Daze of Reality

John fell to the floor as tears flooded his eyes. He began to scream and cry out for Kaden and Kaitlin as he spilt his drink onto the carpeted floor. Choking on his hysteria, his eyes gave out as the shadowed figures ran quickly into the darkened room.

When John groggily awoke, he saw Kellar kneeling over him, tears in her eyes. He blinked slowly in the dim light of the room, and watched as Kellar gave him a faint smile.

“John, honey you’re awake. You scared me there for a minute,” Kellar whispered to him. She knew John had suffered from blackouts before, but it had been a long time since he had. She held his hand tightly, as if he was falling away from her. Oh God, this was almost too much for her to bear, seeing him like this. She knew though that she had to be strong for him, comfort his sadness, and help guide him through his perceived death of himself and the world around him.

Kellar glanced over to see Christopher now huddled in the corner holding his knees to his chest, staring intently at his father. She knew Chris’ eyes had burned with sadness for his dad as well. He was so young, dealing with so much hurt, yet his focus had remained on watching over his father. Kellar’s sadness grew as she recalled Chris begging his father not to leave him, not to chase a certain sentence that John wanted adamantly to pursue, taking his kids back. John had just wanted his children back, and his wife to come home to him. It didn’t happen, and it seemed now that it wouldn’t happen.

John looked up at Kellar, now a bit more aware, but his eyes were empty and lost. He tried to sit up a bit, but didn’t seem to have the strength. Kellar pulled him into her arms and held him close to her. She wanted to make all his pain go away, she wanted to protect him. John turned slightly, and lay on Kellar’s chest. His eyes blurring once more, he latched onto her like a small child in need of love and reassurance.

“Sleep John, I’m right here with you, you’re safe,” Kellar gently spoke, as Christopher covered them both with a warm blanket, before heading to his room to cry his own tears once more.

Kellar nursed John back to health the best that she could over the next few weeks. She had been his rock, his port of solace. She seemed to be holding both John and Christopher together, though it seemed a struggle often to keep their heads above water. John’s six month suspension still had a ways to go before it reached its conclusion, and keeping his mind off his miseries proved harder without the constant distraction of work. Dave spent many hours in John’s company trying to release him of at least some of his pain, and as James’ recovery increased, he and Alex tried to spend more and more time at John’s side as well. Everyone tried their best to bring John out of his deep depressive state, though it was a phone call that finally gave John something to bury himself into.

He received a phone call from Derek for an overseas assignment, and John found himself drawn into the idea of getting away from everything and everyone. He told them all that he just needed to get away and be alone for a while. And without Kellar’s blessing, John hesitantly left his port and headed into unfamiliar, uncharted waters.
