He wanted to ask her who she was, but he didn’t want to reveal himself. He had no idea who she was or what she was capable of. She walked over to him, her naked body covered in glistening rain. She stretched a hand out in front of her, letting Zayn sniff her palm. This mysterious female intrigued him. She had long black hair and almond eyes. Across her nose were dozens of freckles, each a darker shade than the last.
“Go back to where you came from,” she said to him. “There are more important things that you need to tend to.” She leaned her head back and howled, low and sad, at the sky.
Zayn stared at her for a few seconds longer before running out of the woods. She had touched his snout; he was certain it wasn’t just a vision. He knew now what he had to do.
Jesse was in the kitchen making a cup of tea when he heard a knock on the door. He was startled, thinking it must be an emergency. What if it was Zayn? What if he’d been out hunting and had gotten injured? Jesse wiped his hands on a dishtowel and went to the door. To his surprise, he could see Louis standing outside. He opened the door and smiled at his friend. In the background, the storm raged on.
“Louis! What are you doing here?”
Louis ignored his greeting. He shoved past him into the living room, tracking mud on the hardwood floor.
“Louis? Are you okay?”
“No I’m not okay,” Louis said. “What are you doing, Jesse?”
“Well, I was making a cup of tea—”
“That’s not what I meant!” Louis growled. He was bristling, his eyes turning from brown to gold. He hadn’t changed yet, but he may as well have. He was just as powerful in his human form as he was in his wolf form, especially when his eyes were the color of embers. He watched Louis run his hands through his hair. He was agitated, but Jesse couldn’t figure out why. Then it dawned on him. Was he agitated because of what had happened with Zayn? Jesse gasped slightly. Had he seen them out there, in the rain?
As if he could read his mind, Louis snapped at him, “I saw you earlier! Out there in the rain, like you couldn’t have cared less about anyone else’s feelings. Don’t you understand what this is doing to me? You’re literally killing me, Jesse! The worst part is you don’t even care!”
He took a step towards Jesse who instantly took a step back. He almost knocked over a glass vase, then steadied it.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know—” Jesse tried, raising his hands in defense.
“What do you mean, you didn’t know? Of course you did! You saw how I reacted earlier. Anyone with eyes could have guessed that I still cared for Zayn. It’s all your fault, for being so selfish.”
“Louis, listen, I understand you’re upset, but there’s no reason to take it out on me.”
Louis laughed, which startled Jesse. He was in such a wild state, Jesse had no idea what he was going to do next. What if he attacked him? He didn’t want to hurt his friend, but he would have to, in order to defend his life. He wanted to defend Zayn, but was anxious to admit he’d developed feelings for him so quickly. He had no one to talk about it with; he was all alone in the situation, and it terrified him. The only other person he could talk to would be Zayn, but that was practically out of the question. Confess to the person you’re intimate with that you’ve developed feelings? It was practically laying your body out on the railroad tracks. Jesse knew he couldn’t do it. He didn’t want to go it alone, but it was looking more and more like he was going to lose his friend.
Louis was pacing back and forth, holding one of his hands. It had started to grow fur over it, but he willed the change back. He didn’t want to succumb to the stress that was taking over his body. If he changed into a wolf, there was no telling what he would do to Jesse. He might have killed him; he was just in that kind of mood.
“Louis, I really think we can talk about this. I think you should try sitting down. How does that sound? I can make you some tea,” Jesse offered weakly.
“I don’t want your charity,” Louis responded. Jesse wasn’t sure how to respond to that, so he remained silent.
“I was in love with him,” Louis said quietly. “It just hurts, you know? I don’t know how to handle it. Every time I try to bring him up, everyone just silences me. They tell me that what happened between Zayn and I wasn’t even real. Can you believe that? Who even says things like that? And I know they’re just trying to make me feel better, but honestly, it just makes me feel worse. I’ve been going out to the desert by myself for the past few weeks, trying to forget about everything that’s happened.
“That’s when I saw him. He was hunting around the same time that I was. I saw him enter into one of the clusters, and I literally stopped in my tracks and threw up. It was horrible. That was the week I didn’t’ see you guys; I was too busy holed up in my room, drinking. I’m telling you Jesse, it’s been a dark couple of months.”
Jesse wasn’t sure what to say. His friend was being so raw and honest with him, it was unnerving. He wanted to console him, but he wasn’t sure how. He wanted Zayn just as much as Louis did. Then he started thinking. Was it really worth it? Would Zayn leave him like he did Louis? Jesse had to think this wasn’t true, but he wasn’t so sure. What if Zayn was only in it for the short run? What if he was planning on giving up right after they had sex?
He was trying not to let the negativity in, but it was impossible. Which is why the next fifteen minutes shook him to his very core. Zayn burst through the door, covered in rain and red sand. He was breathing hard, his shirt torn in some places. He walked straight up to Jesse and took his face in his hands.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
Jesse swallowed hard and nodded. “Good,” Zayn said. He turned his attention on Louis, who was staring at them with wide eyes.
Zayn looked from Jesse to Louis, assessing the damage. Not a word was spoken. The silence was so thick it could have been cut with a knife. Finally, Louis spoke.
“I’m leaving,” was all he said before he disappeared out the front door. Jesse wanted to call after him to stay, but he wasn’t sure what he would even say to him. Would he apologize for what had happened? Was it even worth apologizing for? Jesse felt sad, but headstrong. He wanted to be with Zayn and unfortunately for Louis, there was nothing that could be done about it.
Zayn seemed to feel the same way. He turned his attention back on Jesse, and began talking quietly to him.
“It was the craziest thing—there was this fox shifter in the cluster. I didn’t even know there could be fox shifters! Anyways, I was going to eat her, because I was so hungry after we’d been with each other. I know I should have been satiated, but you opened this mouth inside my very core, and it won’t stop asking for you.”
Zayn stopped talking and ran his hands through his hair. Jesse walked over to him and placed his arms at his sides. Zayn kissed him on the mouth, bit his jaw, and let his teeth run ragged over Jesse’s throat. He turned him around and pushed him against the wall. Jesse was moaning, begging Zayn to give himself to him. He had been looking for someone to protect him, someone to take charge when danger struck, and Zayn was it. He was his dark, lucky clover.
Zayn ripped Jesse’s shirt off his back, letting the shreds of fabric fall to the floor. He kissed Jesse’s back, loving the way the bumps of his spine tasted. He was skin, and salt, and rainwater. Zayn ripped Jesse’s pants off and began massaging his buttocks.
“Change,” he growled. “I want you to change for me.
Jesse looked back at Zayn, whose eyes were glowing brightly in the storm light. He did as he was told, loving the feeling of one skin swapping out for another. He did it so quickly he cut parts of his body, which dripped blood onto the floor. He didn’t care. It wasn’t enough damage to kill him, and he was doing this for Zayn.
Zayn changed behind him, making sure his fur inched slowly down his back. It was orgasmic the way it felt. His wolf jaws burst forth from his human face, drool and blood cascading onto the floor. They mixed with the sand and mud, creating a strange concoction that would be
impossible to scrub out of Jesse’s floor.
Zayn used his jaws to bite Jesse’s back, holding him in place before he mounted him. He let his claws dig into Jesse’s back, making sure he was steady. Jesse was howling softly beneath him, his groin pulsating from pleasure. He let his claws run up and down Jesse’s fur, loved the way he smelled like earth. He barely recognized the creature beneath him. His shoulders jutted out at absurd angles, making Zayn drool. He wanted to bite them off, use his marrow as floss, and turn Jesse’s bones into his new teeth. There was his hunger, again.
Zayn’s penis was growing larger, and he needed to insert it before it was too big. He began to push against Jessie, letting himself in and out as slowly as possible. Jesse’s own boner stood straight in front of him, pre-cum puddling on the hardwood floor.
Zayn’s penis grew larger, and Jesse could make out the veins on his cock. It was like he could feel every part of Zayn through his penis, from his hunger to his pulse. His blood was beating against the walls of his veins, begging to burst forth and drown Jesse in the sweet, dark red.
Zayn pumped for a few minutes longer before he knotted inside Jesse. Jesse could feel the swell of his head, and the way he became a plug. He struggled against the pressure of Zayn, wanting to be released. The pressure was almost too much to bear. Zayn continued to bite and lick Jesse, tickling his nose and his neck. His fur stood on end and he felt like he was being electrocuted each time Zayn touched him. He was using his snout to latch onto Jesse’s neck, making sure he was planted firmly against the ground before inserting his seed inside him.
Jesse’s eyes were flirting wildly around the room. His thoughts went from Louis to Zayn and back. He even thought about the fox woman for a few minutes, wondering what that was all about. He could barely handle what was transpiring inside of him. He knew Zayn was clenching his penis, trying desperately not to finish yet. It must have felt incredible for Zayn. Jesse felt ticklish; he was nervous and couldn’t move his body properly. He was Zayn’s furry love puppet. He wasn’t sure he minded.
Chapter 5
When Zayn came, he drew blood from Jesse’s neck. Not a lot, but enough to create two thin rivers. He’s like a vampire, Jesse thought to himself. If that were true, he would be even more enamored with Zayn. As if his current state of affairs wasn’t enough, he practically blurted out that he loved him. He had cum inside Jesse, owning him as his omega. Jesse would carry his seed and give birth to a race of pups that were half Jesse, half Zayn. He imagined them growing up to be strong and fearless, running in droves across the purple mountains. Maybe they would be like the legendary wolves of the mountains, a loner-pack that chose to stay away from all human life.
Zayn transformed back into a human as he lay naked on the floor. He placed his hands up to his forehead, massaging his temples. He’d had a headache beforehand, but having sex had made it all but disappear.
“Now what?” Jesse asked playfully.
Zayn rolled over on his stomach and bit Jesse in the arm. “Now you’re mine. You belong to me and no one else. I’ve inserted my seed inside you. There’s nothing more you can do. When you finally give birth, I’ll be there to help you deliver.” He kissed the top of Zayn’s head before biting him hard on the collarbone. “Don’t forget—you belong to me and no one else.
Jesse responded in kind. How could I ever forget? He asked inside his head. The veins of fate tied them together. There was no going back.
Zayn got up and started to put his clothes back on. He needed a drink. Heading towards the kitchen, he sensed another presence. He looked around the room, sure he had seen somebody standing around. But when he looked closer, he found nothing. There was a fat centipede running up the side of the wall. Zayn knew it was his own overactive imagination. He had Jesse now, and that made him nervous. He wanted to keep him right where he was, safe. Louis was proving to be more of a threat than he’d originally anticipated.
Outside, it had begun to rain again. This was the second time in two days. Jesse was convinced it was because of magic. The desert hadn’t seen that much rain in months. What if his water-world daydream was coming true?
“Zayn?” he called out.
“Yeah?” Zayn responded. He downed the rest of his water glass and came back into the living room. “What’s up?”
“Well, it’s been raining quite a lot. Do you think the desert is going to flood?”
Zayn’s face was serious for a few seconds before he burst out laughing. He was doubled over, the water glass dangling precariously from his fingertips. “That’s the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard,” he said.
“I think it’s a perfectly valid concern,” Jesse muttered. “I mean, what if?”
“Yeah, what if, Jesse? What if we have to build an ark, and heard all the shifters two-by-two onto the deck? I don’t think Louis would like that.” He erupted in laughter again. “We’d have to pair him with somebody.”
“Oh, Louis wouldn’t like that. He said he’s still not over you,” Jesse said. He regretted it the instant it came out of his mouth.
“He said that?” Zayn said.
“I mean, earlier. He was really angry. Before you came over, I thought he was going to attack me or something. Is it a big deal?” he asked. Thinking about Louis and Zayn getting back together made him nervous. He began to sweat, wringing his hands.
“No, it’s alright. I don’t have feelings for him anymore. I just didn’t know he was still talking about it to people. Louis usually likes to keep his life private, you know what I mean?” He sighed. “When we were together—if he was upset—I wouldn’t know for hours at a time. I would have to force it out of him. It was actually pretty annoying.”
Jesse bit back his jealousy. It was just a conversation about the past— not a big deal. He could listen to Zayn talking about his ex-boyfriend. That wasn’t a threat, was it?
“Did you guys ever, you know…” he let his voice trail off.
“What? No, of course not. I was saving it for someone special, and then you came along. I’m so happy you came up to me that night. I might never have had the chance to meet someone else in this town. I was actually thinking about leaving that night.”
He smiled sheepishly at Jesse, whose neck turned a bright red. “You were?” he asked.
“Things didn’t seem to be working out here. I saw you at the bar a few times, but I figured Louis would get to you before I did. He’s prone to doing that—filling people’s heads with lies.”
“He’s still my friend, you know,” Jesse responded.
“I know,” Zayn said. “I’m just saying, you shouldn’t listen to everything he says. I’m sure he’s made me out to be some sort of a monster.”
“Well what did you expect, Z? You really broke his heart. And who’s to say you won’t do the same with me?”
“What? Why would I do that to you? Jesse, you have to know I care about you deeply and I would never do that to you.”
“Say it, then. Tell me how you feel about me. I need proof that we’re in this together and that you’re not just going to leave me high and dry.”
“I, um. I can’t do that,” he said quietly.
“Then I think you should leave.”
“Jesse—”
“Just telling me that I’m yours doesn’t do much to assuage my fears. I think you need to leave. I need some time to think about this.”
“You know what? Fine. I don’t know why I even bothered,” Zayn said. He stormed out of the house, disappearing into the rainstorm.
Jesse sat down on the couch. It was his turn to rub his temples. He couldn’t believe what had just transpired between the two of them. It was such a whirlwind of events; he didn’t know how to handle it. And now he was pregnant with Zayn’s seed. It was going to be a bumpy ride if he didn’t have him around to help. But Zayn had left. He’d essentially proved Jesse right; he wasn’t ready to commit to a long-term relationship. He was only in it for his weird, selfish needs. He probably just wanted Jesse because he
was someone who would carry his children. That angered Jesse beyond reason, but there was nothing he could do about it now.
When he told his friends the next day what had happened, they all consoled him. Louis wasn’t present; he had run off to the mountains after drinking too much and they hadn’t seen or heard from him since. The friends he did have vowed to help Jesse through the pregnancy. The signs had started showing mere hours after Zayn had stormed out of the house.
Jesse decided it was best to stay away from the bar for a while. But he wouldn’t be able to hunt on his own. The best he could do was eat meat from the hamburger joint down the road. He spent all week with Niall. While Jesse slept, Niall got drunk on the couch and watched eighties films. When he sobered up, he would go to the dark clusters to hunt. He told Jesse he’d run into a fox-woman several times, telling him about how beautiful she was.
“Niall,” Jesse said. “Are you bisexual?”
“I might be!” Niall had said excitedly. Jesse wasn’t really sure how to take this news. He was sick to his stomach, and responded by throwing up into a metallic pot. Niall laughed at him. Not even two weeks later, and Jesse was showing quite fully. He was going to give birth to an entire litter, and it broke his heart to think Zayn had abandoned him for good.
Word got around to the town that Jesse was pregnant. His neighbors that he barely interacted with had begun sending him gifts. He received teething rings and marrowbones, a mixture of human and wolf gifts. He wanted to ask Niall and the others for word of Zayn, or at least, Louis, but he felt too nervous to admit he cared.
On the evening Jesse was about to give birth, Louis appeared as if by magic. Everyone was gathered around Jesse, who was laying on the floor of the living room. He was in the fetal position, doubled over from the pain. Louis had knocked on the door and entered with the fox woman. She introduced herself as Fay and explained that she would help Jesse deliver. She greeted Niall like they were old friends, kissing his cheek and hugging him. Jesse cried out and was angered that Zayne wasn’t there.
