She made her way to his door and then gently turned the handle, holding her breath as the door creaked open. She knew Bonnie and their new baby were in England. Kealana hadn’t considered the consequences of telling her when they had spoken two days ago. She gambled on the fact that Alex would be sleeping alone. She didn’t think he would cheat on Bonnie. After sleeping next to Alex for years, she knew that he wouldn’t register the sound of her entering his room like this.
She walked into the room and breathed a sigh of relief – there was only one person in the bed and she could tell by the shape it was Alex. She looked for the tall glass of water on his bedside table, the one she was certain would be there. Old habits were hard to change. The white light from the skyscrapers outside lit up his face and body. He looked so peaceful in sleep.
She squeezed the vial tightly in her gloved hand. This was what she had planned, what she wanted to do. But now, looking at Alex, asleep and vulnerable, she wondered whether poisoning him would really help. Even with the wig and the unregistered key card, Alex’s death would be traced to her. And killing him would make her no better than him. Did she really want to give up the rest of her life for him? She had already lost years trapped in a false marriage.
She had to look forward now, not back. She was in Hong Kong, a place she thought she would never return to. She had been to the places that had haunted her. She had overcome her fears. Even now, standing in her old apartment, she expected to feel anger, but she didn’t. She felt alive. And Ben had given her his number and she actually wanted to call him. She hadn’t felt that way about someone since… she couldn’t even remember. That was a sign, wasn’t it? A sign that her future was in front of her. It was her chance to start again, not spend the rest of her life in a prison cell repenting for what she had done. Alex had taken too much from her already. She took one last look at Alex, pocketed the vial, and made her way out of the room.
Outside, she pulled her wig off and quickly walked away from the apartment building. She didn’t look back.
