ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Many thanks to:
Kij Johnson, editor of Nebula Awards Showcase 2014, who generously shared information about the nuts and bolts of putting together this anthology.
Eleanor Wood, literary agent extraordinaire, who handled contracts and payments with aplomb and style.
Lou Anders, who acquired the anthology for Pyr, and his capable successor as editor, Rene Sears, who brought it to completion.
Melissa Raé Shofner, assistant editor, who ferreted out all typos and copyediting issues. Any remaining problems are caused by a malign universe.
And Catherine Roberts-Abel and the rest of the production staff at Pyr, who produced the lovely volume you now hold in your hands.
ABOUT THE EDITOR
Greg Bear is the author of Blood Music, Forge of God, Eon, Darwin’s Radio, and War Dogs, as well as the forthcoming Killing Titan. He sold his first short story in 1967, helped found San Diego Comic-Con shortly thereafter, and has been invited to consult on numerous topics, including space, biotech, and national security. He is married to Astrid Anderson Bear, and they have two children, Erik and Alexandra.
ABOUT THE COVER ARTIST
John Harris’s art looms large over science fiction. Since the 1970s he has painted covers for some of the greats of the genre, including Isaac Asimov, Orson Scott Card, Jack McDevitt, Ben Bova, John Scalzi, and Ann Leckie, among many others. In 1984, NASA invited Harris to watch the launch of the space shuttle Endeavour and commissioned a painting of the launch, which now hangs as part of the Smithsonian Museum collection.
In addition to illustrating writers’ works, Harris has created a series of over seventy pieces envisioning his own created world, a visual archaeology of imagined places and culture. A selection of his paintings was collected in 2014’s The Art of John Harris: Beyond the Horizon. Also in 2014, Harris was nominated for a Hugo Award for Best Artist. In 2015, Harris won the Chesley Award for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.
Harris brings a sense of monumental scale to his future landscapes, but even the weightiest planet or most isolated spaceship invites the viewer in. The vibrant color and impressionistic brushwork of his paintings only emphasize the concrete realism of his imagined worlds.
