The rest of the evening was equally incredible, filled with the love and good wishes of my family and my community, hot dogs and hamburgers and fried chicken.
When Win and I finally saw each other again, our last guest had gone home, Hal had gone upstairs to one of the guest bedrooms, where I insisted she stay rather than at the inn. Though, the band still remained, sitting under the twinkling lights Win had specifically chosen for this night.
They continued to play a soft Sinatra tune until Win whispered something to the piano player before gathering Whiskey and Strike and pulling Bel out of his pocket to set him on his shoulder.
As the tune “For Good,” from one of our favorite Broadway shows, began to play, Win held out his hand to me and smiled, his eyes full of love.
“Dance with me, Dove?”
I went into his arms without hesitation, curling into him and wrapping my arms around his neck and we began to sway. “I have a question, Spy Guy.”
“What’s that, Mini-spy?”
“I only ask this because, well, I’m me, and I wonder about these things.”
“What do you wonder?”
“What if I’d said no? Wouldn’t that have been a disaster when the whole town knew?”
Win’s deep chuckle rumbled against my chest. “All I’ll say is, it doesn’t hurt to have a witch as your future sister-in-law.”
“Huh?”
“She had a vision of you saying yes while we were figuring out how I’d go about proposing. In fact, she said it was one of the clearest visions she’d ever had. Though, now the flashes of aluminum foil in her vision make total sense. Either way, I had a bit of insurance.”
“What Winterbutt said, but we didn’t need it. I knew you’d say yes,” Belfry murmured sleepily, tucking himself into a ball on Win’s shoulder.
“Dah. We tell Zero this,” Arkady agreed.
“They’re right,” I said as we swayed, my eyes half-closed. “There’s never been any doubt in my mind you were the spy for me.”
Win pressed his nose to mine, the scent of his subtly spicy cologne settling around me. “Like you, I never doubted you were the witch for me.”
“I love you, Win.”
“And I you, Dove. Always.”
Whiskey and Strike sandwiched their way between our legs, Bel lightly snored, Arkady hummed from above, and all was right in the world with our little family.
We stayed that way for a long time ,with the music in our ears, the lights glowing all around us and swirls of fake snow floating in gentle swells to the ground.
As we all swayed together, the lyrics of the song Win had requested whispered through the corridors of my mind, making me sigh in gratitude for my countless blessings.
Because I knew you, I have been changed for good…
