Angry Arrow Page 13

by N. C. Lewis

"What about Dan Sweet?" Millie asked.

Deputy Dingsplat looked around the café and lowered his voice. "Dan's not saying much, other than pleading ignorance and blaming it all on Charlotte. Dan claims Charlotte stalked him, even showing up at the college. He claims Sophia Flores is his current girlfriend, and that he has something on Professor Bingham, but he hasn’t said what, yet."

  "That's a lot of claims," I said.

"Neither of which the sheriff's department has been able to verify," added Deputy Dingsplat.

We fell silent for several minutes.

"Has a trial date been set?" I asked.

Deputy Dingsplat took a sip from his cup. "Not yet. I've no idea what the judge will eventually decide, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if they both spend the rest of their lives in prison."

I felt a tinge of sadness in my heart. For Andy Arrow, for Charlotte, and even for Dan Sweet. Then I looked around at the friendly faces, breathed in the delicious scent of coffee and yeasty bread rolls, and knew Medlin Creek was home. I sipped my Creek Jolt and let out a contented sigh.

The barista grabbed his tea towel and absentmindedly wiped the table. "All I know," he said, as his lopsided eyes flashed with satisfaction, "is that the mystery of the angry arrow has been solved. Now the good people of Medlin Creek can go back to living a quiet Hill Country life."
