Description
After losing his wife years ago to a drunk driver, the last thing in the world Sheldon Forth is looking for is love. With his precocious ten year old daughter getting older, he knows he has to fill the gap losing her mother created. He barely knows how to be a dad, let alone stand in place of both parents.
Enter Rachelle Watson. After working as a nanny for two years she never expects that her next job is going to change her life. Somehow she lands the position working for a billionaire she knows nothing about. Rachelle has a strict code of ethics which definitely includes not falling for her employer.
Rachelle is immediately won over by Sheldon’s sweet daughter Shanna but Sheldon himself is a mystery. His handsome good looks draw Rachelle in instantly and she finds herself battling her attraction for him. When Sheldon announces his intention to spend the summer at a remote cabin, it’s the perfect setting to kick that steamy attraction up a notch. Except both Rachelle and Sheldon want to keep their hearts guarded. Can they find love or will their fears about the future drive a wedge between them?
Chapter 1
“In the four years I’ve known you, you get all the best assignments.” Janie Richards leaned back against the table at the too small, overheated, overcrowded coffee shop and pulled a face. Her generous, lacquered pink lips turned up in a pout and she managed to bat too long, fake eyelashes just the right amount of times to feign hurt.
“It’s been two years since I started working at Top Class Nannies and we didn’t know each other before then,” Rachelle Watson responded with just enough dryness in her voice that Janie wouldn’t catch on.
“So two years then. I’ve been working here for over five years! It should be me getting the good assignments!”
Maybe you would if you didn’t sleep with all your clients. Rachelle bit back her uncharitable statement. “I’m sure your break is coming,” she said instead.
“I think it’s because you’re hotter than me. Blondes really do have all the fun.” Janie had a rocking body with curvy hips and large breasts and she wasn’t afraid to show it off. She made Rachelle feel like a wilted wild flower standing next to a beautiful rose.
“I doubt it seeing as the person who assigns us our jobs is an eighty year old woman. I don’t think she’s partial to hair color.”
Janie pulled a pouty face and took a sip of her seven dollar latte. Rachelle rolled her eyes but then quickly looked away. She wasn’t sure why she had agreed to meet Janie for coffee. She knew lots of other girls who worked at the nanny service and out of all of them Janie was probably her least favorite but when the other girl called and asked if Rachelle had got the job she knew Janie wanted, Rachelle couldn’t really turn her down.
“So what’s it going to be like working for Sheldon Forth?”
“Who? Oh. The job.” Rachelle blushed, ashamed that she had completely tuned out for a minute. She took a sip of her ice coffee and shuddered. How could something be too sweet and too bitter at the same time? “I’m not sure that it’s going to be different than any other job.”
“Why did you apply for it if you don’t know anything about it?” Janie looked aghast at Rachelle.
“I didn’t apply exactly.”
“You expressed interest though. We both know that’s the same thing.” Janie was looking really put out, her pink glossy lips pushed into an incredible pout. Geez, this so wasn’t going well.
“Sorry. I just looked at the job description. It said the client needed a nanny for the summer for a ten year old girl and I was free so I applied.”
“Did you even look at the pay?”
“No. Not exactly.” At the wicked look in Janie’s eyes Rachelle got the distinct feeling she should start answering the questions with less honesty. Around them the coffee shop hummed with people, the buzz of conversation cutting through Rachelle’s brain. She couldn’t believe how many people lined up to buy bad coffee with way too much sugar or drinks with overpriced milk. Although judging from the clientele and number of people working with laptops and phones set out in front of them, people here probably didn’t drink milk or take real sugar. Yup, this was definitely a soy, fake sweetener kind of place.
“Twenty grand! For two months! Whoever heard of such a huge sum? I did some research on the client. Pam in HR leaked his name to me. He’s a billionaire! And single!” Janie sighed and dramatically rolled her eyes in the I’m clearly dying over here fashion of a female about to faint.
Rachelle stifled a groan. “Well I treat all the jobs the same regardless of salary. I don’t even look at the pay until after it’s deposited into my account to make sure it matched the contract amount. I don’t want to know. The minimum pay is enough to get me by and I have enough saved from other, better paying jobs, that I can afford to take the ones that I want when they come up.”
“Must be nice.”
Must be nice to blow all your money on fake tits. Ok. That was bitchy. Rachelle sighed and forced a smile. Janie wasn’t really that bad and she was somehow a miracle worker with even the brattiest children. Her downfall was the fact that she couldn’t seem to leave most of her male clients well enough alone. Either that or they couldn’t keep their hands off of Janie. Either way, it amounted to the same thing.
“I had good references. You just need that one job that will put a good word in for you and I’m sure Mrs. Piper will give you good placements too.”
“You’re saying that
I shouldn’t fuck the husbands. That’s what you’re really saying.” Janie took a long pull of her coffee and set her empty paper cup down with an emphasized bang on the cheap table top.
“Well…” Rachelle decided to be honest. “It would probably help. Angry wives never make for good repeat clients and worse references.”
“They haven’t complained yet.”
“That’s because it’s humiliating. Who wants to confess that their husband is the ultimate cliché and is screwing the nanny? It would be best if you could just get a couple good references. That’s it. Just try to behave on your next couple jobs.”
“I try. Honest!” Janie raised her hand in the air like she swearing over some imaginary Bible in a court of law about to judge her. “It’s just that, well, guys are attracted to me. I try to fight them off at first but then they give me gifts and I try not to take them but they insist and it kind of snowballs from there. Maybe if those old witches didn’t want me to screw their husbands than they should put out more than once a year.”
“Janie!”
“Well it’s true! You can’t home wreck what’s already broken. Every single guy I’ve ever had sex with, well the married ones at least, were on the verge of divorce or incredibly unhappy. I’m just a way to escape.”
“Don’t be then.”
“I don’t like it. Honestly. Things just seem to happen and I can’t really stop it. Maybe the truth is I’m too lonely.”
“You could get a boyfriend.”
“With our schedule?”
“Yah, you’re right. That’s not going to happen. I don’t know. I just think a couple shining references would help. Or…” Rachelle grinned mischievously. “Get the guy to give the reference instead of the wife. Ask him when he’s in the throes of bliss and I’m sure he won’t turn you down.”
Janie actually laughed. Her shoulder shook and she covered her mouth with her hand. The laugh was so hard it was silent, just her body shaking, her face getting red, eyes tearing up. “Oh god Rachelle. I can see why you get all the good jobs. You’re funny. You’re nice. You’re charming. You have all the answers.”
“And I never dip my fingers into sticky pots.”
“Sticky pots! Ha!” Janie laughed so hard she snorted. “That’s what you call it?”
“I don’t have a term. That just came out.”
“Well, enjoy your summer. I have to go and put my applications in for a couple other jobs. Thanks for meeting me though. And be sure to tell me all about it at the end.”
Rachelle nodded, knowing full well she wouldn’t dare leak details of any of her jobs. Not the kind of info that Janie wanted at any rate.
Leaving the coffee shop and starting the long walk back to her tiny apartment, Rachelle’s mind went over what Janie had said. It made her wonder what all the fuss was about. Aside from the pay, and the fact that the guy was a billionaire apparently, she was sure this job would be no different than all the others.
Chapter 2
In all her previous nanny positions, Rachelle had hardly uttered a word to her family about her clients. Her mom and dad lived in Tampa along with her younger sister who was in her last year of high school. They all missed Rachelle and at times, living out in California alone, she often felt that she had made the wrong decision to move.
At the height of her loneliness, Rachelle had seen an ad for the nanny agency she currently worked for. The ad had planted a seed in her brain and she hadn’t looked back after initially getting hired. Being a live in nanny was great. She kept a tiny apartment outside San Diego just to have somewhere to live in between jobs. It was cheap and technically a place to call home. She didn’t want to just throw all her stuff in a storage unit although, with the jobs she’d been getting being so close together, the thought of giving up her apartment weighed heavily on Rachelle’s mind.
Sheldon Forth. She’d never heard of the guy before. How the hell did Janie get people to leak information like that to her? Rachelle never would have had the balls to ask for it. She was sure Janie knew more about her new employer than she did.
The temptation to call her mom and tell her who she was going to be working for and mention the fact that he might be obscenely rich was so great Rachelle almost reached for her cell. Almost. She wasn’t like Janie. She didn’t talk about her clients private lives or even their less than private ones. She told people that she enjoyed her job. That the children were great. That her employers were good people and kind. She didn’t ever go into specifics. She didn’t feel it was her place. Being allowed into the inner workings of a family was almost like a sacred thing for Rachelle. She would never betray that trust.
There had to be a first time for everything.
Grabbing her cell, Rachelle didn’t hit the call button. Instead she flipped open the internet and typed in Sheldon’s name.
What do you know? Hits galore. She purposely bypassed the photos and flipped right to the articles detailing how Sheldon made his wealth in international trade. She understood next to nothing about all that business, technical mumbo jumbo.
Hitting the back button, Rachelle brought up a photo. Sheldon Forth. Thirty-eight. She stared at the image that filled her screen. Dark eyes seemed to bore a hole through her though the photo was just that. A photo. Those eyes flashed with life, the glint unmistakable though the emotion behind it was harder to define. Dark hair that was perhaps a touch too long was combed back neatly from a hard brow that had the faintest frown line etched into the middle between dark brows. His nose was straight and aristocratic looking, his cheek bones surprisingly high for a man with such a square jaw. He was freshly shaved and wearing a tux, though the photo was just a head shot. What had he been attending when the photo was taken? There was no date though Rachelle could tell that it was likely fairly recent.
“Who are you Sheldon Forth?” Rachelle felt stupid for talking to herself. She clicked her phone off in annoyance, disturbed at the wave of emotion that tightened her stomach. Why should she feel anything for the man? She didn’t even know how to describe the tingle that raced up her spine when she recalled those black eyes.
To distract herself, Rachelle went back to packing her suitcases. She wished she knew more about the job. She knew the basics. Enough to want to take the position. She would take enough clothing for a few cold days and bank on the rest being warm. California summers were sometimes merciless in their unrelenting heat.
Finally she finished packing and sat down on the edge of her twin sized bed. Rachelle stared absently at the wall for a few minutes, fumbling with her hands, twisting and untwisting her fingers in her lap. A few moments later, unable to take it any longer, she reached for her cell and dialed her mother’s number.
Chapter 3
Sheldon Forth stared at the young woman standing awkwardly in the entrance of his house. She was slight of build with a willow grace that she assumed even when standing still. Her honey blonde tresses were swept up into a loose bun at the top of her head in such a way that Sheldon found himself wondering how long her hair truly was. She glanced around, liquid blue eyes as wide as saucers. She wasn’t afraid to stare and she took in her surroundings before her gaze flitted to his face and the start of a blush bloomed on her cheeks.
What kind of a woman was Rachelle Watson? Sheldon knew little about her except that the nanny agency he’d used for the past three years recommended her. She’d been deemed perfect for the job and he hoped she was a hell of a lot more competent than the last nanny. Even though his daughter was a sweet, gentle child, she hadn’t taken to the stern discipline the other woman tried to enforce.
Sheldon bit back the urge to ask Rachelle if she was impressed by all that she was staring so wide-eyed at but he bit that back and offered his hand.
“Good morning,” he said pleasantly, hoping that it wouldn’t take more than half an hour to get Rachelle settled and introduce her to his daughter, Shanna. He had work to do and a meeting in less than an hour so the soo
ner he saw the nanny to her room and instructed her briefly in her duties, which were basically limited to keeping Shanna fed and entertained for the few days they would be at the house until they left for Colorado, the better off he would be.
“Morning. I’m Rachelle Watson.” She gripped Sheldon’s hand more firmly than he would have thought possible for so small a woman. Not that she was tiny. No Rachelle was tall with just the hint of curves that lay below her professionally based exterior. He guessed that she dressed to hide her assets rather than flaunt them. While Sheldon should have appreciated her tact he found his gaze drawn inexplicably to the loose fitting dress and long sweater, wondering what lay beneath.
“I’m sorry that I don’t have a lot of time to speak with you this morning or get you settled. I can show you your room and I’ll introduce you to my daughter but after that I have to leave until the evening.” He managed to keep his eyes on Rachelle’s face, all the while cursing himself for his wondering thoughts.
Rachelle nodded and smiled warmly. Sheldon realized how beautiful a smile was on a woman like Rachelle. It was a rare, genuine expression in a world so full of fake ones. Everything about Rachelle seemed warm and real. She was average height with a slender build. Her hips curved gently into a small waist. The swell of her breasts were hidden by a loose fitting sweater. Her face was oval shaped with delicate features. Her blue eyes sparkled. Her nose was gently curved at the end and her cheek bones were not prominent but when she smiled, dimples were revealed. Wisps of blonde hair escaped her high bun and framed her face.
Sheldon blinked and quickly looked away when Rachelle gazed at him quizzically. Damn it. He didn’t stare at women, especially not his nanny. There was just something about Rachelle that commanded and held his attention. Something fresh and youthful and guileless that nearly took his breath away.
