The Lost World of James Smithson Page 48

by Heather Ewing

I would need another ten pages to thank all the people who have housed and fed and otherwise sustained me during the anni di vagabondaggio that comprised the search for Smithson. I am especially grateful to my family, and to all the Whittingtons, Elliot, Viva, Denise, Walter and Ray, Dino and Clare, the Kostovi, Jessica, Kate, Melanie, the Zukerbergs, the Davids, Jamie, Dan and Theresa, Julian and Cheryl, Juliet, Keith, Lucy and Mark, Rosetta and Gael, Esther, Laurie O., Niccolo and Piccarda, Joan, Polly, Sarah Meschutt and the much missed David, Michael Goldman, and Nicholas Scheetz.

Lastly, I owe many thanks to Bonnie Nadell and Mary Clemmey, who did so much to find this book the perfect home at Bloomsbury. Bill Swainson was my ideal editor, and I am grateful too to Emily Sweet for her outstanding editorial work, to Reginald Piggott for the beautiful maps and to Leslie Robinson for solving so well the challenge of depicting Smithson's family tree. Many thanks too to Colin Dickerman, Miles Doyle, Sarah Marcus, Sarah Morris, Richard Collins, Sarah Barlow, David Atkinson, and others at Bloomsbury who shepherded the manuscript through production.
