“You came around that day, sniffing around to see if I was going to take any action against your precious Dr Connor.”
“That’s not what happened. I came because I wanted to see how you were. I wanted to—"
“You wanted to see the devastation you’d caused, you mean.” Drew’s voice was ragged and instinctively, Harriet reached out toward him but he pushed away from her and turned for the door.
“If I ever see you again, Dr Quinn, I’ll—" He shook his head. “Thank you for your help in apprehending Robert Burton. But Yorkshire CID no longer requires your services.”
With that, he tugged the door open and disappeared out into the hall, leaving Harriet to stare after him. She didn’t blame him in the least. She’d lied to him; withholding the truth was as good as a lie and his reaction was justified.
“Well, he’s pleasant,” Jonathan said as he reached out to touch her shoulder.
Harriet shrugged free of him.
“Why are you here, Jonathan?”
He stared at her in mock surprise before his gaze narrowed. “I was hoping your little scare would have brought you to your senses, but I can see now that my hope was misguided.”
Harriet pinched her fingers against the bridge of her nose and shook her head. “Haven’t you done enough damage?”
“Poor, little, Harriet. You’ve chased everyone away now... I hope you’re happy.” He pulled open the door and left, the sound of his expensive shoes squeaked on the floor as he stalked down the hall.
With a sigh, Harriet dropped back onto the bed.
He wasn’t wrong. But she had made a mistake and now she was paying the price for it.
