How Ya Like Me Now Page 16

by Brendan Halpin

“I don’t know. I was thinking we could get like a vat of Jell-O or something and they could fight it out over me.”

Eddie laughed. “Don’t cheat on Tanya. I’m way too busy to visit you in the hospital.”

Alex smiled. “Yeah, you might be right about that. I guess I’ll have to pick one. Now that is a problem. Oh, jeez, I’m sorry, man, I’m talking about picking between Tanya and Stephanie. I mean, I’m really only joking about that, Tanya’s hot and all, but she kind of terrifies me. And it might be just easier to date somebody you didn’t have to see in school all the time. Seems like that would give me less opportunity to piss her off, which I guess I do to girls without even trying. Maybe that happens to everybody. But in any case, it’s still a good idea. You know, the more I think of it, the more I think about it, the more I think it’s got to be Stephanie. It’s a shame that the Jello-O wrestling isn’t gonna happen, though. But anyway, it’ll do Tanya some good to get rejected, especially after you—”

“Just came from the stairwell, if you know what I mean,” Eddie said, and smiled.

Alex’s mouth fell open. “You? Wait a minute. What? Who? Wait,” and Eddie smiled and started walking toward the bus stop. “No, wait!” Alex said.

The bus pulled up, and Eddie got on, with Alex right behind him, still going, “You have to tell me! We’re family!”

The doors closed behind them, the bus pulled away, and Eddie and Alex were on their way home.
