  Two Years Later

All Hail the King of 5G!

I roll my eyes and throw the paper down on the table. Finn’s grinning at me from across the kitchen as he swoops baby Allie up into his arms.

  “Great, huh?” he asks.

  “It’s crazy.”

“I know. But it’s really good publicity.” He nuzzles Allie and she giggles before he puts her down. She teeters over to me, and I scoop her up into my lap. She picks up the paper I just discarded and starts to rumple it around.

“They’re not wrong though,” I say thoughtfully.

  “Only because Maxwell imploded.”

I grin at him. “And we didn’t even need to push that along.”

“You’d think we would’ve, but no. All it took was one disgruntled butler…”

“And the whole thing gets leaked.” I laugh and nuzzle Allie as she rumples and shakes the paper some more. “Pretty much ruined them.”

  “Hasn’t been the same.”

“Guess it was a good thing for us.”

“Good thing?” He laughs and comes over, kissing me and putting a mug of coffee down out of Allie’s reach. “It was the best thing imaginable.”

He’s right, although I hate to say that such a bad thing could be good for us. I mean, the headlines were insane and I’m pretty sure Maxwell was driven out of polite society entirely. Last I heard, he’s living on some little European island in the middle of the Mediterranean all alone.

After Maxwell’s company imploded about a year after we got engaged, everything took off at once. Finn’s company started winning every single contract they bid on. They doubled in size over the last year and they’re on pace to double again this year.

“It’s going to be a good year,” he says to me. “Director of Eastern Marketing.”

I groan and roll my eyes. “You know that’s crazy, right?”

“I know, but you deserve it.”

  “I don’t. That’s my point.”

“Come on.” He kisses me and heads back into the kitchen to get back to cooking.

We live in a townhouse in Old City, a quiet, sleepy little block. It’s everything I’ve always wanted.

And now I’m getting this big promotion at work. When we got engaged, he immediately moved me into the marketing department and slowly I’ve been moving up the ranks there. Now that we’re expanding again, he’s moving me up one more time.

People are going to talk about it, I’m sure. But he’s right about one thing. I am very good at my job.

He finishes breakfast and brings it over. Allie sits on the floor and plays with a puzzle while we get something to eat. We talk about what we’re doing for the day, and when we finish, he takes Allie up to get changed and ready for the day. The nanny’s on her way and when she’s here, we’ll head out.

I don’t know how this became my life. Our house is beautiful, our daughter is sweet and a surprisingly patient little baby girl, and my professional life is better than it ever has been. I have an absurdly expensive ring on my finger and a husband that cooks, cleans, and gets the baby ready for the day.

It’s incredible. It’s amazing. And the sex is still pretty damn unbelievable to top it all off.

All because of a mistake. It’s funny, how life happens sometimes. You make one mistake, one little stupid thing, and your entire path changes. All because of that night, that stupid night in Warsaw. We’ve visited twice again since then to help oversee 5G expansion into Poland, which is going great on top of everything else.

One mistake, the best mistake of my life. I’d make it again a thousand times more.

When Finn’s done, they come back downstairs. I kiss him, kiss Allie, and head out. “I love you,” I say to Finn at the door.

“Love you too, honey.” He waves at me and I walk down the stoop, out into the morning. He’ll follow once the nanny arrives, since he doesn’t have anyone at the company to impress and I need to work twice as hard to prove that I deserve every promotion I get.

As I walk, I keep thinking about my family and smiling. It’s silly, I know. But this is what I’ve always wanted and needed. I have my man, my incredible man, and my perfect little baby.

Now all I need is one more baby. Well, maybe two more. Or three. Who knows?

That’s the beauty. Anything seems possible and it all seems good. So long as I have my Finn by my side, I can’t stop smiling.
