PocketPC Man: Repair resource for your Pocket PC
PocketPC Man (http://www.pocketpcman.com/) offers screen repair manuals for a variety of Pocket PCs. The manuals contain instructions for disassembly, screen/battery replacement, and more. The instructions seem straightforward and there are lots of pictures to guide you through the process. Unfortunately, the Web site does not sell parts, but they do include tips on finding parts. Note that repairing your own screen will invalidate your Pocket PC’s warranty.

PocketPCmag.com: Where we’re heading
Hal Goldstein Executive
Editor/Publisher of Pocket PC magazine

Over the years at Pocket PC magazine we have debated, brainstormed, and then defined what PocketPCmag.com should be. Looking back, it is apparent that we created a site that we ourselves needed for fast research. At the same time, we believe that you, too, will find it an excellent starting place for information and answers about Windows Mobile devices.
Our current site
We created a site with the following features:
Searchable archives of the magazine’s content.
An encyclopedia (database) of known Windows Mobile software and accessories.
An award system to identify the best products in the database.
A feature-by-feature comparison of Windows Mobile devices.
An up-to-date listing and classification of the best Windows Mobile sites.
Mobile (Pocket PC) access to the site (limited).
A support forum.
A place to subscribe, renew, and receive customer service.
A place for vendors to advertise.
Weekly e-mail newsletters with the latest information on newly introduced products, games, and Web sites.
Major advances in 2003
Last year we completely redesigned the look of the site to allow for quick and transparent access to its many features. Last year’s other main addition, the new support and discussion forums, was an instant success. Users access these forums to troubleshoot problems and to share experiences.
If you have not been to the forums yet, you can access the main page at http://www.PocketPCmag.com/forum. Then, simply click on “Active Topics” at the top of the page and read through the threads for the previous week. It’s a free Pocket PC education. No matter what your level of sophistication, I guarantee you’ll learn something. Here is just a little of what appeared over the course of one week (a slow week during the holidays at that):
Create your own mobile web site: http://www.PocketPCmag.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=4689

What’s next?
We have also been transforming PocketPCmag.com’s internals. Pages on the site are no longer stored as static HTML, but as fields in a database. That means, for example, that this article might be associated with such fields as “Issue Date,” “Columns,” “Web Sites,” “Hal Goldstein,” “Beginners,” “Forums,” etc. Once we’ve completed this ongoing project, our archives and other content will be searchable by such categories as “Author,” “Games,” “Tips,” “Handheld PCs”, “Enterprise,” “Case Studies,” “Reviews,” “ActiveSync,” and so forth.
In addition, we will be using database technology to keep our online comparison of Pocket PCs and SmartPhones, as well as our Encyclopedia of Software and Accessories, up to date. Using a database back end, the updated At-A-Glance information that appears in each issue will appear on our Web site first.
The product listings in the Encyclopedia of Software and Accessories are already stored in a database. However, we will soon let vendors interact with it, which will help us keep it current. This will save lots of time and make for a more accurate and complete Encyclopedia.
Different “views” of PocketPCmag.com
Storing all our information in a database means that we will be able to create versions of the site focused on a particular device or group of devices. For example, we will likely create a “view” of the site that is focused only on Smartphones. It will contain the same type of information—article archives, tips, a product Encyclopedia, and even discussion forums—but it will relate only to Windows Mobile Smartphones.
Members only
Publishers such as Time-Warner have begun limiting full access to such magazine sites as Time and People to subscribers and newsstand buyers. We will likely continue to make current PocketPCmag.com features available for free. But we will be looking for ways to provide our subscribers and newsstand customers with extra value.
The first thing we will likely do is to provide paying customers with access to all published content immediately. Currently, we wait for three to four months after an issue is in our reader’s hands before posting it on the Web site.
Secondly, we will likely implement views of the site by subject (games, tips, reviews, Handheld PCs, freeware, troubleshooting, accessories, etc.). These custom views would be available only to our subscribers and newsstand buyers. Adding search capability to our complete archives and being able to access content by subject should help subscribers and newsstand customers find the information they need about their Windows Mobile device more easily. Finally, we may let our magazine readers download individual online articles in MS Reader format, so they can be read later on the Pocket PC.
Special reports
Finally, we also plan to post special, low-cost, how-to reports; most of them in step-by-step format. We’ll make these available in PDF or MS Reader format (or possibly Flash) for purchase. Reports might range from “How to watch your video DVDs on your Pocket PC” to “How to choose the Pocket PC that’s best for you.” If you have suggestions about topics for these reports or anything else you would like to see at PocketPCmag.com, please e-mail me.
Pocket PC User Groups
If you are interested in participating in a Pocket PC user group, e-mail the contact in your area, listed below. These individuals are user group contacts only and cannot provide technical support for your Pocket PC.
If you are starting a Pocket or Handheld PC user group, or would like to have an existing one listed here, please e-mail: [email protected]. Include the information in the format you see below. If your group has a Web site, include that as well.
