Chapter 1
► Ella ◄
I had been kidnapped. Fucking kidnapped. Still I couldn’t believe what had happened. One moment I’d been walking on the streets of Rome, and suddenly I’d been grabbed. Something was pressed onto my face and my body stopped fighting, went absolutely slack. From then on, my memories were a haze, everything had gone so fast; they had pushed me and my sister into a van, had brought us to the next spaceship port, and thrown us into the belly of a ship.
My sister. The thought popped into my head again. I was fairly sure that the spaceship had already lifted. How much time had passed? Where was Alessia? Frantically I looked around but it was totally dark. “Sia?” I whisper-shouted. Fuck, I was scared, my whole body shook, my heart hammered inside my chest and I didn’t dare to raise my voice. “Sia?” Adrenaline rushed through my veins; on the one hand it helped cleansing my system of whatever drug they had given me, on the other hand it cleared my mind enough to let the panic creep in.
Who were these men? Why had they taken us? Sia and I were ordinary, we weren’t rich or had an important family, in fact we only had one another. So the only reason anybody could have stolen us from the street was…slavery. Only a few weeks ago I had read an article that human trafficking had reached its peak. By now it was more lucrative than trading weapons or drugs because apparently human women were on high demand in the whole galaxy. Since mankind had made first contact to another species in 2516, it had learned about many more planets and various alien peoples. Some were similar to humans…others weren’t, and I didn’t even want to think about if we were going to be servants, sex slaves, or a meal for some beast.
Momentarily I wasn’t even sure which option I preferred.
“Sia?” I called again and this time a heard a moan. Had they hurt her? Sharply I inhaled as I tried to scramble towards the familiar voice, but I realized that my wrists and ankles were tied. Determined, I crawled into the direction of the sound which I had heard before. Soon I felt another body next to mine. “Sia?”
“Ella?” she whispered back. The lump in my throat lessened because at least my sister was okay. “Where are we?”
“On a ship.” My eyes slowly accustomed to the dark, still I could only see gray shapes. We were definitely in the cargo bay. And we were not alone. Now that I wasn’t as concentrated anymore on finding my sister and checking if she was okay, I started to notice the whispers, the sound of crying and breathing. While looking around I counted at least thirty other women, one of them seemed so tiny, I wondered if she was even eighteen, yet.
What we all had in common: the fearful and confused expressions on our faces. I bet every single one of those other women had been grabbed like Sia and me.
“We are on a ship? What ship?” Sia murmured confused. Shortly after, when she moved her arms and realized that they were bound, she cried out. “Ella?” Her tone was shrill but I couldn’t do more than awkwardly pat her shoulder with both of my hands in order to soothe her.
“I think they are slavers,” I whispered, even though I didn’t want to scare her more. Wasn’t it my job as her older sister to protect her? Well, I pretty much fucked that up, didn’t I? “But we are going to get through this.” With more conviction than I felt, I pushed the words out. My fingers shook, my heart galloped as fast as a racing horse but Sia couldn’t see me well in the dark and hopefully wouldn’t notice.
“Slavers!” she echoed; the horror was obvious in her voice.
“I know you are scared, but we need to be strong, okay? We can get through this.” This time I meant what I said. Gritting my teeth, I promised myself to flee from wherever I might end up so that I would be able to search for and free Sia. Whatever it took, I was going to get us home.

I couldn’t say that I liked it very much or that I had ever anticipated to one day spend money on getting a female shipped to my kingdom. Apparently, planet Earth had matchmaking agencies. Eartheners could apply to such agencies if they were interested in finding a match on another planet. Alien kink it was called, if I wasn’t mistaken. I wondered who the fuck—apart from myself—was desperate enough to pay the ridiculous fees of these agencies.
What choice did I have? As King of Krotan it was my duty to protect my people. Together we had gone through, survived, and achieved so much. When the Rakes had come to wage war against us to take our planet for themselves, we had stood together. In battle we’d been equal opponents, but the Rakes were ruthless, cunning creatures. Everybody feared them because they had besieged and plundered one planet after another for ages. We Krotans were the first ones to actually drive them off without having to make some horrible deal with them and accept them as our masters.
Nonetheless, we faced extinction. Why? The Rakes had pe
rfected their tactics long ago. At first they waged war, when they’d gotten access to the planet’s food or water supply, they poisoned it. It wasn’t detectable; at least we hadn’t been able to recognize that anything was wrong with our water…until the females got sick and one after another had died. Even the children.
Only thinking about it, called back the old wrath. Grinding my teeth, I balled my hands into fists. There were only three generations left, one was already too old to reproduce, and if I didn’t find compatible females for the remaining Krotans, then this was it. We had done the impossible—defeated the Rakes—only to die out.
Of course I couldn’t let that happen. I owed it to my people to find a way for us to live on. Within the halls of my palace, my advisors and I had spent hours discussing what to do. Eventually our scientists had been able to identify what the Rakes had put into our water and found a way to cleanse it. However, there wasn’t one single female left on Krotan, at least none had been found.
We had been trading with other planets for years; now, after the war, the first trading ships landed on our home planet again. When I saw the numerous species on the spaceship airport, I wondered if there was a species out there compatible to ours. One of the traders told my advisors about Earth’s matchmaking agencies, and after extensive research, our scientists concluded that it might just be possible for a human and a Krotan to breed.
The possibilities… Impatiently I stared at the landing strip. She was supposed to land in one of the spaceships within the hour. I didn’t know much about her, the agency had sent me one photo and a questionnaire about her character, which she had to fill out when applying to their matchmaking services. When being honest with myself, I wasn’t very interested in her as a person, the questionnaire had been boring to read. What she liked to do? Doing what made her man happy. In contrary to her submissive answers, Krotan females had been as strong-willed as the males. We were a proud people; we strove for physical fitness and mental strength.
In comparison, the human female seemed a little dull. On top of that, Eartheners didn’t possess any natural weapons. While my silver skin was hard, I had read that hers would be soft and easily bruised. My fingertips ended in sharp claws, always ready to protect myself and others; whereas the poisonous spikes on my back only straightened whenever I was threatened. Humans had neither; they were helpless.
That was the reason why my advisors had pressed I should be the first one to welcome a human female in my home. My subjects would see them as weak, but if the strongest of them—their king—respected one, they would lose their skepticism and follow my example.
While waiting for the ship to land, I could practically feel the weight of my people’s future on my shoulders. No matter my personal feelings or opinion, I had to make this work with her. At least I wouldn’t have to woo her or anything, she’d come here because she wanted to find a partner and because she apparently preferred Krotans to humans. Well, of course—we were stronger and much better suited for protecting our loved ones.
“Remember that time is an issue, King Krian,” one of my advisors reminded me.
Snarling, I nodded. As if I could forget that every day counted. Our last generation of Krotan children grew older every day. If we didn’t find a compatible race, they would be the last Krotans ever to live.
When the spaceship of the matchmaking agency finally landed, I immediately started to walk towards it. Two human men welcomed me, both wore suits, which I had learned were formal clothes on Earth. “We are very happy to introduce you to your future bride, King Krian of Krotan,” one of them said. When he smiled, the spikes on my back tingled. Furrowing my brows, I only nodded. I had no patience for pleasantries.
“Miss Ella Bellini.” The man gestured to the side, only then did I notice the slim figure sitting on a bench. “You have to excuse her, our landing was a little rough and she got space sick.” Again the man smiled and again my spikes tingled but I was too distracted to really think about it.
“Where is her luggage?” The fees had already been paid in advance, now I wanted to take Ella back to my palace as soon as possible. While I observed her closely, she didn’t even look up. She must be really sick, her eyes even seemed glassy. Weak, I thought. Displeased, I ground my teeth. Humans didn’t even have fangs!
“Miss Bellini’s luggage got misplaced.” Honest regret showed on the human’s face, why did I feel suspicious of him then? I couldn’t shake the emotion. Two of my warriors had followed me to the agency’s ship, at my sign they helped the human female to stand and guided her out of the ship. While I followed them, my advisors stayed to talk with the employees of the matchmaking agency. Surely they wanted to know how many Eartheners were interested in Krotans and how fast they would get here, if Ella’s and my breeding turned out to be successful.
Moments later we sat in my vehicle, even though the royal guard didn’t like it, I drove myself. Of course my warriors followed suit in vehicles of their own. The street back to the palace was completely empty, so I switched to autopilot and turned to the female on the passenger’s seat. “I’m Krian, as you must know,” I told her, but she showed absolutely no reaction. “Are you still feeling sick?”
When she didn’t even twitch, I reached out with my hand and took her chin between my fingers. She felt ridiculously soft and vulnerable beneath my touch. Suddenly she turned her head, long dark hair strands fell to the side, so that I could see her face fully for the first time. The photo hadn’t done her justice. She was beautiful in a way, her cheeks and lips were full, her nose was a little crooked, her lashes were long, and her eyes of a rich brown color. Also they were widened. When I inhaled, I tasted a hint of fear.
Perhaps she was nervous? Even though she had chosen to be here, she was space sick and thinking about coming to another planet was something different than actually doing it. I would give her the day to get accustomed to her new situation.
Tentatively I brushed my fingers from her chin over her right cheek. I would need time to get used to the feeling of her, above all I would have to be careful not to accidentally hurt her. “Krotans are much stronger than humans but I’ll be careful, I promise.”
Her brows drew together. Did she even understand what I was saying? When I touched her hair for the first time, I was astonished at the silk-like feeling. Brushing it aside, I discovered a little scar at her temple and wondered what might have happened to her. Was that the reason why she’d left Earth? I couldn’t imagine ever wanting to leave Krotan.
“What happened here?” I asked touching the scar with one of my claws. Audibly she inhaled and shrank back into her seat. Was she that easily scared? Weak. With a sigh I let my hand sink from her face, instead I busied myself with my com. “I think she needs a translator,” I said to one of my advisors.
“She doesn’t speak Krotan?” The voice sounded as confused as I felt. Had the agency lied to us or had Ella lied to the agency?
“I don’t think so.”
“It doesn’t matter.” In the background I heard someone chuckle. Yeah, we didn’t need to talk only to fuck, I supposed.
Chapter 2
► Ella ◄
I was on Krotan? Shit, I had absolutely no chance! After all, the Krotans were the only species which had been attacked by the Rakes and had actually fought them off. They were warriors through and through. After the war they had shut themselves off from the rest of the galaxy. They traded with other planets but didn’t let any foreigners leave the spaceship ports. What if their king now was a dictator? I had absolutely no information about the political situation on Krotan. The fact that the slavers had landed on an official airstrip frightened me, though. When they openly traded with slavers, it couldn’t be good.
Frightened, I tried to concentrate on the landscape, which flew by the window of the vehicle, however, before the landing they had drugged me again and I couldn’t concentrate. I felt like being underwater, not even my fear really reached me. At least the driver had stopped touching me. A
utomatically I glanced into his direction. He was enormously tall, his shoulders wide, the skin silver and his eyes almost metallic. You couldn’t miss how alien he was…well, on Krotan I was the alien, right? Whenever he had spoken to me, I had been able to see his sharp fangs behind his lips. When I dipped my gaze to his hands on the steering wheel, I noticed his claws and remembered how he had slightly scratched my chin.
I should be panicking but I could hardly feel anything. The drug numbed and weakened me, so I had difficulty standing or even sitting upright. My hands held on to the seat, while my head dropped against the window. When I felt eyes on me, I glanced sideways again. His lips were moving but I just couldn’t understand his language. Was that a worried look? This couldn’t be true, he must be ruthless, when he was buying slaves. But if he was the driver, he probably was only doing his job.
Would a driver wear such expensive clothes? On the other hand, this was Krotan fashion, so I could be mistaken. Shaking my head, I closed my eyes. It was tiring to speculate. For the time being, I was useless; all I could do was wait for the drug to wear off, then I could worry about finding a way to flee.
After a while, a big, black mountain came into view. We drove toward it, until I realized that a palace and a whole town had been carved into the stone. It was eerily beautiful, very fitting for a warrior nation. It didn’t take long for us to reach a giant gate. The guards next to it let us through immediately, hence I stared at the Krotan in the driver’s seat. So he was someone of importance—some rich fucker who had bought himself a little human plaything? Gritting my teeth, I realized that the drug slowly left my system. At least I could feel a shimmer of anger again.
Still, when he stopped and exited the vehicle, only to circle it and open the door for me, I couldn’t stand on my own damn feet. When I tried, my knees buckled, so I almost fell on my face. The giant silver man grabbed me, though, and lifted me into his arms. In consequence my face was pressed into his chest and I breathed in his dusky, male scent. It was delicious—confusing.
