Back to the book’s genesis…
As it turned out, I’d been doing research for Fight Town since I started boxing at 13 or 14.
For a long time, boxing was my life. It trumped everything. I trained year-round, six or seven days a week, fought in the amateurs, almost went pro—my reason for hanging up the gloves is a decent story in and of itself, but it involves the pearl-clutching Ohioan, and I don’t want him stroking out over getting mentioned twice—and went on to train and corner fights for dozens of boxers and kickboxers.
So yeah, I figured I could write about boxing. All those experiences, all those crazy places, all those real-life characters and their distinctive voices, all those moments—the beautiful, the brutal, and the banal—they were all knocking around in my head and my heart, ready to come to life again.
But I still needed a framework for my story. I wanted the boxing to be grittily realistic with characters like the people I’d known fighting in Philly, but I also knew that a regular boxing story wouldn’t cut it. There just aren’t that many people waiting around for the next Rocky story. Not in book form, anyway.
Then I remembered this random scene I’d written about a guy getting shot for helping a stranger and waking up to Paul and Annabelle explaining Vicarus.
Wham!
Two previously unrelated ideas collided, and I was off to the races.
I had a blast putting this story together, channeling boxing experiences, and allowing Freddie and her relationship with Johnny to bloom slowly and fully.
I hope you had fun with this story, too.
Thank you for reading and rating my books, getting in touch, being cool, and especially writing reviews on Amazon, which more than anything else allows me not only to keep writing but also to keep writing what I want to write in an age where traditional publishing does not want strong, male protagonists who love women.
I look forward to continuing Johnny’s story. In Fight Town 2, he and Freddie will continue to push each other, grow stronger, learn more, and adapt their styles as they face tougher opponents in smokers and sanctioned bouts including the vaunted Fight Town City Championship.
I hope you’ll continue to read and enjoy these stories and that one day, preferably over a couple of cold beers and some bacon and brisket breakfast tacos, our paths will cross, and we will part as friends.
Take care.
Your pal,
Hondo
