In seconds, I held a snapshot of what I had been looking at on the monitor.
“This is our baby?” I asked, more to myself than to her. I knew that I had only precious moments before I really broke down.
“That is your baby. We’ll estimate the due date for June seventh. I’m going to prescribe you some prenatal vitamins and a healthy diet to follow. You’re underweight, and I’ll help you gain some healthy pounds. I have a list of books for you as well.”
I could only nod, staring at the photo in my hands.
“I need to ask you if you feel safe in your relationship, Roam, even if the dad isn’t in the picture anymore.”
I lifted my eyes to hers, considering her words.
Do I feel safe?
The man who spent centuries trying to murder me was trapped in the past, and the other man who had helped kill me time and time again was now obligated to help support my child.
And West…
“I’m safe,” I managed, trying for a deep breath.
She nodded. “Good. You’ve got an older sister who obviously thinks the world of you. She’s pacing in the waiting room.”
“Yes.” I stared at the floor, the full extent of my new life overcoming my thoughts.
“Okay then. We’ll see you in about a month. And honey? Read the books, but most of all… get some rest.”
The heavy door snapped shut.
I looked down at the thin film in my hand, my eyes focusing on the dark circle in the middle of the picture.
The world that had made no sense to me only moments before closed in, and I finally began to understand my reason.
My purpose.
Oh, West…
It’s our baby.
