I placed his arm over my shoulder. “You’re strong for such a thin young man and you have muscles on that beautiful frame.”
I glanced at him. Is he flirting with me? I questioned, as I smiled at his words.
We walked slowly and carefully in the direction of the stairs leading to his place.
“I was a dancer and now I’m retired,” I said.
“You’re awfully young to be retired.” Nicky stopped and winced, then we continued up the stairs and his conversation. “Came out to California from the north to relax, right?”
“How did you know that?” I asked.
“You don’t have a tan, and just a lucky guess.” We reached his terrace and I sat him in one of the luxurious white chairs with the thick cushions. “What are you doing now besides relaxing?” Nicky asked me.
“I’m looking for a job.”
“But surely you can’t need a job with that house.” Nicky glanced over, then continued, “It must cost a fortune. I watched as it was being built two years ago. It was a teardown and now this. You could get a lot for it. I know someone who would buy it if you’re selling.” I looked over and sat, because Nicky wanted to talk, and I needed to talk as well.
“To be truthful, I’m just housesitting.”
“For your parents?”
“I wish. No, I’m afraid not. The house belongs to a friend and I promised that I would stay until it was sold. If you know where I can find employment I would appreciate that.”
“What can you do?”
In my head I listed a number of jobs like being a waiter, but I knew less about working in a restaurant than applying makeup, so I said, “I’ve always wanted to become a makeup artist to the stars. It’s one of the useless talents that you need when you’re onstage dancing for a living.”
Watching Nicky’s face, I saw his eyes light up, and he turned to me. “I’m a director and I need someone in the makeup department ASAP.” I raised an eyebrow. “You don’t need prior experience. I just need a body and I’ll have someone assist you.”
This couldn’t be happening. Just what I needed—a way to get into this business and maybe meet the man of my dreams. Nicky was quite handsome, but he didn’t appear to be what I’d been looking for, or groomed for. I’d been a submissive since very young and I didn’t think I could be anything but that. I needed someone to take care of me and Nicky appeared to need that as well, and I didn’t know if he was even gay.
“Before you say any more, Nicky... I’m gay.” I thought I would get that out of the way. I didn’t want to be told that I couldn’t get the job because of my gay status, or someone didn’t want me working on them because of my sexual persuasion.
“Well, isn’t everyone?” he said with a chuckle, and a pat on my hand. “Most people I meet in my business are gay, and the ones who say they’re straight are lying to the public and themselves. Trust me, I know. I’m a director and I have my own independent company. And not to shock you, but I’m gay as well. I thought you would get the hint when I said that I was a confirmed bachelor. You would either stay or run and you didn’t run, so now I can add you to my list of new gay friends.”
Nicky reached for my hand and held it. I waited for lightning to strike, or electrical currents to travel through me and shock me, but no such luck. “Would you like to stay awhile and have a drink with me? Some wine maybe? I don’t usually drink during a shoot, but we’re wrapping up now and I’ve had a fucking hard day with my Prima-donna leading man. Another gay man pretending to be straight. That’s another story. Now go, so I can drink this pain away, and bring that bottle of tequila with you.”
“Sure. Where is it?”
Nicky pointed to the inside of the house. “The wines are in the small fridge in the kitchen. You’ll see it. The tequila in the cabinet over the fridge. I would get up, but I’m trying to heal before I have to go to work in a few days and get this fucking picture wrapped. I’ll probably have to give the crew a few days off, because of my ankle.” He grimaced.
“It looks like you’re hurting more than you’re letting on. Do you need me to take you to the hospital?”
“Of course not. I hate to have to see a doctor. They always fuss over you and give you pills for everything. I can’t drink when I take those damn pills. If I need attention, I have a friend down the way I can call.”
“I’ll find the liquor. Do you need me to do anything else?” I watched Nicky’s mouth part with a wide hidden smile. I thought I knew what he was thinking with that flirty smile, but he wasn’t my type.
“Don’t worry about tracking sand inside. I have someone to clean every day.” Holding my hand as I rose from the chair, he said, “You’re a submissive aren’t you?”
“How do you know that?” This man was very observant. Too observant.
“We can recognize our own.” He aimed a sexy smile my way. “Maybe you can be my Daddy? You seemed to take charge of the situation.” Wow, I didn’t expect that. Me, take charge of what? I’d never taken charge of anything in my life.
I stopped and turned to Nicky. “I don’t think so. I don’t know what to do. I’ve always been a submissive and someone’s boy.”
“You could have fooled me. You’re still young. You have time to change,” he said, and winked at me with a smile curling up to one side. When you’re ready, I can teach you. My Daddy left me for a younger man. Someone like you. I’m somewhat lost without him to take charge and take care of me and this house when I’m away on a shoot.”
“And now you want me to be your Daddy and take care of you? I’m only twenty-one and I...”
Nicky interrupted me, “Only for a while until I find a Daddy willing to take on this.” He made a sweeping hand gesture over his body. I can be demanding and I never take orders. You will probably have to spank me when I’m bad.” His eyes lifted, he drew back his bottom lip behind his gleaming upper white teeth, and inhaled, then exhaled.
It appears Nicky and I are looking for the same thing, I thought, turning away from him and opening the glass door to walk inside his house.
I didn’t know how lonely and depressed I’d been while living in New York, but somehow, meeting Nicky made me smile and feel better. Another thing I didn’t realize was that I’d been insecure. Looking back, Robert had groomed me to be his boy, and I thought without him I couldn’t make it.
Maybe that was why Jami had called every minute and I had to reassure him I was okay, that I hadn’t jumped from the Hollywood sign, and it wasn’t necessary to leave his babies and Max in New York to come see me in L.A.
I wondered if people still did that—jump from the Hollywood sign.
Chapter Six
Chase
My first job on a movie set as a makeup artist and I was going to be late. I’d wanted this since I discovered that my love obsession had become an actor. “What the fuck?” I shouted, sitting up and glancing over at the digital clock near that enormous bed. “Three a.m.”
It was at least an hour’s drive or more to get to the studio from Malibu. I slapped my head, “What the fuck am I thinking?” My feet hit the floor and I raced to the shower. I was still on Eastern Standard Time and my body clock hadn’t adjusted yet, because of my schedule of staying up late playing video games.
Could it be I had something to do with that? Yeah, I had to admit I depended on Robert to tell me when to go to bed and he’d write out a schedule for me. He had controlled every part of my life until now. Now I was on my own and it looked like I was going to fuck that up.
Now I had no discipline or structure, because I’d been spending my nights playing video games with a guy I’d met on the beach while running after I didn’t see Nicky anymore, but Nicky gave me the date and time to get to the studio.
Kenley Hayes lived down the beach with his mom and stepfather in a large impressive home, and even when I’d said that I had to get up to go to work so he couldn’t come over, he came anyway.
Kenley didn’t ask me any questions about my life. He ne
eded a friend as much as I did, and when I said I wanted to chill and play video games, he was all in and brought over the eats.
We sat playing and eating all times of the night, with all kinds of insane treats like pizza, and Nachos and cheese. Since he was my age, still living with his parents, and I had no one, my place, or should I say Jami’s house, had been an awesome place to hang out in. What the fuck did I have to lose, except a job that I wasn’t prepared to lose?
Turning off the water in the shower, I made another mad dash and pulled a tee over my head, shrugged my arms through, and pulled up a pair of jeans with holes in the knees. I knew these Hollywood types didn’t much care how you dressed, so I took as many liberties as I could.
I felt I’d finally found my freedom and now I was going to let loose and do what I wanted. However, I still craved that discipline of being a dancer and Robert’s palm on my ass when I didn’t meet his standards. I couldn’t think about him now. I needed to forget him.
“That life is over and it’s not coming again,” I told myself, rushing into the garage after filling a cup with stale coffee and grabbing a cold dry bagel, instead of a carrot stick and an energy bar.
I’m on my own and I have to figure out how to hold down a job, and so far I haven’t figured that one out yet, I thought, climbing into the car, turning on the motor. Music from Satin Jackets, You make me feel good, filled the car.
I’d found the keys to an antique Mercedes in the garage when I’d first arrived at this glorious home, and for some reason it cranked right up. When Jami called to check on me he’d said that Max had given his permission for me to drive it as long as I had some kind of driver’s license. I’d kept my Washington state license and whenever I danced in San Francisco, I’d fly in and renew it. It appeared that I didn’t have long before I’d have to renew again.
My mother sent me the renewal forms religiously, but since she’d married again, I had been reluctant to see her, but I knew I had to. I thought she should have looked into Robert’s background before she handed me off to him. Now since I’d grown up, I knew why she did it.
Pulling out of the garage, I headed out along the Pacific coast highway. Even though I hadn’t driven for some time, it was like riding a bike. You never forgot.
Robert had allowed me to drive his rental cars throughout Europe, and a scooter in Italy, because I’d been driving since I turned a teenager. He’d been too tired and seemed disinterested in going out lately, maybe because of that boy who he’d so-called mentored, that he wasn’t interested in going to our favorite places we’d visited when we were in love.
Or, I had been in love with him.
Now that I looked back, I realized that he had never loved me.
That notion made me sad, but now relieved that I hadn’t wasted more time with him, and woken one day at forty years old to discover I had nothing except the clothes on my back. I pulled up at the Outer World Studio security gate, and when I saw a sign, I realized that my thoughts had brought me here, and I’d been happy, however, I didn’t think about how being late for this job could end it for me.
Finally, I made it on to the lot after showing my ID and presenting security the card with Nicky’s signature which stated that I had been hired by Nicholas Hazel the director. Security further verified that I would be part of the crew. Nicky had been true to his word.
Driving through the security gate, I thought things were looking up, that was until someone stepped out in front of the car. I hit my brakes and screeched to a halt, which caused the man standing there to jump back and fall to the right of the steps of a large trailer.
Shifting the gear to park, I jumped out and helped the man up, then brushed the dirt from his face.
“Are you hurt?” He stared at me and didn’t say a word. I felt that feeling I’d had before when I fell in love with Robert—a ball tingling feeling, the uncontrollable urge to fall to my knees suck his cock, and strip to let him spank my ass, or fuck my hole, whichever one came first.
I wanted him to kiss me and hold me, to do whatever he needed to do, and I would thankfully let him have his way with me, and be his boy.
The desire I had now for this man wasn’t the same as when I first met Robert. I could sense it, because I was a teen then, but now I was an adult—not quite a matured one, but an adult nonetheless. Looking into this man’s eyes, I wanted to be whatever he needed me to be. From the dim lights surrounding the trailer, he had to be someone important, and fuck me if I didn’t want him.
I’d completely forgotten my obsession with Peter Rowan.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” He barked. “Can’t you see? Can’t you drive, you fucking idiot? And who the fuck drives around with their lights off.” His voice was strong as he cursed at me. Although his words were harsh, his face showed something different. There was a softness to his blue eyes.
“I’m late, sir.”
“I’m not your Daddy.” He blinked his eyes as if he’d given himself away, or couldn’t believe his Freudian slip.
“Well, if you were, I’d wait for my spanking.” I winked and smiled at him, but he just narrowed his eyes and tramped off in the direction of a large metal building.
I knew he must be someone important and I didn’t want to start my day by running over the cameraman, or an actor who could get me fired. Jumping back into the Benz, I headed in the direction where I had spotted cars. There was parking, thank God, and I hurriedly parked the car in the nearest space.
I sprinted out of the car, not taking time to catch my breath. I had no idea that my life would change overnight. When I entered the enormous building, Nicky who’d hired me, walked in my direction past the cameras and the green screen and said, “Peter, meet your new makeup artist.”
The man I’d been fantasizing about had stepped into my orbit, but then there were plenty of Peters in the world, and what were the probabilities of me almost running over my man and him being a dick?
That’s when the smiling handsome face turned to meet my eyes, and I saw nothing but disgust in his expression. Then, Peter turned to Nicky. “What the fuck are you trying to do to me, Nicky? Where’d you find this... this kid?” Peter spoke as if I wasn’t there hearing everything he said. “He can’t be who you’ve gotten to do my makeup. For fuck’s sake, it’s the final scene and you know how important that is. He knows nothing about my character. I bet he hasn’t seen one of my movies. What, are you fucking him?”
“I’ve seen all your movies, and no, he isn’t fucking me,” I shouted. Peter and Nicky turned around at the same time and glared at me. I too was shocked at what came from my mouth. Maybe I’d been tired of being dicked around all my life... or maybe I was fucking tired having to get up this early, and disappointed in Peter.
“Since you aren’t fucking him, Nicky, then get rid him. Call one of the artists I fired and agree to pay them more. I’m going back to my trailer until you have someone that can get me through this final scene, so I can get the fuck off this set and sleep in my own bed tonight.”
Without another word from Nicky, Peter strode off, and we watched as if it was an out-of-body experience. For me it had been the chance of a lifetime to be near the man I wanted and felt a connection to, but I realized that he was nothing but an ass.
No sooner had the air cleared, than Peter came charging back through the doors. “He parked in my fucking spot. No one parks in my fucking spot. Get him off the lot now.” And he slammed the door after stepping outside.
Nicky placed his hand on my shoulder. “I’m sorry. Here’s my card, maybe it will help you out somewhere else.” As he signed it, he said, “Keep in touch. I may have something for you in my next picture if you haven’t gotten a job by then.”
Taking the card, I lowered my head and strode off in the direction of the door as the crew stopped what they were doing to watch the drama, and me leave.
Nicky caught up with me before I reached the door and I felt a soft touch on my shoulder. I turned around. “If we e
ver get this movie completed, I’m having a party at my place. You know where it is. Just look out for a bunch of drunken actors and crew and come on up. I want to see you again.”
Smiling, I thought this wasn’t so bad. Maybe I’d found a friend. I liked the flirty way Nicky looked at me. His green eyes soft when his tongue swiped over his lower lip and he bit down on it.
“When I finish this picture maybe we can get together?” Nicky said, his eyes appraising me the way Robert used to. He moved closer, and in the dim lit corridor, he swiped his tongue over my bottom lip, and my mouth parted for it, then he pulled it away and we locked eyes.
“Yeah, sure. I want that,” I said, crossing my arms and shooting him a closed smile. My heart hammered in my chest. I wanted that, because I was looking for a Daddy, but Nicky wasn’t the one. A fuckbuddy, but not a Daddy.
