  Eden

My boss scares the crap out of me.

I bet everyone thinks their boss is scary, but seriously, my boss is one of the most terrifying men I’ve ever met. It’s not that he’s loud or that he even punishes people. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him get angry.

It’s that quiet sense of disapproval though, it just rolls off him in waves. When you screw up, he doesn’t scream, he just…

Looks at you. With those gorgeous cool ice blue eyes and that handsome face. It’s enough to drive me absolutely insane.

Finn scares the crap out of me, but he’s fair. He doesn’t give me the look when something is out of my control. He doesn’t blame, doesn’t take bad moods out on me, doesn’t do all the things you expect from a nightmare boss. And yet he’s still a nightmare boss.

Because his standards are exacting. And since I’m his personal assistant, all of those standards apply to me at all times.

I’ve been working for him for six months now and I think I’m ready to go crazy.

But I don’t have time for that, unfortunately. I sit in the back of a small conference room tucked in the middle of a huge hotel with my boss and two other men. One is speaking Polish and the other is translating.

“Mr. Kryzwonos, he says the deal… would be acceptable.”

Finn quirks an eyebrow and glances at me. I feel my blood run cold. “Acceptable?” he says slowly.

The two Polish men have a quick conversation. “Yes. He is not, ah, excited about it. But he says it would be acceptable.”

Finn gives both men the look and I swear they both shrivel back a little bit.

“Gentlemen, I’m not here to play games. My company is prepared to bring a sizable portion of its business to your country, and if you’re willing to invest, we’d be happy to have you on board as a partner. However, if this is simply acceptable to you, perhaps I can find someone with a little more… enthusiasm.”

I nearly groan. Finn is willing to throw away a multimillion-dollar deal because his investor isn’t showing enough excitement.

But that’s the sort of man Finn is. He doesn’t do things halfway, doesn’t play games. He says what he means and he takes what he needs.

That’s why he’s the founder and CEO of one of the largest 5G cellular installation companies in the whole world. He’s single-handedly building the infrastructure that’ll bring us into the future.

Both men look nervous. The interpreter is younger, maybe a couple years older than me, with pale skin and jet-black hair. He glances at the other man, the CEO of their investment firm, a man in his fifties, at least twenty years older than Finn. He looks like he wants to get sick.

“No, no,” the CEO says, then adds something in Polish.

“He says he’s very excited for this opportunity. He’s beyond excited. He’s…” The young interpreter glances at me.

“Ecstatic?” I offer, almost feeling bad for him.

He latches onto the word. “Ecstatic, yes, yes, ecstatic.”

The CEO man is hiding, his eyes wide, trying to force a smile on his face.

Finn leans back and studies them. He doesn’t look in my direction, although I know he won’t like that I spoke up.

“Okay then,” he says finally, and extends his hand.

The older CEO looks so relieved when they shake. They exchange some more pleasantries, shake hands again, and promise to get together for dinner before we have to leave Warsaw.

When the meeting is over, I follow Finn back out into the hall. We walk together in silence back toward the lobby. I’m practically itching for him to say something but he doesn’t speak a word until we walk into the spacious open front room. People mill around, checking in, sitting in chairs, and hanging out near the bar that’s tucked against one wall.

It’s a nice hotel, very modern and clean, about exactly what I’d expect from a new high-end European hotel. I can’t wait to get the heck out of here.

I’m not a big traveler. That wasn’t supposed to be a big part of this job, and so far it actually hasn’t. This is our first trip together, although he did mention there might be more as Alternative Wireless expanding internationally.

Finn stops and turns to me. “Ecstatic?” he asks, a little smile on his lips.

I sigh, feeling some of the tension drain away. “Sorry. First word I could think of.”

“Well, that interpreter seemed to like it.” He appraises me, mouth a thin line now. “What did you think of that?”

I blink. “You want my opinion?”

I don’t even know what to say. He never asks for my opinion. I’m like expensive furniture to him.

“Yes,” he says. “You were in the room, weren’t you?”

  “I, uh, they seemed…”

“If you say ecstatic, I swear, you’re fired.”

  I grin at him. “Happy.”

He rolls his eyes. “Seriously, Eden.”

“I think they seemed intimidated by you,” I say honestly. “I think that means they’re serious. And besides, they agreed to the terms.”

He nods slowly. “True. Although nothing is finished until the contracts are signed.”

“Still, I doubt they’ll back out. Where else would they go?”

  “The Chinese are cheaper.”

“And I’m sure they have monitoring software baked in.” I cock my head, not sure why he wants to hear his own arguments parroted back to him. I’ve never seen Finn show a moment of weakness like this before.

“You’re right,” he says. “We should celebrate.”

“Cele…brate?” I stare at him like he just grew a second head.

“Yes, you know, with drinks. That’s what people do after big deals, right?”

“I have no idea, I’ve never closed one.”

That gets another little smile. “Come on.”

He leads me over to the bar and I follow him like I’m floating on clouds.

Finn Kelly is thirty-three and maybe one of the richest men in the world. Alternative Wireless is his second business venture and even more successful than his first, which he sold for some absurdly high price. He’s intense, demanding, and on top of all that, absolutely gorgeous.

His dark hair is cut short and pushed back almost casually. His eyes are ice blue, almost startling. There’s a perpetual shadow along his cheeks and chin that somehow makes him look rugged. His body is fit and lean, muscular where it matters, and I’d know because I see him working out in his office sometimes. He dates models, heiresses, royalty. He’s not the kind of man to look at me twice.

And yet now I have his full attention as
we sit down at the bar. Despite being his personal assistant, he doesn’t seem to notice me all that often. That’s probably a good thing, means I’m doing my job so well he doesn’t even know I’m doing it, but still. It’s a little unsettling to have him looking at me like this.

“Tell me about yourself,” he says. “You’ve been working for me for a while now, I guess I should know who you are.”

I grin at him. “I’ve been cleaning up your messes for six months now. You don’t really care who I am.”

He arches an eyebrow. “I don’t make messes.”

“Sure you do. You just don’t notice because I clean them up.”

He grins at that. “Where were you born?”

“Indiana,” I say. “My family moved to the Philly area when I turned ten.”

  “Do you miss the Midwest?”

  “Not really.”

“I was born in Indiana too, you know.”

“Really?” That surprises me. “I didn’t know that.”

“Little town called Mishawaka. Suburb next to South Bend. It’s basically a college town these days.”

He orders a whiskey and I ask for some champagne. We keep talking almost like it’s totally normal. I tell him about my childhood and he tells me about his. Weirdly enough, we had really similar upbringings.

At least until we got to college. That’s when he started the business that would make him rich beyond measure the first time around, and I decided to hang out and party and take five years to get a four-year degree.

“I remember seeing that on your resume,” he says. “Almost didn’t interview you.”

“Of course. You’re too elitist for us slow learners.”

He chuckles. “I don’t think it’s how fast you learn, but how hard you party.”

“Okay, good point.” I sip my champagne. He finishes his whiskey. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you drink before.”

He smirks. “There’s a lot you haven’t seen me do.”

I blush a little bit despite myself. I’m not sure what he means by that, but he’s ordering a second whiskey and a second glass of champagne.

We talk some more and I almost forget that I’m having a drink and a good conversation with the scariest man in my life. He orders some Polish food and we pick at it as we start on our third drink.

“I have to admit, this is good,” I say to him, feeling happy and at ease around him for the first time… ever.

“Yeah?” He sighs and pops a pierogi into his mouth. “I guess it is pretty good. You ever been to Poland before?”

I snort. “I’ve never left America before. I’ve never been to California, let alone Poland.”

“Really? It’s a shame, if I had known I would’ve gone all out.”

“All out how?” I ask. “I mean, this is a fancy hotel.”

“Only because I like fancy hotels.”

I grin at him. “Okay, touché.”

  “Also, you made the reservation.”

  “Another good point.”

“Warsaw’s a good city, but there are other places. Maybe I’ll show you them sometime.”

“Plan on selling equipment everywhere in the EU?”

“If they’ll have me, I’ll sell it.”

We toast to that and keep talking. I’m not watching the clock anymore but I do notice that the crowd in the lobby is thinning out. Soon enough, we’re some of the only people left in the whole room.

I don’t want this to end. I don’t know why but I’m having a great time. As it turns out, when Finn isn’t being a totally terrifying boss, he’s actually pretty funny.

And handsome. And muscular. Okay, gorgeous actually. But still, he’s funny and charming, what else does he need?

He sighs and finishes his third drink. “What time is it?” he asks.

  “I don’t know,” I admit. “I think it’s getting late.”

“Huh. Shit. We’re still on Philly time.”

  “Looks like it.”

“Are you tired?” he asks softly, leaning toward me.

There’s a look in his eye that I’m not sure about, but I shake my head anyway. “No, I’m not.”

“Good.” He stands up. “Come on.”

I hesitate before following. I’m tempted to leave some money on the bar but I know you’re not supposed to do that here. And all the food and drinks are on his room.

I follow him into the elevator. We ride to the top floor. My room is one floor down but I follow him out into the hall.

He doesn’t pause or look back as he walks up to the very last door in the short hall. He unlocks it and opens it up, and we step into an enormous suite.

The front room is modern and smooth with a couch in the middle facing what looks like a working fireplace. There’s a bar against one wall, another set of chairs and a coffee table, and finally a small kitchenette in the far corner. There’s another hall leading back to what I assume is a bedroom and a bathroom.

  “This is…” I trail off.

“You booked it, remember?” he walks over to the bar and opens a bottle of champagne. I bet that bottle just cost a few hundred dollars at least. He pours two glasses and offers me one.

Suddenly my nerves hit. I don’t know why I wasn’t nervous before this but it’s obvious what we’re doing. I mean, we’re both adults, right? We’ve been drinking a little, sure, but I’m not anywhere near drunk and I don’t think he is, either. He sips his glass and looks at me while I wonder what the hell I’m going to do.

“How much did this place cost?” I blurt out like a moron.

He laughs. “I don’t know. Like I said, you booked it.”

I frown. “Oh. Yeah. That’s right.”

He arches an eyebrow. “How much did it cost, by the way?”

“A lot,” I say, remembering the actual number in an almost distant way.

“Figured.” He sighs and sips his drink. He walks over and bends down in front of the fireplace. He does something to it, hits a button and turns a dial, and a fire is suddenly dancing right there.

He looks back at me. “Gas,” he explains.

I nod as if that matters. “Right.”

He sits down on a couch with a sigh and I hesitate. I could leave right now. If I don’t sit down, I don’t have to stay. It won’t be a big deal, I can just say I’m tired.

He looks back at me with a little smile and I don’t move, caught between two worlds. On the one side, I could leave here and forget all about this. Finn would go back to being the intense asshole boss I know and fear, and life would move on.

Or I can stay and find out exactly what he has to offer.

I feel my legs move forward, making the choice for me.

I sit down next to him. He cocks his head and eyes me for a long moment.

“I have to admit,” he says. “I expected you to run away by now.”

I nearly choke on my champagne. There’s no way he can read my mind, right?

  “Uh, right,” I say stupidly.

“You should know, I don’t do this,” he says. “I don’t bring employees back to my room normally. I mean, I never have before. But with you…” He trails off and shrugs, moving closer to me.

I stare into his gorgeous eyes. “With me, what?”

“With you, I was too tempted,” he says softly. “Is that wrong? I guess I don’t care if it is.”

I shake my head. “It’s not wrong.”

“Good.” His voice is velvet, almost a purr. He reaches out and runs his fingers through my hair, dropping to latch them in and pull ever so slightly.

I let out a soft gasp just before he kisses me. I should’ve expected it but he takes me off guard anyway.

He tastes like champagne and whiskey and something else, something grassy and earthy. It’s a good taste and I find myself melting into that kiss, wanting more of it. My blood’s pumping fast and my hands are shaking from the nerves but I can also feel that excited rush between my legs start to build.

He pulls back for a mom
ent and kisses my neck. “I’m glad you came,” he says. “I’ve been picturing what you’d taste like ever since I hired you.”

“Is that why you gave me the job?”

He chuckles. “No. I wouldn’t be nearly as successful if I only hired women I wanted to fuck.”

I bite my lip and let out a soft moan. He kisses me again and I know I’m dangerously close to making some kind of very stupid mistake.

I mean, isn’t it the first rule of… well, of life, not to fuck your boss? You never, ever, ever sleep with your boss. It only leads to really bad things.

  Right? That’s the rule?

He pulls at the buttons on my blouse and slowly gets them undone. I let him go slowly and every new button he pops free drives me absolutely wild. The tension’s building and I swear I might come just sitting here while he takes off my top.

  I guess I’m breaking a rule tonight.

He finally gets it off and pushes it back. His kiss gets more intense as he moves down my neck and shoulders, kissing my breasts. He unbooks my bra and I slide it off while he licks my nipples and teases me, pushing me back down onto the couch, pinning me there.

He kisses my stomach and drops to his knees in front of me, tugging at my dress slacks. He tugs them down over my hips and slides them off. I let out a little gasp, almost involuntary. He slides them off and I feel his mouth and tongue over my pussy, over my panties, licking at me, getting me even wetter than I already was.

And god, I’m already dripping with anticipation.

He finally pushes my panties aside and tongues me top to bottom, licking past my lips and teasing my clit. He rolling his tongue around it, tasting my pussy nice and slow at first. I let out a low moan and run my fingers through his thick hair as he looks up at me, a smile in his gorgeous blue eyes.

“Does that feel good?” he asks.

  “Yes,” I groan.
