2.) What did you think of the characters in the book? Nia’s friendships with Crystal and Cameron? Were you surprised that Cameron had a crush on Nia, instead of Crystal? And now that Nia knows, do you think she’ll give him a chance to be more than friends?
3.) Nia seemed to have a very close relationship with her father, Julian. Did it remind you of your relationship with your own father? What type of relationship do you have with your own father? If you don’t have one, do you wish you did? If not, why?
4.) At a young age, Nia suffered several major losses in her life. How do you think she handled losing the only man she’d ever known as her father? Then learning that she’d been adopted? Do you think her father was wrong for not telling her long before he died? If so, why? Have you ever experienced finding out that your father wasn’t your real father? If so, how did you handle it?
5.) Why do you think Nia’s aunt treated her the way she did? Do you think she ever planned to allow Nia to live with her in the first place? If not, why do you think she misled her?
6.) What did you think about Omar coming into Nia’s life? Was she wrong for demanding a paternity test before going to New Jersey with him? Do you think Omar really wanted to be a parent?
7.) What did you think of Sha’Quita? Why do you think she was so mean and antagonistic toward Nia? Why do you think she was so promiscuous? What did you think of her relationship with her mother, Keyonna? They smoke and drink and fight like girls on the streets. Do you know of anyone who has a similar relationship to the one Sha’Quita had with her mother?
8.) At the end of the book, Nia refers to Shawn as a lifeline. Do you think if she had stayed in New Jersey that the two of them might have become involved? What did you think of him? Do you think Nia was right in her assessment of him; that he was a lot like Omar?
9.) How do you think Nia’s experience being in New Jersey affected her? Do you think she and Omar will ever have a relationship now that she’s back in California? Do you think he should have tried to stop her from leaving? Or did he do the right thing by letting her go?
