Dungeon of Darkness

Stephen didn't try to comfort her, but stood up with her in his arms and laid her on the bed very gently, then sat down beside her. He sat there quietly for a while, his face in his hands.

"I'll not apologize, Kathy," he said finally, his voice barely audible. "I feared throughout all of what happened that you were dead, and that I had lost you as surely as Duncan lost Margaret Drummond. I imagined you tortured and murdered, and that everything we would ever have together was lost to me."

"I know," she murmured. "Forgive me, my love." And she began to weep again, harder.

Stephen lay down beside her, and took her in his arms, but Kathy didn't stop crying, because she was unable to.

Finally, her sobbing subsided, mellowing first into sniffles, and then into hiccups.

With a deep sigh, she put her head on his chest. "I don't wish to give you false hope, darling," she murmured. "But I believe I may be growing up."

Stephen chuckled. "I would not wager on that, as yet, my love, but that day approaches very quickly. May I tell you something, without incurring your wrath, and a plate thrown at my head?"

"You may," she consented warily. "What is it?"

"What just happened here was in the way of being Duncan's last wish."

She sat up. "That is a disgusting lie, Stephen Lachlan!"

He grinned. "Not at all. Just two days before his death, we were sitting downstairs, by the fire, and when you came in, he asked me when I was going to...well, attend to this. And when I said I wasn't certain I should, after the hard time you'd had of it...."

Stephen smiled sadly as he remembered that day—the last good day he and Duncan McGregor had spent together before McGregor weakened and could no longer pretend.

"If ye don't, she'll make ye old before y'er time, lad. It's a fine woman Katie'll make, Stephen Lachlan, and she's near to it now. But do what ye know that you must— and if ye don't leave a few good welts, and make the brat howl like a banshee, ye're not the man I thought ye.' If ever a wench had a walloping due her, it's this one." And then he moved closer to the fire, chuckling to himself.

  The End.
