  Author Afterword

If you’ve read my first book, Fate’s Fables, then you know the main character, Fate Floyd, fluked into writing a bestselling novel called Magic Brew. This came about after she was given an English assignment, which was to choose any book about gangs in the 1960’s and write a unique spin on a favorite chapter. Being the fantasy geek she is, Fate turned her story into an epic rumble between supernatural gangs. After her teacher entered her work into a contest and she won, a publisher contracted her to expand the idea into a novel. (With a name like Fate, nothing small ever happens to her). The book chosen for this assignment was Sol Yurick’s, The Warriors, which takes place on Independence Day. I’ve always been a fan of this 1979 cult classic film, so it only seemed right to place Magic Brew in New York City on the Fourth of July.

I had planned to write Magic Brew after I finished the Fate’s Journey series, but because some of Fate’s cosplayer fans come along with her in the second book, Fate’s Keep, I needed to flesh out the outline for Magic Brew to ensure I had a firm grasp on the characters her fans are so crazy about. However, once I started developing the story, I couldn’t get the Magic Brew characters to be quiet. They wanted their story written, and they didn’t want to wait. Since there’s no ignoring that many voices in your head, I decided to get it done.

For anyone who’s a fan of Fate Floyd, I’ll let you decide if a seventeen-year-old girl could get inside the head of a nineteen-year-old male, supernatural gang member and be his voice. Most would say no, but then again, I thought The Peculiar by Stefan Bachmann was written by a sixty-year-old English literature professor, C.S. Lewis type of guy. Imagine my surprise when I found out the author was only sixteen years old when he wrote this classic book!

If you’re curious about who Fate Floyd is, I invite you to read Fate Fables, which can be found on my Amazon author page: http://www.amazon.com/T.-Rae-Mitchell/e/B001HOH510

I hope you enjoyed Magic Brew. I have to say, I really loved exploring Edge’s world and his relationship with his gang. The recurring subjects of family, loyalty and independence are not unlike the challenges we all face from time to time. Thankfully, we don’t have to worry about being trapped in a lava lamp on top of it all.

As an author, I welcome feedback and encourage my readers to tell me what they liked or didn’t like. I’d especially love to hear whether you’d like to see a sequel to Magic Brew. This was meant to be a stand-alone book, but like any story, there are no real endings.

Thank you for reading my book and spending time with my characters.

When I first began writing, I set out to create a magical adventure starring my eleven-year-old son, Tyler. I thought it would be fun for him to see himself in a book and it became a gift I really wanted to give him. It was supposed to be a picture book with a simple story, but I quickly found I couldn’t write a short story. I discovered I liked world building too much to keep it to a few pages. So I decided to expand my son’s adventure into a novel. Unfortunately, that book never came to be, because I still had a lot to learn about the art of storytelling. Ten years went by as I practiced my craft, and out of that came Fate’s Fables. But I still wanted to keep my promise, even though my son wasn’t holding me to it.

So my first big thank you goes to my son, Tyler, who inspired Edge’s most redeeming qualities–that of family loyalty, courage, integrity and someone you can c
ount on through thick and thin. Without your feedback as I worked on gang names, all the different supernatural powers and most of all, Edge’s core motivations, this story wouldn’t be nearly as cool as it is. And thanks for also becoming the face of Edge and lending your amazing talent as an actor to my book trailer. Your patience under hours of make-up and many reshoots–all with so much enthusiasm–further proved your unwavering support.

Another huge thank you to my husband, Tony, whose encouragement always keeps me going. Your valuable feedback helped me keep Edge’s voice male, gritty and real. As always, thank you for designing another stunning book cover. And I’m so grateful for all the time you put into shooting and editing my kickass book trailer.

Of course, the book trailer wouldn’t have been possible without my secret gang: Kevin Wong, Noboru Pestana, Kevin Chiang and actor extraordinaire, Shea Norman, who played Maddox. A big thank you for coming out to run around with knives in the dark.

Special thanks to Nora Snowdon, my brilliant editor and talented author, for finding the plot holes nobody else saw, digging deep into each character’s motivations when they ran off course, and cutting the fat to keep the story lean and mean. And thanks to Donna Barker, my main beta reader and fellow writer, for daring to wade into the first draft of the manuscript and come back with some very helpful feedback.

  About The Author

Bestselling author T. Rae Mitchell is an incurable fantasy junkie who spent much of her youth dreaming up worlds and bringing characters to life. While most kids outgrow such things, T. Rae didn’t and she sometimes took playing make-believe a bit far. Like the time a wizard hid a bottle of dragon beans in the back yard and left her son convinced he could grow his own dragons. Needless to say, the beans failed to produce and disappointments were had. That’s when T. Rae decided to funnel her crazy imagination into writing. She has since begun her young adult series, Fate’s Fables, Book One of Fate’s Journey, which can be found on numerous Amazon Top 100 Best Seller lists, such as Coming of Age Fantasy and Fairy Tales & Folklore.
