
“Yes, yes. You’re not interested in men but hear me out okay? This one is different,” Celine started.
“Yup. He’s Asher’s friend. Asher insists he’s a good guy who’s gone through some rough patches. So he’s not a rich douche like most of the men who show up here. He’s actually pretty attractive and Asher isn’t averse to the idea of setting you guys up. I think it would do you and him some good,” Kay suggested.
“I’m not interested,” Charlie stated firmly.
“You don’t know the guy. You don’t know whether or not you’re interested. He’s just gotten back from England, where he took off to for close to three years after his marriage fell apart. He needed some time to heal but he’s back in town and ready to mingle. He’s basically your dream guy,” Celine cajoled.
“I’m not ready to be some guy’s rebound, from a marriage no less. Are you guys crazy? Why do people in relationships who are happy always want other people to be in relationships?” Charlie asked with a laugh.
“I worry you’ve closed yourself off to the possibility of finding someone new. If you have, there’s a whole other world you’re missing out on. You could just try to meet him and see how it goes. He’s upstairs with Asher now, discussing becoming a patron for the library. Everett and Damien – Damien Swythe, that’s his name – started their tech businesses together. He is loaded, so you could do much worse.” Celine chuckled.
Charlie sighed and gave her friend an annoyed look.
“Money is the least of my concerns,” Charlie said. She wasn’t rolling in dough but she had enough to pay for her rent and for food. The salary from the library wasn’t minimum wage. Far from it.
“Cel is just teasing ya know, but still,” Kay insisted.
“I’m not rebound material, trust me.” Charlie didn’t think she was any type of material, really.
“Who says it’s a rebound? The guy has been in England. How do you know he didn’t have a hot fling with some glamor model?” Celine challenged.
“Did he?” Charlie shot back.
“Maybe. I don’t know, it’s possible,” Celine replied lamely.
“God you’re so bad at this,” Kay said with a chuckle, and Charlie agreed.
“You should still meet him though. This is the first time we’re trying to set you up with someone. Give him a shot and if you still hate the ide
a of him afterward, we’ll back off and never ever bring it up again. We promise,” Kay suggested.
“Sure? I don’t know why you guys insist on this whole thing but I’ll do it if I have your word that if it doesn’t work out, you’ll just accept what I say about being happy alone and leave me to it. I need your promise,” Charlie insisted.
“We promise. Don’t we Cel?” Kay asked gleefully.
“We do.” Celine smiled.
“Just in time too. Asher is coming down,” Kay said.
Charlie was about to ask how she knew when she heard it too, footsteps sounding closer to the kitchen. Asher walked in with a man in tow.
“Ladies, meet Damien Swythe. He’s just in from…” Asher began his introductions but Charlie wasn’t listening. Those long legs and broad shoulders, the curl of his hair, left a bit too long in the middle and shaved on the sides; the cast of his cheekbones, the hint of olive beneath his skin, those rich earthen-hued copper eyes.
Charlie gasped. It couldn’t be.
