Pretending to be Rich Page 25

by Parker, Weston

“Oh, he’s beautiful,” she exclaimed in a loud whisper. She turned to look at Rand and made a pouty face. “I want another one.”

Rand groaned and looked at his friend. “And this is why I didn’t want to come back. I knew she’d take one look at that baby and want one.”

“It’s about time you had another,” Cade said with a grin.

Rand smiled. “Maybe so. I have to keep up with Adrian and Bella. They have two. I must have three.”

“Are you guys going to be staying in Crete for a while?” I asked Nicole.

She shook her head. “We’re here for a week to check on the house and visit, but we’re going back—for now.”

Cade perked up. “For now? You’re coming home?”

Rand shrugged. “Maybe. For now, we’re settled in America. I’d like to stay a bit longer.”

Cade nodded, and I could see that didn’t make him happy, but he was a supportive friend. He’d filled me in on the heartache his friend had endured, as well as Nicole.

“You can hold him,” I said to Nicole.

Her face lit up. “Can I really? I promise I won’t breathe on him, and I’m totally healthy.”

  I smiled. “It’s fine.”

They visited a little longer before leaving with the promise to come and see our new house. I liked Nicole. She was very sweet, and I thought we could be friends one day—if we were on the same continent.

Shortly after Rand and Nicole left, there was another knock on the door.

I laughed when a massive bouquet of balloons and flowers appeared to float through the door, along with a teddy bear that was nearly as big as Cade. I didn’t even have to ask who was under all the helium.

  “Hi, Maceo,” I greeted.

“My god, man, did you leave any balloons for the other people?” Cade asked, taking the massive bouquet and putting it in the corner of the room. It ate up the entire space.

“I’m a very proud honorary uncle, and I wanted to start the spoiling early. They can go find balloons somewhere else.” He shoved the bear at Cade and homed in on the sleeping baby. “Can I touch him?”

“You can hold him,” I offered.

He looked at me as if I had asked him to hold a venomous snake. “No! I can’t do that.”

I laughed. “All right, all right.”

He spoke softly in Greek, telling Lorenzo how loved he was and that he could count on his Uncle Maceo for anything. I watched with adoration.

Maceo had become like a brother to me and Cade. If it hadn’t been for him, Cade and I may have never managed to get together. I owed him my happiness. I only hoped I could help him find the same happiness.

He often talked about his late fiancée with such profound sadness, it hurt my soul to think of him hurting. I tried setting him up with Lola, but that had been unsuccessful. They got along well enough, but there was no spark.

I was going to keep looking for him.

Once our visitors had ceased, and it was just me, Cade, and our baby, I let myself relax. “I’m so happy,” I said, sighing against his chest.

“Me too,” Cade whispered. “Me too.”

I closed my eyes and let myself dream of our future together, right up to the point where our house was filled with grandkids running and playing.
