Ember (Constant Flame Duet Book 1) Page 36

by Christi Whitson

With her permanently out of the way, Phelps wouldn’t need to wait for her father to be ready to retire. Nate would be so consumed with grief that he would most likely step down voluntarily, giving way to his natural successor, his dearest friend and CFO.

As Phelps watched the familiar street signs of his neighborhood flash past his window, his irritation grew. In retrospect, he realized that he should’ve instructed the hired gun to err on the side of patience and caution, but he’d thought that such a warning would have been superfluous. Anyone who committed murder for a living should know that undue haste was detrimental in the long run.

Then why did the bastard take the shot while the bitch was standing right next to a trained soldier? he fumed. Of all of the incompetent…

Phelps took a breath, giving himself a mental shake as his driver pulled the car onto the bricked driveway of his home. He straightened his spine against the plush leather seat and forced himself to find a renewed sense of purpose. He would have to reexamine his strategy and make some adjustments, but the setback had not diminished his determination.

One way or another, Gardner Components would be his.

  Constant

"Hold on, baby. You are NOT allowed to leave me, Eleanore. Do you understand? Just hold on. You'll be okay..."

Tears streaked over his soot-stained cheeks as he whispered into her ear, unwittingly repeating the very words he'd used to soothe her when they were four years old.

"Stay with me. I'll keep you safe."

Fate brought Owen and Lena together against impossible odds, but darkness looms ahead. When their lives are once again rocked by tragedy, they'll find themselves clinging to the only thing they have left: each other. The world may burn to ash around them, but their love remains Constant.
